There is no songs here that would be lover the level of this project. Songs like Runaway, Power, amd Devil in a new dress are songs I would consider as a one of the greatest I ever heard. 10/10 is a perfect score for this album.

this album is arguably the best album of all-time. no doubt that it is his best yet. its written well as a lyricist and a songwriter and maniacally produced. its the most weird and beautiful music I've ever heard. I wish the album had more songs to amaze us. and one more thing...Christian Dior Denim Flow should have made the album!...

Hey "Better Music," if you say you give this album a 1/10, why did you give it a 0/10? Also, if you like Eminem so much, wouldn't you know that he just released a crappy album this year? (which, by the way got a 63 on MC, as opposed to Kanye's 93.) And as far as Dre goes, his partner Big Boi released an amazing disc this year, so shouldn't you be a little satisfied? Also, if you like Eminem so much, wouldn't you know that he just released a crappy album this year? (which, by the way got a 63 on MC, as opposed to Kanye's 93.) And as far as Dre goes, his partner Big Boi released an amazing disc this year, so shouldn't you be a little satisfied? "You can try and read these lyrics off this paper before I lay them, but you can't take the sting out these words before I say them." You think those are good lyrics? Those are lyrics about lyrics: they're empty. Kanye's lyrics are about heartbreak, loss of a lover, loss of a mother, an evolved perspective about his image in the public eye and the responsibility he has as a result. Not only are his lyrics more mature than ever before, his music is genre-expanding, having evolved far beyond the typical constraints of hip-hop and pop music in general. This album flows from spoken-word poetry, to improvisational instrumentals, to ballads, to hardcore ciphers, not to mention that ALL of the production is immaculate, not by some amateur (which is a laughable criticism.) I honestly don't understand how you could say that. The sound is complex, crisp, quiet, then loud, then quiet again, not compressed, and perfectly balanced. There are no cheezy synths; auto-tune is used artfully (Runaway, Lost in the World); samples aren't just jacked, but truly made a part of the music (especially with bon iver). And to say that he copped Moby's style is just wrong. He didn't. This doesn't sound like Play at all. But even if he was influenced by it, that's not a bad thing, for all music has some influence. And for those who criticize the language just don't get art. Good art is often evocative (like his cover) and as long as it's done tastefully (which this is), profanity and the like is an essential part of the music and the art (take Cee-Lo's **** You" - who even cares about the radio edit "Forget You"?)

What impresses me most is how he does so many things with just 1 song. They flip and turn and mutate into some other form of the same track from an alternate genre. The sequencing is perfect, making the songs flow seamlessly into one another. In fact, the songs build on each other and pick up from the previous song's momentum. The album is simple and complex all at once, revealing more and more with each listen - Kanye's chef-d'oevre.

Let us get that out of the way first. This is admittedly a somewhat reactionary review directed at those who claim that the album is revolutionary because Kanye admits he is at fault and loathes himself. Well, that's quite a misleading summation by many reviewers who wanted to find a concrete reason to give it a perfect score, and really not suited at all to this album, only one element of the song Runaway. The rest of the album is a dark, unapologetically twisted fantasy, as far removed from the tone of Eminem's more therapeutic Recovery as possible because, while Eminem tried to work through everything that was going down in his life, Kanye does nothing to attempt to mitigate his gargantuan ego. Instead, he celebrates it and directs his uniquely self-centered but honest personality at various aspects of what is, well, his fantasy. God only knows how you can shrink-wrap Kanye's mind into one You can try to toss various intelligent phrases into the blogosphere to sum up the album if you really feel like it, but you won't find one because it's quite sprawling in every way. It is a discussion of the excesses of being a celebrity, sure. It's also Kanye just doing what he does best, bragging. It's also Kanye making such outlandish claims and statements that nothing he says could be taken as anything but fantasy. So really, it can be summed up as Kanye spitting out his creative music visions of what goes on in his head, and, knowing him, it's probably an honest vision.

