Do Hollywood offers a lesson in embracing both the origins and originality of modern rock & roll.

It’s fun, it’s weird, and like nothing you’ve ever really heard before.

With one foot in the present and one foot in the past, The Lemon Twigs have produced one of the most striking, individual, and colorful debuts of the year.

Do Hollywood is a stylistically complex album. This fusion creates instrumentation that allows lyrics that would normally sound too simplistic to sound just right.

It’s utterly bonkers, but there’s so much raw talent there, once they’ve learnt to rein in their excesses The Lemon Twigs could go on to produce something truly special in the future.

At their best, they are capable of creating songs that take off like jet planes at dusk ("Hi+Lo"), strut wobbly like Paul Williams on a bender ("I Wanna Prove to You"), and hit the perfect spot between heartbreakingly sweet and just plain odd.

In an age where any era of music is within a second’s grasp, The Lemon Twigs’ reliance on nostalgia is at best dated; at worst, pure laziness.

To be appreciated by fans of Beach Boys, Beatles, Bowie and those in that lineage with just a little pinch of funk for good measure. These kids reproduce a sound we've now listened to for 50 years, but without making us feel they're "piggybacking" off their predecessors sound. Their clean grooves and song-smithing deserve respect in their own right. Expand

But until there's something more palpable than bygone era worship, they will just feel like another indie throwback group. Expand
