With this album, Kanye West proves the strong strength of a talented person, and the bold attempt of mixing and matching samples of multiple genres but so fitting makes this album still establish a wonderful work in the history of hip-hop music.

Can't say I believe the hype. I can't help but note that reviews don't focus on the quality of the music so much as the fascinating aspects of West's character. The attempts at 'experimentation' on Twisted Fantasy amount to little more than derivative stupidity - see Runaway's incomprehensible cello-vocoder final few minutes and those multiple climaxes on Power that just don't make any structural sense. It doesn't matter how many guests he pulls in to help him out, these cuts rarely rise above self-indulgent mediocre. And sampling Aphex Twin? On a song with such a horribly annoying hook? Pure sacrilege. I will say that the album is listenable and at moments entertaining, but really, it isn't what everyone claims. Expand

This album is definitely one of the highlights of the past year as far as mainstream rap releases go, but it is by no means the masterpiece that critics are making it out to be. Kanye does gives us greater insight into his fragile, yet slightly twisted psyche in a much more earnest way than on previous records, and there is certainly some of his trademark wordplay at work here, but there is still nothing so unabashedly personal that makes certain classic records so great. The music, arrangement, and songwriting, although catchy and fitting to most of the lyrics, is let down by a production that is saturated by current mainstream pop cliches, and that is the biggest letdown on this record. I really was expecting something more revolutionary, something that you have not yet hear on any rap, or pop recordings in recent years, but for the most part, this record sticks to the familiars. The strength of this record lies in its hooks and amusing wordplay. Standout tracks include the seismic Monster, with its barrage of guest stars and its ambition. Hell of a Life and POWER are on par with anything else in the mainstream today, but the rest. . . well it isn't bad, but it definitely is nowhere near classic status. Expand

Each track feels and resonates of Kanye’s soul, pulling you deeper into the imperfections of himself and the beauty of his inner conscious. Runaway is probably one of the best songs I’ve ever listened to, delicately, and gorgeously put together- oozing of sorrow, melancholy and elegance. Kanye West’s lyricism in this album is also no joke, songs like Devil in a New Dress and Gorgeous exemplify his technical abilities and his sheer charisma and clever punchlines we’ve adored since The College Dropout. Until Kanye West returns to his roots and puts out an album close to the lyrical skill and production of The College Dropout, I will continue to be disappointed. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy from Kanye West, released in 2010, in spite of a few quibbles, I can say is an exceptional achievement. I haven’t listened to enough of the artist’s other albums to say definitively if this is his best to date, but it’s hard to see how it couldn’t be. In fact it’s among the best hip-hop albums of this decade, up there with The Roots’ Undun and not far behind Kendrick Lamar’s masterpiece To Pimp a Butterfly. Kanye has tendencies that can bug me a little, his ambition can get the better of him and a few songs probably drag on a little too long. But the overall inventiveness, fun, and equal parts profane and poetic lyrical quality, far outshines whatever flaws there are. There are thirteen tracks, one being an interlude and another, the final track, being a short beat that doesn’t really have Kanye at all. On the 11 remaining songs Kanye West shows that he is, whatever one thinks of him personally, an unquestionable talent: a rapper with strong voice and strong instincts for collaborations. His works here with known quantities like Jaz-Z and Nicki Minaj and lesser known artists are extremely well crafted, none better in my opinion than the bumping track “Monster” which has both mentioned artists, and “So Appalled” and “Gorgeous” are also a standouts; no song feels overly cluttered by too many artists, though a few are a bit uneven. The ones where Kanye is the sole singer or dominates the song are equally impressive; at top of those tracks has to be “Power”, and I also love “Dark Fantasy”. There’s no bad song, and the journey takes you actually has some profoundness in its own brash, profane, sexual way. Expand

