Delightful pure pop. It sounds sweet and lush . Like all of Monae albums it tells a larger conceptual story that reflects some real life problem through an afro futuristic lense. This is the least serious out of the series and instead seeks to revel in the joy of self discovery. The Brian Wilson feature is a big deal and continues her streak (see: Prince,Erykah& Big boi).

Overall, a solid album. There are a couple bangers, a lot of songs that are pretty good, and some ok songs. There aren't any songs that are horrendously bad or anything like that. If you like Janelle Monae already, it's a must-buy, but I don't consider it to be like ~the album of the century~ by any means.

With her amazing voice Janelle manages to cleverly tackle some raw political and identity problems in today's society. She futhermore successfully does it by approaching varied musical genres. Until the end, she maintains an original approach while admitting her uncertainty about the choices she makes. This does not prevent her to deliver impressive and confident lyrics is 'I Like That' among other. Meaningful presences of guests help her to switch the moods of her songs.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Dirty Computer was one of the best albums of 2018. It has definitely aged well with themes of empowerment , love, racial equality and sex at the center. The lyricism, production, choruses, melodies, raps, hooks and vocals are just amazing on this album. The diverse production ranging from RnB, POP ROCK, FUNK, SOUL , synthpop and Hip Hop is amazing. Every song is a highlight in one way or another. My favorites are Crazy, Classic Life,, Screwed, Django Jane, Pynk, Make me feel, I like that, don't judge me, So Afraid and Americans. Not forgetting that Janelle proves to be a formidable vocalist and rapper on this album. Expand

Here, Prince's protégé collaborates with Brian Wilson, Pharrell Williams and more to deliver a cohesive project with stunning vocals, upbeat production and confident lyrics. These lyrics cover a plethora of important themes & topics, which range from racism and feminism, to freedom and power through sexuality. However, there are certain lyrical content/messages that occasionally feel so on-the-face that they can momentarily pull you out of the music.

Overall, it's ambitous, and it feels iconic. It's energetic. It's sexy. It has a vibe. It pulls you into a precisely-orchestrated musical world. It calls back to the 80's whilst simultaneously feeling futuristic - also, the accompanying short film is really great.

The artwork is one of the best album covers that I have ever seen, and my top tracks from this project are: 'Dirty Computer', 'I Like That', 'Django Jane' and 'So Afraid'. I would rate this album 8/10.

Janelle Monáe is a pop artist that deserves to listened to with too much attention. Here you can abstract excellent bass lines and rhythm sections, fresh and dancing harmonic lines in a kind of Prince's modern sonority with a sense of more palpable accessibility. Her talent is one in a million indeed. As far as I´m concerned, Dirty Computer can easily have the same level of incidence as Kendrick Lamar´s To Pimp a Butterfly on a near future, when we´ll discuss which albums better reflected our contemporary landscape, and how accurate they depicted the macro-sociocultural issues we´re facing.

This album is fantastic. The message is crystal clear, the transitions are on point, the songs are various, from viby Pynk to the beautiful Don't Judge Me ballad.
Favourite song from the album is I Like That. Also love the pair Screwed-Django Jane, that really HAVE TO be listened to together.
Janelle's work here really deserves some reward

This is ALBUM OF THE YEAR right here. I was a bit scared before listening because it had been so long since The Electric Lady, but this was certainly worth the wait! Janelle keeps her sci-fi theme going, but brings many songs to a very, very personal level, making this album an absolute keeper. Favourite tracks: Crazy Classic Life, Django Jane, Pynk, I Like That

I've played this album repeatedly. It's a must have this year. Tune the world out with some lights out and just play. This album can be played throughout. There isn't a song to skip and you don't get that a lot nowadays. My picks: Dirty Computer, Take a Byte, Django Jane, PYNK, I Like That, Don't Judge Me, Make Me Feel (10/10)

Sincerely I do not expected anything about this album but I listened and my opinion is that is a album with clear sound, simple but at the same time well cared for. I like their lyrics, the voices in off and the and the atmosphere that you create when you listen to it

The album is definitely a grower, however it is a masterpiece. At times it does get cringy when it mentions politics though lmao. The 'emotion picture' definitely explains the concept.

Best album so far. I listened to it first and then watched the motion picture that’s available on youtube, and saw various interviews in which Janelle explained everything. It is so well constructed. The songs, the visual representing each song, the wardrobe, the effects, the transitions to each story and how the story is told is very engaging. Congrats to her and her team. Amazing work!

Dirty Computer is a masterpiece. Every song is completely different and every song is saying something. Janelle makes this album her most personal to date, talking about her sexuality, racism, discovering herself, etc. This is one of the best albums of the year, but it will be possibly the best. Don't judge me and I´m afraid really broke my heart.

arguably the best album of the year so far. this is the best homage to queerness, femininity & unapologetic blackness. and the emotion picture give even more life to the music, I've recently became a fan this year along with this new era and this album secured me as a Janelle stan. incredible concept, amazing music composing & exquisite writing. I could go on & on... this is musical perfection.

While this album is absolutely fabulous, it is definitely not her best. The songs invoke emotion and flow together amazing and the story they tell is beautiful. BUT, it is shown in ArchAndroid that her ability to weave together songs into a story is much better than what was shown here. I adore this album but it waa missing that certain Monaé charm that she had in ArchAndroid.

This album is well in the lead for 2018 album of the year. Strong in concept, strong in character, strong in its message. But most of all it's good and fun music. Janelle was truly in the zone when she put this album together. Best songs: Crazy Classic Life, Dirty Computer, Take a Byte, Screwed, I like That, Don't Judge Me, Americans.

It is vivid. Monae also brought a gender lesson, strong statements about freedom and her wish to see everyone’s good.

    FAV TRACKS: Dirty Computer/ Crazy, Classic, Life/ Take A Byte/ Screwed/ Pynk/ Make Me Feel/ Americans.

Least Favorite Tracks: I Like That (It is a very forgettable music; I think Monae did not put tenderness and the beat is repetitive and annoying though.)

Janelle has a beautiful voice and she shares more and more of her psyche and personality on each album. This release is a breathe of fresh air, maybe a few moments feel too poppy for my tastes like Zoe Kravitz's vocals on 'Screwed', but then again that song has many brilliant song elements like the vocoder effect over Janelle's rapping or the layers of guitar loops. Monae continues to be so far ahead of her time. Much like The ArchAndroid, Dirty Computer is likely to be the type of album you listen to many years later and think about how there is still nothing out there that sounds anything like it. A revolutionary album from a revolutionary woman who continues to deconstruct societal barriers and constructions through her music.

Hints of Michael Jackson's melodic moonwalking lace in the type of hip-hop ennui that will appeal to fans of Solange's A Seat at the Table, plus a sexy swagger of feminist liberation that screams 2018.

After navigating complex matrices of identity under an indulgent, accessible veneer, Dirty Computer is ultimately--even “simply”--a cathartic assertion of self in a hostile system.
