The overwhelming success of this unexpected Mac mashup is clear evidence that it's more than a one-off idea. [No. 144, p.52]

Clocking in at just under 40 minutes, the album finds a pair of consistently evocative artists in full control of their powers.

They’ve reunited in the studio for this succinct collection of gentle pop-rockers, familiar yet far more strange and beautiful than 2013’s brittle Fleetwood Mac EP.

It's another memorable chapter in rock's longest-running soap opera, with both Lindsey and Christine thriving on the dysfunctional vibes.

This off-piste project has turned into a far more substantial, fully realised undertaking. [Jul 2017, p.24]

McVie brings the sing-song pop; Buckingham, the whispered vocals and fingernail-splitting guitar solos. [Jun 2017, p.86]

Sleeping Around The Corner is a finely calibrated update of their FM-rock blueprint, while Too Far Gone nods cheekily to Tango In The Night's Big Love. [Aug 2017, p.100]

Lyrically, Buckingham-McVie isn’t nearly as caustic or wistful as the band’s ’70s material, but the songcraft is still there all these years later.

Together, they’ve produced an album of cracking Mac-esque pop, most notably the clipped, catchy Feel About You and the tightly constructed first single In My World.

There is nothing of great surprise here, which while reassuring to fans does also lead to the criticism that McVie and Buckingham are just that bit too predictable through the course of an album. There is however no lack of emotional input to songs like Feel About You.

This dichotomy between the album’s two bandleaders makes the album an authentically interesting listen instead of a throwaway reunion effort.

While Lindsey Buckingham/Christine McVie isn't perfect--and it was smart not to bill this effort as a Fleetwood Mac record--it's far better than expected, and indeed, they should have made it happen long ago.

Free from the weight of living up to the Grammy-winning behemoth’s history, this 40-minute collaboration shimmers and contains the cheeriest laments about unrequited love you’ll ever hear.

After the strong, finger-picked Buckingham solo feature of “In My World,” however, the rush of hearing these two pop-rock titans team up starts to wear off. ... Granted, successful moments are sprinkled throughout the whole album.

A curious album to be sure, Lindsey Buckingham/Christine McVie could just as well have been released as two separate EPs.

The album falls somewhere between curio and convincing; there’s enough here to hold the attention of the casual Mac fan, however fleetingly, but diehards should find a bit more to dig into in the brighter moments. A worthwhile exercise.

They’re best when they work together, with the charming simplicity of the island-flavoured “Feel About You” and beach-strolling “Red Sun” contrasting nicely with the tart, twitchy urgency of “Too Far Gone”.

While McVie's voice seems to have held up quite well, it's all but lost behind multiple layers of effects, combined with gratuitous use of shakers and other percussion. As for the songs themselves, most are simply fair-to-middling pop songs.

At its best this album is innocuous. Don’t focus on the lyrics and it is palatable and will be Fleetwood enough to please some. At its worst it is the musical equivalent of trying to squeeze yourself into your favourite clothes of yesteryear: uncomfortable, unflattering and not worth the struggle.

This sounds like togetherness put on, not poured out.

The contrast between McVie and Buckingham has never been more apparent - she of the sunny bop, he of the tortured, overacted melodrama. I'm not sure which is more maddening: songs that make you wish the singer would go ahead and pull the trigger already, or ditties that Snoopy the dog would find too chirpy? This would have made an OK McVie EP, but as always Buckingham has to steer the ship or he's getting off. Let him get off, already. They even messed up the album cover - photoshopped on a white background, it's as lightweight as the material. Better songs might have inspired a copy of the old Buckingham Nicks cover with Christine in Stevie's place. Full Review »

Overall I think the result is not a top-notch one but it helps relieve a little bit the hunger to hear the beloved voice of Christine again. For me none of the songs really stand out, but a few tend to flop like the single 'Sleeping Around the Corner' and 'Too Far Gone'. My personal favorites from this record are 'Red Sun', 'In My World' and the last track 'Carnival Begin'. I totally recommend to give it a try, you won't be disappointed. Full Review »