It exists in the personal opinions of millions of musicgoers, whether its little girls who enjoy Miley Cyrus, or teens who listen to Lil' Wayne because they speak to him, or the estranged hipster listening to his favorite indie rock record on vinyl. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy by the decade's most talented new rapper and producer, Kanye West, is the very definition of perfect. It is a hip-hop masterpiece, bridging the gap between old school hip-hop and modern mainstream and indie sensibilities. Fusing fashions, tastes, and thinking minds of various statures, BDTF is a record that deals with the very esscence of a flawed human being firing back on the world around him, it is a departure from the bad guy, and a start to a new villain, it asks the question, Why do I exist, and what good is there to be found in me? It keeps the train a rollin' and stops it all the while.
Please excuse my long rant, but MBDTF is quite possibly one of the best hip-hop records I've ever heard. It's one that both critics and simple listeners will adore, and it is an artists struggle to regain his ego from his peers and people. It does so many different things and does them on so many different grand levels. First of all, the beats and synths and all around instrumental work on BDTF is perfect. The production for the album is staggering, some of the best found on any record, ever. The song, "All of the Lights"is a perfect example of this with ten people singing at once, an orchestra striking trumpets and trombones in the background, timpanies and beats flaring about, all while Kanye West raps about the big city and his daughter's life. We find him contemplating his love life and his mistakes on "Runaway" all while firing back on the people who blew out on him on the Taylor Swift epidemic. Dark Fantasy asks the question "Can we get much higher?" and most definetely answers it. The quest spots are nailed excellently, ranging from Raekwon to Cudi, Beyonce to Pusha T, even indie kid Bon Iver! Even the auto-tuned parts, which I usually detest are found incredible on this piece of history. Top that off with Kanye West's old styles with new ways of getting them across with "Power" ranting about being kicked off his throne with King Crimson being sampled in the background. "Monster" sees him and friends ranting about hurting and killing and all dark fantasies are about. On Dark Fantasy we see West as the **** he's always been trying to shun away from, but finally accepts in full glory, we see a flawed man trying to improve all while a flawed past won't allow him. We see a man maturing even with darkness in the light, overall Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is a deeply intricate hip-hop record and the best album of 2010. Simply and utterly perfect, it is the view of the modern world and the old one coinciding in the life of one man, his story, the stories around him, and the world he lives in, and is so brilliant.

Fireworks flash while red hoods march through a field. At the center of the spectacle is a huge, pale, cartoonish rendering of Michael Jackson's head. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy's gargantuan "All of the Lights" soundtracks the procession, with Kanye pleading, "Something wrong, I hold my head/ MJ gone, our **** dead." The tribute marks another chapter in West's ongoing obsession with the King of Pop.
West's discography contains innumerable references and allusions to Jackson. His first hit as a producer, Jay-Z's "Izzo (H.O.V.A.)", sampled the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back". For many, his first memorable lines as a rapper came during 2003's "Slow Jamz": "She got a light-skinned friend look like Michael Jackson/ Got a dark-skinned friend look like Michael Jackson." And when West's recent interview with Matt Lauer on the "Today" show went awry, he took to Twitter, writing, "I wish Michael Jackson had twitter!!!!!! Maybe Mike could have explained how the media tried to set him up!!! It's all a **** set up!!!!" Like most everything else, Kanye may exaggerate the kinship, but it's real. And it's never more apparent than on Twisted Fantasy, a blast of surreal pop excess that few artists are capable of creating, or even willing to attempt.

To be clear, Kanye West is not Michael Jackson. As he told MTV last month, "I do have a goal in this lifetime to be the greatest artist of all time, [but] that's very difficult being that I can't dance or sing." He ended the thought with a laugh, but you get the impression he's not kidding. Unlike Michael, he's not interested in scrubbing away bits of himself-- his blackness, his candidness-- to appease the masses. And while Jackson's own twisted fantasies of paranoia and betrayal eventually consumed him whole, West is still aware of his illusions, though that mindfulness becomes increasingly unmoored with each newspaper-splashing controversy. The balance is tenuous, but right now it's working to his advantage. On Twisted Fantasy, Kanye is crazy enough to truly believe he's the greatest out there. And, about a decade into his career, the hardworking perfectionist has gained the talent on the mic and in the control room to make a startlingly strong case for just that.

