No doubts about this: Short Movie is a masterpiece.

It’s Marling’s sense of immediacy that makes Short Movie so evocative.

This is Marling at her finest, but as she’s proved five times in a row, the best is always yet to come.

Short Movie stretches its cohesive motifs through all thirteen tracks, without sticking to a plot or forced narrative structure. Instead, the themes of self-reflection and search for belonging and identity move you wantonly through the album.

Short Movie feels like the work of someone who’s going to be around for a long time.

The new developments in sound and style of Marling's fifth album--and the way her leading-lady status continues to evolve--leave it as her most captivating yet. Just watch the movie and don't worry too much about the run time.

Too much of the record lacks that song's percussive drive; all the pretty singing and unhurried tempos start to blend into a tepid listen, and the experimental near-spoken-word turn on Strange is just, well, strange.

Her constant craving to be stronger as a songwriter never lets anyone down and that's something to start with if you have not yet listened to her songs - she tries. And she tries really hard.

Personally, I've loved her third and arguably most challenging album A Creature I Don't Know above all, but simultaneously, Short Movie, as of any of her albums, is a new step, and it's a deep, beautiful and emotional experience from the first track on. It's a nine for now. I might change my mind later. But what the heck. It's not her first album to hold that 'classic' feeling. Expand

The first three songs have a strong percussive drive to them that made me excited for the rest of the album, but after that a lot of the songs are slower and sometimes boring. I think Laura is very talented, and when shes good she's REALLY good, but I wish the album had more consistency. It starts off fast paced and ends with a lingering feel that makes it seem a bit lopsided.
