Before he became self-indulgent and exploited his fame and money, he made a record with some of the best soul samples ever put into a record. Not to mention his knack for wordplay, which he seems exceptionally clever at on this record.

West's debut head-bopper is just that: a head-bopper. "Dropout" tries to accomplish a tough juggling act - paying equal attention to subverting braggadocious hip-hop cliches and embracing them (if a bit sarcastically) to make a more lively, enjoyable album. Unfortunately, this juggling comes across as hypocrisy rather than compromise for the sake of art. Because of this, even inWest's debut head-bopper is just that: a head-bopper. It has quite a legacy in redefining modern hip-hop which was in desperate need of changing as its mainstream popularity began to dip. The College Dropout, whilst filled with an annoying quantity of skits is also reasonably consistent and inventive.

Sensational debut. From the classic street-life opener, "We Don't Care", to the social/self critique of "All Falls Down", the soulful r&b bump'n'grind of "Slow Jams", the charging church choir-surged "Jesus Walks", or the near-death experience/hip-hop rebirth revelation that is "Through The Wire", this was a record that kept me not only in love, but returning time and time again. Kanye’s production on this album was something new and amazing. It stands out, like the other early-2000’s hip hop albums failed to do. His lyrics were also unique. The only thing that I could say something negative about was the skits. However, these skits helped getting the feel of the album across, so I do not think this drags the album down to much.

If the length feels too much for the standards of today (2021) we still can salute Kanye for inviting many meaningful artists to his party, as Jay-Z, Common and Mos Def. They all bring a bit more depth and versatility in the process of the album. Skits are funny but unfortunately let few room for replayability and soon become skippable and untasty. Some songs also appear to be dull fillers but however contribute to these unmissable 2000's feels. All Falls Down- god this song is so uplifting sounding even though the lyrics really aren't. Syleena Johnson does so well on this track as well.

Spaceship- I feel this song is simply underrated. It is one of my favorite songs from the album. I just want to listen to this driving through the city.

    Jesus Walks- Classic. Listen to it. So good.;

Never let me down- Need to listen to again as I just started to like it.

Get em high- Talib and common did really good on this as well. Beat is sick.

The New Workout Plan- one of Ye's funniest songs. ending beat is used in J cole's Work Out.

Slow Jamz- this song is SO DAMN GOOD. Just started liking it after not the first time and literally can't stop. never skipped on my playlist.

    Breathe in breathe out- meh.

School spirit- Love it. So positive sounding and soul samples and everything about it. It is edited though which is odd.

    Two Words- gotta relisten

Through the WIRE- SO GOOD YOU WILL ENJOY

Family Business- sad and happy. so good.

Last Call - gotta listen again.

Amazing album with good flow, lyrics, beats, everything you could want from an album. My favorite debut album and is very well put together with countless skits that aren’t amazing, but entertaining to listen to. Kanye provides a good listening experience.

Just to show how much of a breath of fresh air this 21 track album was, when Kanye showed multiple masterpieces on this, Jesus Walks being a prime example, to his colleagues, they straight up laughed at him. The multiple grammy's and love from both critics and fans, quickly proved them wrong. You can feel mr. West's constant persistence on here to make a piece of art, and it shows off. Most songs have managed to remain just as fresh and catchy 16 years after it's release. The cheerful and mind-blowing incorporation of soul samples isn't the last contributor to that. 10/10 Expand

Not many rappers come out with a College Dropout level of project with their debut but thats why Kanye has always set the trends since. A true masterpiece. Amazing beats & bars from Ye. Have never got sick of any of these tracks all these years later.

The Album can be summed up in one sentence:
This is one of the best debut albums of all time, and maybe even Kanye’s best project to date as well as being his first. More than 15 years later, this is still a timeless classic.

the "old Kanye" at his highest. classic hip hop samples galore. Ye raps produces and damn near composes this masterpiece of art. Grammy winning lyrics and beats. my favorite track from this "Through The Wire" by the way this album was made during his time experiencing a life threatening car accident that could've cut his life and career short. a musical genius. a musical trademark of Hip Hop.

From start to finish your taken on a comedic, enthralling trip through Kanye's musical ability, displaying his production skill and rapping (even whilst having his mouth surgically shut). The feature are well utilised and add tremendously to the vibe of the album. All throughout he keeps you intrigued with little reason to skip any part of the project, maintaining consistency even in the songs that are not as good. Some of his best are on this including: All Falls Down, Through The Wire and Jesus Walks to name a few. Overall, arguably his best project and a instant classic. Expand

Before this album, Kanye West didn't become the ruler he is today. He was the acclaimed producer of Blueprint who served up hit tracks one after another. But his real dream was to become a rapper and that was a difficult task. In an industry dominated by gangsta rap and hardcore rap, it was hard for a backpacker like Kanye West to shine. But those troubles are furthermore reason why College Dropout is one of the best debut albums ever. Why? Because he overcame them with one HUGE leap.

Kanye isn't the gangsta/hustler type. He is the average guy who has something to say. He discusses various topics like college education, his drop out, materialism, consumerism, religion and its role in music among others. Not expected of a normal rap album because it sounds too normal. But that is the beauty of the album. West fearlessly dares to rap about things that don't include money, crack, girls, or clothes. And he does it with his own style that is powerful and engaging. He can be funny and serious at the same time. Lyrically, he isn't half-bad. He is able to interest his audience throughout the course of the album.

And the production? Oh man. The beats are surprisingly so catchy yet inventive. Jesus Walks features a pounding club peat and chants that accompany his messages of Jesus and lack of God on radio simply because there is no profitability. And The New Workout Plan features a booty shaker that is laced with Middle Eastern violins.

West's wordplay is still to be developed and some songs feel like filler tracks. Nonetheless, College Dropout is an outstanding achievement by one so normal to most of us yet so unique to his fellow rap peers.

Kanye's story is a truly inspiring one. The story of a producer that wanted to make his own music, who was doubted across the board. After he got in that terrible accident it drove him to do what he wanted to do, make something he could call his own. So he did just that, and what a strong way to enter the ring. Like every hip-hop album (even the great ones), Kanye West's The College Dropout is marred by too many guest artists, too many interludes, and just too many songs period. (I challenge every hip-hop artist working today to record just one album with 12 tracks or less-no skits, no guests, no filler.)

Most producers who approach the mic do so at their peril, but on Dropout, West turns out to be a full-service hip-hop artiste.