You've heard enough about the music, but it is important to address anyway. The beats get repetitive because of the song lengths, but this isn't too much of a problem because different twists are thrown in to make it interesting. The quality of the music is unbelievable, as full orchestras are wrangled together to make a boisterous, complex, and flamboyant sound that really does transcend genres of music.

Love him or hate him, his music is more carefully crafted and thought-provoking than most. I think he's a fascinatingly distasteful man, as are most images projected by this album. But whatever other distastefulness goes on in his life, this album harnesses the distastefulness into great music, and oddly 50 years after Bob Dylan came on the scene introspective music is still underappreciated and under-represented on the pop scene. Well, Kanye's oblique method of introspection consists of projecting every image of debauchery, excess, and egoism running through his mind's picture reel. And at the risk of inflating his ego too much, I do believe he has 21st century pop stardom pretty well pegged. God knows we've heard enough linguistically creative but utterly negative, nihilistic, "realistic" rap and hip hop to want something more creative, different, and INTERESTING. Well, hip hop fans, here it is. Pop fans, you might want to check it out too if you don't mind cussing.

Kanye's one of, if not, the most influential rap artist of the 21st century. He took a genre which was desperately in need of a re-vamp, and successfully pulled it off with the release of four albums before "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy".

MBDTF is dark, unforgiving, grand, and uses imagery which only Kanye West could pull off. It's a culmination of all of his frustrations in the 21st Century. Themes include celebrity, consumerism, the culture surrounding hip-hop, fidelity, and West's career.

The album features appearances from Raekwon, Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj, and John Legend, each of the tracks they feature on are highlights for me.

Easily Kanye's most grandiose work, Twisted Fantasy is a self-indulgent, introspective, haunting journey into the mind of a recluse, exploring the rollercoaster that is fame and power. The work stands proudly as one of the greatest albums of the decade, if not of the 21st Century.

Given Kanye's public perception at the time of release, it is easy to understand why the album was so talked about. It embodies the best and worst of Kanye West - the genius, endlessly creative and brutally mischaracterised Kanye, as well as the misogynistic, ego-driven, power-hungry monster of Kanye. Heartfelt lyrics are poured out over some of the greatest beats ever recorded, produced largely by Kanye himself (as well as Mike Dean); the lyricism, while mostly top-notch, is frequently overshadowed by immensely layered and spectacular production.

The album is constantly honest and always disarming, culminating into the masterpiece that is Runaway. Although the remainder of the album is in general weaker (with the exception of Lost in the World, a brilliant finale which ties the album together excellently), it hardly detracts from the overall quality of this project. Twisted Fantasy remains one of the most interesting musical self portraits ever conceptualised by one of the most misunderstood musicians on the planet.

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is a brilliancy of rap music; an honest look at a deeply flawed individual and the corrupting nature of the spotlight. This is an album that will change your perception of its creator and leave you with a newfound appreciation for his talent.

After this raucous and ego-driven track we then in a bipolar manner switch to an instrumental thats melodically pleasing using pianos and I believe a cello.

The next track is just a hype track using the same instrumental of the previous track in the beginning. The entire album is just more urban jungle music and seems pretty boring to me.

If there was ever a definition of a "modern day classic" this would be it. If you don't own this album then you must buy it now. Kanye West bares his soul in an album so bold it will never get old. I come from a guitar based background but this album is extraordinary.

This is an album that deserves the acclaim it is getting through the press. It has some pretty awesome transitions between tracks and some pretty cutting edge stuff for a "mainstream" rap album. I actually think a lot of "mainstream" fans are going to resist this album, and for that, and the risk-taking that Kanye is taking, I give this CD a 10.

This album's got great producing and the guests in this album are top notch. Power is the bomb!! So are the rest of the album but to me, the best song here is gotta be Lost In the World. The way he fuses the beats, the raps and the Auto-Tune (not to mention the number of guest artist) in this song is phenomenal. If I were to relate this album with a movie, it would be Inception. This album is also one of the most hilarious he's ever done. In some tracks, particularly Runaway, Kanye West starts dissing himself, toasting to "douche bags, **** scumbags, and jerk-offs". Even in the Bonus track, See Me Now, he mocks his VMA's interrupting of Taylor Swift, even featuring Beyonce.
All in all, this is probably the best album of the year.

