Entering Heaven Alive, along with Fear Of The Dawn, stands as a shining reminder of what White can accomplish when you hand him a guitar. ... Entering Heaven Alive now reminds us of his range, his playfulness, and his deep understanding of the music that inspires him.

Even within a semi-unplugged framework, White contains multitudes, packing in plenty of styles under one faintly folksy umbrella. One thing that immediately stands out is White’s wholly underrated knack for making great piano-based roots-rock recordings. ... The rub is gentler, but there’s no less reason to feel tickled.

Entering Heaven Alive feels of a piece with White's previous work, yet the ideas are synthesized and executed in fresh, inventive ways, suggesting that the ungainly Boarding House Reach was indeed a transitionary album to allow him to do music that's as relaxed and vibrant as this.

It makes for a decent companion record to Fear Of The Dawn but also works perfectly well as a standalone album in its own right. Two decades on, Jack White’s creative fire shows no sign of dimming.

While Entering Heaven Alive lacks the thematic and musical consistency of Fear of the Dawn, it is no less striking with the depth of its musical diversity.

This is a creative period, one suspects, that both fans and White alike will look back on as one of his most complete and satisfying yet.

Entering Heaven Alive may not be his most ground-breaking album and won’t entirely satisfy those who come for the great White guitar wail. But this master musician really sounds like he’s enjoying himself with results that are pretty heavenly.

Entering Heaven Alive is a joy to sink into and overall one of the most easily accessible and best of Jack White’s solo career.

It adds up to White’s most relatable – and accessible – record in some time.

Perhaps the most mellow and settled LP of White's career. ... These slow burns seem good for White. [Aug 2022, p.84]

Although his dabblings in bluegrass pastiche are less convincing elsewhere, it’s all shot through with characteristic, likeable idiosyncrasy. [Oct 2022, p.36]

Unlike its predecessor, it comes across as a decidedly calming affair, one that stands apart from the earlier album’s brash and bombastic surge of racket and rumble.

Entering Heaven Alive is flush with surprisingly nimble and fluid melodies that remind you of what a song craftsman he can be when he’s not overcooking his music. And some of those tracks—”If I Die Tomorrow” and “A Tree on Fire From Within”—are among the most arresting and least self-conscious songs he’s made in years.

The songs of Entering Heaven Alive probably won't become the genre touchstones that White's heavier tunes are, but they're a fresh glimpse into a songwriter who, long considered a retro traditionalist, now continues to get more unpredictable with each album cycle.

The songs themselves don’t stand up to his best acoustic work. It’s not a bad album by any means, but it’s also rarely exceptional, and therefore, not very memorable.

Heaven suffers because its settings imply a compositional weight that the songs just don’t carry; Fear has a clearer sense of itself as a collection of shiny amusements.

A fun album, but one in need of trimming and extra heft. [Aug 2022, p.69]

It’s at this blurry intersection of inscrutability and openness, of pure persona and slavish authenticity, that White has often done his best work. Much of Entering Heaven Alive exists too far to one side of that spectrum.

Entering Heaven Alive is seldom actively bad, but the most interesting component of either of White’s 2022 albums is that, well, there are two of them.

What a year for Mr White, releasing not just one but two excellent records. While "Fear of the Dawn" was a wall to wall rocker, "EnteringWhat a year for Mr White, releasing not just one but two excellent records. While "Fear of the Dawn" was a wall to wall rocker, "Entering Heaven Alive" is its acoustic companion. Despite its acoustic nature, it still has bite resting more on the rhythm and blues rather than the folk side of the fence. This some of White's most well thought out songwriting to date and for me, it is a treat to get a full album in this style rather than a couple of token acoustic tracks. "A Tip From You to Me", "Love is Selfish", "If I Die Tomorrow", "Taking Me Back (Gently)" are amongst the highlights. Full Review »