Kanye's last album, 2008's 808s and Heartbreak, was heavy on the Auto-Tune and stark synths, but relatively light on grandiose ideas. It was a necessary detour that expanded his emotional palette; a bloodletting after a harsh breakup and the passing of his mother that manifests itself in Twisted Fantasy's harshest lows. But musically, the new album largely continues where 2007's Graduation left off in its maximalist hip-hop bent, with flashes of The College Dropout's comfort-food sampling and Late Registration's baroque instrumentation weaved in seamlessly. As a result, the record comes off like a culmination and an instant greatest hits, the ultimate realization of his strongest talents and divisive public persona. And since the nerd-superstar rap archetype he popularized has now become commonplace, he leaves it in the dust, taking his style and drama to previously uncharted locales, far away from typical civilization.

He's got a lot on his mind, too. After exiling himself for months following last year's infamous Taylor Swift stage bomb, the rapper made some of his first comeback appearances at the headquarters of Facebook and Twitter in late July. Videos of West standing on a table in tailored GQ duds while gesticulating through new rhymes (sans musical accompaniment) quickly made the rounds. The Silicon Valley visits seemed like a stunt, but they were prophetic. Forever an over-sharer, Kanye was looking for an outlet for his latest mirror-born musings. He found that platform with Twitter, and proceeded to dictate his own narrative in 140 character hits. Whether showing off exotic purchases, defending himself against the press, or going on stream-of-consciousness rants, Kanye finally had the middleman-free, instant-gratification platform he'd always wanted.

Juiced on the direct connection, he began releasing weekly songs for free online, the generosity of which would be moot if the songs didn't deliver. But they did, over and over, eventually building up the same type of superstar goodwill Radiohead pulled off with their pay-what-you-want In Rainbows release plan and Lil Wayne's free mixtape barrage leading up to 2008's Tha Carter III. So while Kanye can't sing or dance like Michael, he's making meaningful connections in a fresh, oftentimes (ahem) naked way. "When I used to finish an album I would be so excited for my mom to hear the final - final!" he wrote on November 11. "The final - final is what we used to call the... completed album with all the skits!!! I made songs to please one person... MY MOM!!! I would think... would my my Mom like this song!" - Pitchfork

This album is almost incredible. Rick Ross's verse on Devil In A New Dress is the hardest guest verse ever recorded in hip-hop. Nicki Minaj's verse on Monster is 2nd. POWER is one of my favourite hip-hop songs of all time. But for some reason, songs such as Gorgeous and So Appalled don't connect with my soul as much as they seem to for other people. And obviously Blame Game. I was practically masturbating at most of the production however (Dark Fantasy, All Of The Lights, Runaway). Kanye really doesn't miss with the production. As much as I hate to admit it, this album is overrated and has a few weak spots but the highs on this album are higher than Trippie Redd on a daily basis. I am never going to decide whether this or Yeezus is better. Expand

This album is not only Kanye’s magnum opus, but an ode to how majestic music can be. Surging beyond the lyrical and technical genius behind nearly all of the rap performances, the depth of composition and production quality elevates the album to be a 21st century version of a Beethoven symphony. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. 7.5 for me. Love this record and it´s starts so strong, Dark Fantasy being the best Kanye intro to any album, Gorgeous guitar riff and Kid Cudi´s hooks, POWER being just a classic and Runaway being one of Kanye´s best songs. But most of the second half I don't find it that much appealing to me. I don't like So Appalled and I hate Hell Of A Life. The outro with Bon Iver with Lost In The World and Who Will Survive In America are not that bad in my opinion, actually i enjoyed those songs matching together at the very end. I like this album and it was a pivital point in Kanye´s carrer, for what happened with Taylor Swift and him exiling to Hawaii. I don´t think it's MAGNUM OPUS, like some ppl call it but I can respect that opinion. Expand

West is far from rap's deftest lyricist but his neurotic grandstanding is compelling and often pretty funny to boot. [Feb 2011, p.84]
