Childers walks the line of down-home idiosyncrasies and smooth popular jams with a star-making perfection.

With nine short songs, Tyler Childers has deepened and expanded the world he etched in Purgatory.

Recorded in only two days, the unit plays tight yet carefree bringing an airiness to the songs. This is a true feel-good country record that should generate repeated play. Childers is the real deal; the joy and grit in these songs are pure hill country.

Childers is blessed with a timeless voice and an ear for the plurality of mountain music, these songs roaming between bluegrass, folk, straight-up country and R&B. [Sep 2019, p.26]

On Country Squire, his best release yet, he grapples with masculinity, family and the South in ways that feel entirely new, despite sounding really traditional. I’ll listen to his rocking chair tales any time.

Stuart Duncan’s fiddle reinforces the small-town details of “Matthew,” about simply trying to make ends meet while enjoying a little bit of joy in between the trials. That’s a theme common to country and folk music, yet on Country Squire Childers invests it with enough insight and immediacy to make those hardships sound perfectly present tense.

This is solid country gold through and through with a song or two with shades of bluegrass and blue-eyed soul. Tyler's voice (both literally and his POV) take us on a tour of the life of road dogs from Eastern Kentucky and it's a trip I can tell I will want to take over and over. Standouts are Country Squire, Creeker, Gemini, and Peace of Mind. Expand
