Guarded and beautifully measured, At Weddings has an absorbingly intimate quality.

It’s an album utterly relatable because love, and heartbreak, are universal. It’s also something so amazingly personal that no one could precisely duplicate it, because every experience is specific to Tomberlin’s journey. That’s At Weddings: passion, devastation, depression , and strength rolled into one. It’s tenacious, and it’s beautiful.

At Weddings is filled with such a powerful, saintly aura that even the most ugly subject matters can spur flawless, beautiful results.

At Weddings doesn't allow itself to wallow. If anything, it's Tomberlin sharing with us her own form of catharsis, a collection of intimate and powerful songs that sift through life's more disappointing and challenging moments to find the beauty we sometimes overlook.

At Weddings quickly coalesces into an utterly compelling presence. [Sep 2018, p.88]

These are fine-boned tracks, filled with lops, piano, surges of sound and Tomberlin's hazy voice. But they are carried on the shoulders of great melody, so the effect is of gloriously distorted pop--warm, somnolent, slightly out of focus. [Sep 2018, p.118]

Whatever its emotional well-spring, her expression is clear, purposeful and strong in its directness. [Sep 2018, p.38]

Her tranquilizing balance of wandering purity and unconvincing bravery is intimately grasped and yet confronted with anxiety and disbelief that decorates her daydream-like prose in conflicting ways.

    Truly, a remarkable debut.

There are traces of White Chalk-era PJ Harvey, Low and Sufjan Stevens here and there, but At Weddings introduces a new and singular talent.

At Weddings shows Tomberlin tapping into a tentative inner strength, creating a soothing record that ends up resisting its self-doubts and reaches out its hand.

At Weddings remains remarkable for its grace, candor, and composure. For now, with or without religion, Tomberlin seems equipped to keep her demons at bay.

While simple and often musically somnolent, its heart-wrenching effect is ultimately hard to shake.

Tomberlin's use of one phrase to build the songs from is particularly powerful because of how it musically mirrors the process of introspection and the location of one memory or instance to probe for revealing insights. She chronicles her loss of faith with a bittersweet melancholy that finds self-awareness to be its own form of enlightenment. Like the ethereal light of the early morning, she rises.

I have a difficult time picturing any fan with diverse taste in quality music not appreciating what a beautiful debut this is. My taste spans from Dillinger to Massive Attack to Fiona and Vince Staples. I agree with the PJ Harvey comparison one 'professional' critic mentioned. I hate to compare her to anyone; but when the first artist that comes to mind is Grouper.....That's not bad. Great. Three listens later; and I don't want my Klonopin. But it's time for some Converge.