In addition, the production on the album is about as elegant as it gets. We, as a society, view Kanye as this outspoken, obnoxious guy and the redeeming feature of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is the fact that we get an inside look into the psyche of West and ultimately, sympathize with him. Furthermore, the beats and lyrics, two main things I always look for in a hip hop album, are there 100 percent and make most all other rappers stuff look meek. Overall, the way Kanye is able to put his heart and soul into this one while not letting that hold him back from providing 13 amazing hip hop tracks that you could listen to individually and say "Wow!" is something I have never seen before and sets a new standard for the whole genre. I like the extension and all, but the lyrics and the delivery of the line: "...lost in translation, with a whole **** nation, they say I was the abomination of Obama's nation..." I was actually embarrassed for him. Please if you don't know what I'm talking about, you got to go listen to this part of the song right now. You know Kanye, with Pro-tools there is a 'undo' button just press ctrl+z and re-do it. I heard too many takes on this album that could have been recorded better, it automatically loses a point and soils the whole song. It's laziness and unacceptable. However, Mr. West, does improve in one area with each album, his overall music behind the words is nothing short of amazing. Seems weird when I look back thinking Kanye's College Dropout was the best album of 03-04. which I gave a 10 (including lyrics and delivery, one of the only albums I ever gave a perfect score) Since though it's always been his lyrics and delivery holding him back in my opinion. His downfall is in his aim to please certain people, whether it be his idea of what is expected from the street, or the label, whatever it is it's obvious it's not all the way him. You can tell by his swag, certain songs his delivery is on point, others it's just eh...Take the song 'So Appalled' for example, by far in my opinion the least favorite on the album. If it wasn't for Jay's verse I wouldn't even listen to it. You can tell in this song as well as 'Monster' whenever Jay spits, he is in the moment and his emotion is captured perfectly. Kanye on the other hand seems to rely on vocal effects when his emotion isn't all the way with the music to help it blend. I also don't know if Kanye knows what a bridge is, after all these years I have yet to hear a real bridge, closest one I can think of off top is from 'Drunk and Hot Girls, (and it's not even his voice and it's fading into the end of the song). He seems to rely on instrumental break-downs and track extensions for his change ups. One last note about his flow, second verse of Gorgeous is very amateur especially going back into the hook. Now, onto his lyrics, honestly nothing was super impressive, still lots of un-necessary cussing. My favorite punch-line was the 'Family Matters' reference, seemed to be one of his most thought out rhymes on the album. Song concepts were good though, I can't say anything about that, even if it's a love letter to Lucifer. The album is truly a complete project tho, and can be listened to from beginning to end. Its just what I expected when I heard the whole album for the first time. I love the music, my only concern is, I love all Kanye's music but it seems way to often I find out that he only ripped off other songs and turned them into his own. I don't show any sympathy for his sampling style. I think its nothing short of plagiarism. If he is getting as much paper as he claims then he should be held responsible to be 100% original. Don't get me wrong I love a good remix and samples, I realize this is a big chunk of his style, but to parade around and say that your a musical genius while your hits used to be somebody else's hits, it doesn't give him much room to throw temper tantrums for not winning awards. I'm sure this project will be different, I expect him to do well. Thanks- Expand

The opening of "Lost in the World", a Bon Iver sample. I understand that's part of hip hop. But surely original compositions are and should be more respected. On a different note, I didn't know what the fuss about Nicki Minaj was about until I heard "Monster". Jay-Z was great on that track as well.

Finally, after listening to the album and thinking about it's content I was left with this thought, am I the only one who thinks the person who is overreacting to the "Taylor Swift incident" more than ANYONE is Kanye?

