  • Summary: Jim O'Rourke produced the singer-songwriter's fourth LP.

  1. At 14 tracks long, Orton could have trimmed three or four cuts and left a near-flawless, efficient package that was all killer and no filler. As it stands, it is merely excellent.

Unerringly lovely, but best when the drums heat up. [Feb 2006, p.87]
  3. It's a much warmer album than her most recent album, 2002's Daybreaker, and it's perhaps her most complete album yet.
  4. It's intimate, home, and it's never felt more comfortable.
  5. It's Emiliana Torrini, Cat Power and Nick Drake all rolled into one, and it's soothing enough to curl up and die for.
  6. The record was recorded in two weeks, and many songs sound as if they are first takes, with cracks and stumbles preserved.
  7. As an album, Comfort of Strangers comes across as a missed opportunity. For the most part the album sounds fantastic, and you really want the songs to hit the spot more than they do.

This album is so beautiful, organic, lush, and heartfelt. I have found Orton to be "boring" in the past, and I cannot overstate how striking, pretty and engaging this album is. Highly recommended. Expand

Her finest work yet. Very intimate and dirrect. This simpler acoustic sound suits her better.

From Orton, I like the electro-folk pop sound of Daybreaker the most. On Comfort Of Strangers, her voice, which I'm already not crazy about, sounds unclear. On the positive side, some songs do sound fresh. Expand

Solid, long-time fan here. Without question the worst Orton album she's ever released. Maybe three decent cuts -- with the rest rambling, bambling, shrilling, sinking. Can someone explain to me the positive reviews listed above? Am I in some alternate reality where people have ears on the bottom of their feet? What a disappointment. Expand
