An extraordinary debut from a new British-based band who combine a gipsy swagger with tremulous sensitivity and gothic rock drama.

More thoughtful and restrained than the heavily tattooed band's raucous live (and already very well-attended) shows may have promised, Shallow Bed is full of passion, nonetheless. [May 2012, p.88]

Shallow Bed is refreshingly free of archaic, "old timey" references; it feels both relevant and familiar.

This mix of fearlessness, craft and believability is irresistible. [April 2012, p.90]

A rare collection of songs that succeeds in both evoking the ethereal and forcing you to reach for the volume button.

It is to Dry The River's credit, however, that they have in Shallow Bed created an album that both plays to their strengths and showcases a diversity of modes, each sculpted authentically. An outstanding effort.

Liddle has previously described their sound as "folky gospel music played by a post-punk band," and Shallow Bed's eclectic spiritual nature proves that isn't just hollow talk.

Shallow Bed is solid, but it's not quite on the same level as something like Helplessness Blues or even Sigh No More.

Although at times the tunes and excitement commonly associated with a debut album can become lost in painful pursuit of authenticity, this is a surefooted and uncompromising collection.

While Dry The River stick resolutely--and somewhat predictably--to their 'start quiet, build to a stomping ending' mantra throughout, Shallow Bed is an uplifting debut.
  11. Dry The River have made a very good debut album.

Dry the River carries a touch of Shearwater's trilling flair in the swell of "No Rest," and at times Liddle riddles with equally arcane lyrics from his anthropology and medical backgrounds. It's what lingers beneath this riverbed that compels.

    It's like a late-aughts hipster cocktail.
