Mulcahy is a heavy-duty Randy Newman for our times. [Jul 2019, p.95]

First-timers are welcome, of course; as with nearly every record Mulcahy’s made in over the last three decades, The Gus is inviting, infectious, and peppered with just enough enigmas to warrant another spin.

The Gus is a literate, smart, melodious record performed by a vastly overlooked and underrated master of the form. While not as instantly accessible as some of the work by those who celebrate him, his strangely angled view of life is certainly welcome and worthy of that celebration.

An album that reveals fresh layers on every listen. [Jul 2019, p.33]

An album of odd stories, loose ends, beautiful turns of lyrical and musical phrase. We should be grateful for Mark Mulcahy, and for the persistent weirdness of The Gus.

What The Gus really has going for it is that it can serve as an entry to Mulcahy as easily as it can be enjoyed by longtime fans: a solid, if unspectacular entry to his lengthy back catalogue. It doesn’t deviate from his trademark formula, a style that’s worked for him throughout his career, but it never betrays it either.
