This album grabs you by the scruff, throws you around until disorientated, then injects you with some weird trippy downers before picking you back up and booting you up the a*se... and the crazy thing is...you can't wait to go back for more.

I strongly recommend you give it a try.. Go on, I dare you...

I was watching the American Music Awards (AMAs) yesterday and couldn't believe One Direction won like 3 awards!?! It was like being in the Twilight Zone where everyone is different from you. So I went to the computer cuz i remembered hearing about this band and heard some of it on iTunes, and I bought the album and sat down and listened in blissful punk rock satisfaction (if there is such a thing). The energy of the punk as in "Radio Tokyo" and the different vibes coming from songs like "Beginners." Now THIS is a good band! btw, how much of the royalties from selling albums on iTunes do bands receive? I hope it's decent. I heard Garth Brooks wants to start a new music site where the bands get more for their music. If bands like Hookworm can make more money from his site, I hope it's up and running soon! Expand

Shifts gears considerably since Pearl Mystic and establishes a sonically different chapter of their ongoing journey. Definitely a band to watch because the journey is far from over and even better parts could be up their sleeves.

The second album by this immensely talented Leeds band does not disappoint; it's a more than worthy follow up to their great debut. Last year's Pearl Mystic was almost like a 40 minute odyssey of fuzzy psych, and whilst The Hum keeps a lot of the influence that led to that sound, it also showcases a new cleaner cut sound and much more energy than before. Radio Tokyo and The Impasse sound more like their punk and noise routes whilst the closer Retreat is like a revamped version of See No Evil by Television. This is an incredible record, and you need to hear it. Expand

Though they currently enjoy international distribution through one of the biggest indie labels in England, Hookworms insist their group is nothing more than a hobby. The Leeds psych-punk band is but one of many musical pursuits its members currently partake in; they’re still self-managed; and they’re bewildered by the sight of strangers around town wearing their t-shirts.

The impression left by The Hums's buzzing, keys-assisted pseudo-punk is that of a heavier Clinic or even Scottish also-rans Magoo. [Nov 2014, p.72]

There are no wasted notes, no wasted time, and nothing but the impulse to listen again.

One of the best rock'n'roll albums of 2014. [Dec 2014, p.96]