But the begining to middle especially the ones with jay z and swiss beats on the track are pretty good listens. I like how he finally told people hey I'm an **** so what, I speak my mind, its a part of rap culture to do so and I think that a lot of his troubles, which many people share, are discussed in his songs. I like that he is using his music as a medium because it really allows him to share how he's feeling and say hey I make good music and that's all that matters. This album is definitely something you can dance to, get stuck in your head, and the thing that I use to love about Kanye is it makes you laugh. He provides a good enough balance that you can feel like the music is hard hitting but not threatening. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mr. West comes out from his self-imposed exile to deliver grandiose production , star-studded features and West's best lyrics to date.

    1. Dark Fantasy : One of the best intros I have heard in a while , from the huge intro to the RZA assisted piano beat this song is just one of the main reasons to own a car with a crazy sound system.

    2. Gorgeous : One of the album's more lyrical songs over a menacing guitar loop. One of the highlights of this song is the breakdown that comes in the second half followed by a Raekwon verse .

    3. Power:

The album's first single . This song was the first snippet of the album that we received , the chanting and clapping are as if a hero had returned are a long absence and is being welcomed home accordingly.
The militaristic beat and guitar riffs just give this song that triumphant feel or should I say 'theme music'

    4. All of the lights [Interlude] : The prelude to the album's most grandiose effort , unlike the track that comes after this one this is filled with soft keys and cello that get you ready for what's to come

    5. All of the lights : As I've said before this is the album's most grandiose effort , blaring horns , non-stop drums and percussion and over 11 vocalists on one track all lead by Rihanna who delivers the infectious chorus.

    6. Monster :

The bass filled track that host's verses from Jay-z , Rick Ross and Nicki Minaj is full of lyrics that boast braggadocio and keeps you bobbing your head from the menacing start to the Justin Vernon ending

    7. So Appalled: Another posse cut featuring the likes of Jay-z ...again , Pusha T , Swizz Beatz and G.O.O.D Music newcomer CyHi da Prynce. This song is line after line of lyrical genius .

    8. Devil In a New Dress:

One of my favourites off the album , this Smokey Robinson song is just smooth Kanye raps about relationship falling apart followed by a guitar solo provided by Kanye's right hand man Mike Dean , then a surprisingly great verse from Rick Ross.

    9. Runaway :

One of the album's most emotional songs which is sung over an emotionless key-driven loop and a Pete Rock sampled beat which has Kanye toasting to the 'Douchebags and **** The song ends with a 3 minutes vocoder solo bursting with emotion .

    10. Hell of A Life : Hell of a Life has Kanye rapping about how he wishes to marry a pornstar over a really heavy sample while interpolating Black Sabbath's 'Iron Man' for the chorus .

    11. Blame Game :

This Aphex Twin sampled beat showcases Kanye's frustration with fame , relationships and love while being assisted by John Legend and an outro by Comedian Chris Rock

    12. Lost in the World: The grand finale of the album using Bon Iver's 'Woods' as the building block for this song . West's verse is full of dichotomy and hopes for leaving a 'plastic life' .

    13. Who Will Survive In America

I view this as the album's epilogue with social commentary given by Gill Scott-Heron and ends with clapping to tell you that the show is over .

No other artist has been able to create a contemporary hip-hop album that's so circuitous, with its multifarious themes and many layers. People who denigrate this piece of music are the ones who haven't immersed themselves in the genre. I see Eminem's name being thrown around; listen, technically, Eminem is very gifted, but as an artist, he's always been limited. On social impact alone, he stands as a top-10 rapper, but when you juxtapose his work to the likes of Nas, Jay-Z, Biggie etc. - and Kanye, it's awfully narrow in scope. Perhaps Ye requires an audience with an eclectic taste? He polarizes those who disparage hip-hop, or those who consider themselves "purists" (the underground/old school hip-hop fan archetype). This could very well be Mr. West's masterpiece. Expand

Kanye West as good as ever! Best Album 2010.
A perfect mix between electro-pop ballad 'Runaway' , dynamic and energetic songs like 'POWER' and 'All of the Lights' and rocking sounds. Lyrics brilliant.

