Nude beach A-GO-GO is the best song i've ever heard, and this album would not be complete without it. It works so well on the album. Songs like Wallace, Idle Delilah and Luxury prove how Azealia can indeed rap and sing, a skill rarely shown in the industry.

In addition to the covering rap which could end to be boring, the instrumentals are so unique in their creative and efficient ability to engage the listener with something completely new and mad that even a **** voice could fit well with them (I'm not saying that Banks has a **** voice).

There is only ONE excellent song: Chasing Time.
The others are good but uncoordinated, a few of them is mediocre instead.

If there is a new classic woman in the hip-hop world, it's Azealia Banks, definitely not Iggy.

This game changer album served what she had promised. She didn't try to change it for a mainstream album (what Interscope wanted) and she fought hard to leave the label and release this masterpiece. It doesn't have any bad song and the genre mixes from song to song is just heavenly.

The old Azealia's success mixed with new jams and very structural lyrics, its a masterpiece.

Can't say nothing but: Azealia is the best in her category!

However, I cannot deny that this album has many strengths, though it certainly is not all positive. On the plus side, she certainly has a certain swagger about here that is evident in her flow and her delivery that make her very appealing. Her lyrics, when she is trying to be lyrical, is also enjoyable. Above all, however, is her ability to make a track that is just impossible not to move along to. Multiple times here, it was impossible not to feel the urge to dance along a little bit to the song. As an overall, tracks like “Ice Princess”, “JFK”, and “Soda”, really stood out to me and made me appreciate Azealia Banks the artist a lot more than I expected to. In addition, I admire her risk taking with beats. A very unconventional sounding album, these beats are all over the place and force this album into fitting into just about 0 genres. It truly is rap, though, in the sense of rapping being the sum result of every genre that came before it and that is never more true than on Broke With Expensive Taste. However, this does come back to bite her at times, as some of the beats here are horrible and she also struggles on some of them, failing to match the energy brought by the beat and, thus, being swallowed by that beat and looking weak. As a whole, this is a solid debut album and I look forward to seeing what the future has in store for Ms. Banks, assuming she can keep her mouth shut for once. Expand

While Azealia Banks' versatility and mixture of rhythms and composition might arguably be her most prominent and best characteristic or her biggest disadvantage, what's solely objective is her ambition and boldness to try things out and offer one of the most original works in the genre (and in the industry itself).

Drops mic and the crowd screams "Encore!"

Azealia Banks has undoubtedly shut it down with this album. No one has approached music with this level of creativity, versatility and actual talent while keeping it all together in the last 10 years. If she does not win awards for this, this industry is officially out of touch.

There are many highlights on this album, and some lowlights as well. This album is almost flawless. Very experimental, but that's what makes it fun to listen to. Azealia's rapping is great, and she shows off her vocals as well. Probably one of the best albums of 2014! It's a shame that all of the delays for the release and all that **** ruined the hype for the album, causing it to underperform badly on the charts.

I'ts amazing how the album go from hip-hop, salsa, jazz and many more. Banks and the writers did a great job with the lyrics. I respect her for not rapping n-gga or f-ck every 2 lines. The sixteen track record, far from just worth the wait, is an audacious fusion of lively house and dance beats, that paired with Banks’ phenomenal vocals make this one of the hottest releases of 2014.

This album has clearly been a labour of love for Azealia Banks: she’s postponed, edited and re-edited (dropping questionable tracks like ‘ATM Jam’) and refused to compromise creatively, demanding to be released from a major record deal so she could make the album she envisioned. This serious artistic approach is reflected in the high quality and ballsy individuality of the record, which unlike most of the year’s releases refuses to blend into the charts.

There is something bewitching about Banks’ flow; her confident enunciation and the smoky character filled timbre of her voice set her sound apart. The daring lyrical content is sexually aggressive yet not coquettish, unapologetically glamorous and playful, yet critical of media superficiality, and frankly far more sincere than most popular hip hop. Banks is a skilled lyricist and it’s worth re-listening to some of her tracks to pick up the humour and political messages that often go missed on first listening.

    Azealia banks

The albums melodies and beats are mainly inspired by British dance, dn’b and house music, which gives the album a refreshingly upbeat and energetic feel without the griminess of the current trend of dubstep inspired electro. The highlights of the album are the tracks where Banks lets her soulful singing voice as well as her incredible rapping skills shine, like in the brutally funky ‘Ice Princess’ and the housey ‘Soda’. While, more experimental tracks like the synth-heavy ‘Heavy, Metal and Reflective’ or stripped down calypso style beat and wavering guitar of ‘Idle Delilah’, offer inventive reinterpretations of genres laced with razor sharp rap. The only disappointing track is ‘Yung Rapunxel’, which sounds cluttered and disjointed compared to the stylised harmonies of the rest of the album.

Broke With Expensive Tastes is a much needed injection of fun and funk in what has been a dull year for hip hop and dance music. Azealia Banks brings fresh wit, intelligence and personality into what has become a complacent and repetitive genre and it will be interesting to see which direction she goes in next.

The album is truly story-telling. Azealia stands out for embracing considered “broke” musical elements and transforming them into memorable work, which ends up leaving an “expensive taste” in our mouths. The only problem is that the execution in some tracks lacks some sort of deepness, required to tell such impacting reflections.
