Whilst the debut got tongues wagging, the follow up is sure to get hearts pounding--a superb collection of tracks that points to a band that knows where it’s going.

The Hum is a shattering, all-encompassing experience; there's climactic rage, broken organs and blank-eyed trance outs. At times it’s like listening to war, but there are also moments of beauty, musical tantrums and periods of bummed out weirdness. The result of all this? Total exhilaration.

Hookworms never come across as arrogant, showy or self-indulgent. They have managed to follow a logical musical progression which will undoubtedly blow many minds.
  4. The Hum is all feel, no bullshit, and it truly gets under your skin.

On The Hum, the likes of "On Leaving" and closer "Retreat" are underlain with frothy keyboards that imbibe them with a touch of pop brilliance.

There are no wasted notes, no wasted time, and nothing but the impulse to listen again.

What Hookworms might lack in image and clarity, they more than make up for by making music that isn't built to linger in the background. It demands attention and deserves it, too.

On The Hum, this delicate balancing act between abrasive aggression and unfettered tunefulness positions Hookworms as an uncompromising experimental act with festival-sized ambitions, capable of synthesizing disparate and often contradictory sounds into a cohesive and compelling whole.

‘Beginners’ and ‘Radio Tokyo’ lead the way in the clout department, and increasingly, Hookworms sound like a band comfortable with being immediate as well as complex.

Where the group from Leeds’ impressiveness lies is in their lighter, less mangled moments.

Where the ambient interludes on Pearl Mystic felt like necessary pauses for the band to catch their breath, on The Hum they serve a more crucial, connective quality, melting down their road-running rave-ups and molding them into "Mother Sky"-high odysseys and opium-den comedown ballads.

This is top-notch psychedelic rock, in so many ways better than all those ancient bands and songs it’s built upon, but it’s presented in such a garbled way that the songs often lose their impact.

In spite of the apparent minimalism, Hookworms deliver a sonic feast for the ears that knows how to capture an all-encompassing whole rather than a moment in time. It wants to be everything at once, brightly exposed even if some of its color is lost.

Hookworms have a huge, infectious energy, best evidenced on the wild organ grooves and ridiculously weighty drumming of ‘Radio Tokyo’, but some of the finest moments come when they adopt a more considered, less-immediate approach.

They are far more interesting when they let in some light, most notably on The Hum’s standout, the simmering Retreat.

The impression left by The Hums's buzzing, keys-assisted pseudo-punk is that of a heavier Clinic or even Scottish also-rans Magoo. [Nov 2014, p.72]

The Hookworms aren't desperately trying to please on this album, you listen to this on THEIR terms. Visceral honest and uncompromising, this is a step forward from their superb debut "Pearl Mystic".
I strongly recommend you give it a try.. Go on, I dare you...

The Leeds psych-punk band is but one of many musical pursuits its members currently partake in; they’re still self-managed; and they’re bewildered by the sight of strangers around town wearing their t-shirts. It was like being in the Twilight Zone where everyone is different from you. "Where are the truly good bands" I thought. So I went to the computer cuz i remembered hearing about this band and heard some of it on iTunes, and I bought the album and sat down and listened in blissful punk rock satisfaction (if there is such a thing). The energy of the punk as in "Radio Tokyo" and the different vibes coming from songs like "Beginners." Now THIS is a good band! btw, how much of the royalties from selling albums on iTunes do bands receive? I hope it's decent. I heard Garth Brooks wants to start a new music site where the bands get more for their music. If bands like Hookworm can make more money from his site, I hope it's up and running soon! Full Review »
