Jan 17, 2018The juxtaposition between weighty lyrical themes and musical buoyancy is cathartic. Simultaneously of its time while managing to sound like a classic, The Official Body is a healing experience; there is light in the darkness.
-
Jan 26, 2018The Official Body is a frequently dazzling example of how resistance can be fortifying and even fun.
-
Jan 18, 2018Instead of offering up another vaguely-feminist cash-grab or a haphazard political patch job, Shopping continue to do what they do best, using their bass lines and unique perspective to provide a source of kinship, understanding and an outlet to vent general frustration.
-
Jan 19, 2018The Official Body proves why it’s remained durable over so many iterations and, for the London trio, across three albums. There’s a directness to its pleasures that’s unflagging for all 10 tracks here.
-
Jan 19, 2018The trio is so refreshing and exhilarating because of the space they elbow-out for themselves and the vibrant spirit they pump into the exhausted genre, proving that simply adding some cavernous echo to a track isn’t enough.
-
Jan 19, 2018Produced by Edwyn Collins, it’s full of immediately infectious tracks that burrow deep into your head before working their way down to your limbs.
-
Jan 18, 2018It’s an odd concoction of fun and confrontation, at once rigorously disciplined and existentially silly. The Official Body is a hard one, toned and taut and not fucking around, except when it is.
-
Jan 16, 2018A dazzlingly creative effort, it might well be SHOPPING’s most complete, concise, and fascinating release yet.
-
Jan 16, 2018Overall, another great album from one of the UK’s best underground talents who may not remain so underground for long.
-
Jan 18, 2018It's a record that finds Shopping transcending a difficult set of circumstances to create a standout album.
-
Jan 23, 2018You can’t listen to the music found here without dancing, which is a blessing and a curse. It’s fun at first, but eventually you’ll need a breather.
-
Jan 16, 2018Shopping’s sound is minimal, and almost every song kicks off with a Spaghetti Western guitar riff before being met by a steady beat and chanting vocals by various members.
-
Jan 16, 2018Unfortunately, The Official Body remains confined to rudimentary rock arrangements and rigid structures. It doesn't reconcile these contradictions until its final three tracks, which makes for restless, if brief, listening in its middle entries.
-
Feb 14, 2018Repetition is considered their weakest strength, which isn't true at all--they introduce shrill synth textures and dub elements with a good understanding of technique. It does add the slightest variation to their acerbic post-punk, all rendered with a cheerful stance even if there’s an apparent loss of rage. Still, this party feels less exciting than the night before.
-
Jan 16, 2018What's most unfortunate is that Shopping can do better--evidenced not only by their previous work but by a few stand-out tracks on this album.