I give it a perfect. It had many flaws but they blended so well. He was capable of creating 10+ different sounding songs, but yet put it together as one. Not to mention almost every song had radio play. Not to say that means anything, but just to say it can be playe in different enviromets.

In November of 2010, I was awaiting nothing more than Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. From the only good thing Nicki Minaj has ever done (the intro of Dark Fantasy), the the powerful closing music under Gil Scott-Heron's Comment No. 1. Interspersed with good, marketable music, in addition to some amazing, less mainstream tracks, I found myself loving it the entire time. My personal favorite moments were Gorgeous, Devil in a New Dress, Runaway, and Lost In The World, all of which were staples in the rest of the album. This album is something completely different from most hip-hop we hear today, and is without a doubt one of the greatest, if not the greatest, albums I have ever listened to. Expand

With this album, West creates a groundbreaking work that has been previously unseen in the genre as far as artistry goes. The production is unbelievably different from any other hip hop album made, with the instrumentation having such a "real" sound to it, for lack of a better word. With My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Kanye expands the definition of hip-hop so broadly that many artists will look to this album as inspiration. The saying "hip hop isn't art" although already invalid; My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is probably the finest work of art the genre has seen. Expand

Hip-Hop relies on innovation - constant progression is essential for its vitality. This single characteristic makes it one of the most interesting of the new genres that the late 20th century has spawned. Just look at how much it has changed throughout the years - the 70's (Disco, comedy influences), the 80's (Jazz/Rock/Soul influences, rich storytelling), the 90's (hard-nosed, oftenHip-Hop relies on innovation - constant progression is essential for its vitality. Just look at how much it has changed throughout the years - the 70's (Disco, comedy influences), the 80's (Jazz/Rock/Soul influences, rich storytelling), the 90's (hard-nosed, often political lyricism, heavy drums, post-Jazz influences) and... and... then it stopped. The 2000's are often regarded as the decade of downfall for Hip-Hop, and, although that's not entirely true, there is some validity behind the argument - the progression throughout the decade was not as evident. Sure, there were the stars (Eminem, 50 Cent, Ludacris), but, overall, only two major forces in mainstream Hip-Hop showcased that progression in style that had become so rare - Outkast and Kanye West. Kanye was always changing - from the soul-influences of "College Dropout" to the melancholic electronic R&B of "808s & Heartbreak". This album, "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy", shows Kanye at his strongest - both lyrically and musically. Each song is entirely distinct and perfected to the highest degree . The 90's Gangsta Rap inspired (yet so seemingly modern) "Dark Fantasy", the Rock-influenced "Gorgeous" and, the album's centerpiece, "Runaway" - all these tracks fully showcase Kanye's thirst for progression and perfection, two aspects that are very rarely combined in perfection. Is it the best Hip-Hop album of all time? No. There is no best album. Is it the best produced Hip-Hop album of all time? Perhaps - it's definitely up there with "The Chronic" and "Stankonia". Is it a great album that's worthy of your attention? Definitely.

The best album Kanye has ever made. Hands down. In my opinion he will never make a better album than this, Yeezus does not even come close to this great album. There is never a dull moment with this album, all the tracks fit together perfectly, and will go down in history as one of the greatest albums ever made. Kanye West is a musical/creative genius.

To put this in a few words, 'My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy' is the Greatest Hip-Hop Album of the 21st Century. Take this into account, 'The College Dropout' and 'Late Registration' are two influential hip-hop Masterpieces that live on though music forever, and this album (My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy) is better than both of them... That's got to mean something...

I hadn't really listened to Kanye West's music, I'd heard some of his big hits and quite enjoyed them but his music isn't usually to my taste. Overall, one of the best albums I've heard for a while.

West is far from rap's deftest lyricist but his neurotic grandstanding is compelling and often pretty funny to boot. [Feb 2011, p.84]
