Years is a compact, straight to the heart (and feet) record. Every song connects and no notes are wasted. It's a new country classic, plain and simple.

Shook’s unerring insurgence and commitment to the cause are admirable traits, proof that edge and attitude never go out of style.

The Disarmers are the perfect bunch of honky tonk rockers to help Shook bring these tunes across. 2015's Sidelong showed Sarah Shook & the Disarmers had plenty of potential, and Years shows there are plenty more great songs where those came from.

    A charming and disarming album.

Her music boasts the building blocks of potential crossover success: impeccable compositional construction; a distinctive songwriting voice; superb musicianship. For now, Shook is content to wallow in country's grimy underbelly, embracing the genre's traditional tropes while pushing them to unexpected places.

In contrast to the North Carolina songwriter’s rushed but rousing 2015 debut album, “Sidelong” (reissued last year by Chicago-based Bloodshot), Years is a more measured but no less bracing listen. Shook’s backing band, the Disarmers, holds a steady flame without letting things get out of hand.

As an exercise in exploring the various strains of left-of-center country and roots music, Years is spot on.

Shook might not possess the vocal range of kindred spirits Lydia Loveless or Nikki Lane, but she clearly a force to be counted. [May 2018, p.26]
