Great album. Funny, on-point, and relatable, with enough catchy hooks to be enjoyed on first listen, but enough depth and variety to be enjoyable on the tenth listen. Thirsty Ego Raps and Doug Stamper are particularly great.

A catchy, (critically) underrated album from the LA Hellfyre collective. It's got it's own style and spirit that encourages multiple listens for hip-hop buffs as well as indie peeps perhaps looking for something a little different.

Very good album. While not as technically capable as other current rappers, Open Mike Eagle is a very thought provoking, relatable rapper. Not only that, he's very funny too. Doug Stamper (Advice Raps) is the funniest track I've heard all year, hands down (especially toward the end). There are some particularly funny lines on this album ("I'm president of the rappers who don't condone dateVery good album. Doug Stamper (Advice Raps) is the funniest track I've heard all year, hands down (especially toward the end). There are some particularly funny lines on this album ("I'm president of the rappers who don't condone date rape"). That being said, there are also some very introspective lines on this album too ("There's mad shootings on the news, unless it's in the Chi, cause blacks and Mexicans can die"). The only thing that sometimes holds this album back are the flat and sharp vocals. To be honest, they're only particularly bad on Qualifiers, which still has some great bars on it. And the closing track, Big Pretty Bridges, is amazing. It's truly a beautiful track, and a fitting way to end the album. Open Mike Eagle really separates himself from the pack on this release, and I'm looking forward to whatever this guy puts out next. Expand

As awkwardly beautiful as much of dark Comedy is, it's such a tricky album that it is a difficult to warm to. [Aug 2014, p.62]

Open Mike Eagle does one better and shows a path forward for hip-hop.

Even with its melancholy closing, Dark Comedy is an incredibly fulfilling listen.
