This is a drastically underrated album. It's telling that the most popular track is "Ubu", which is actually just mediocre compared to most of the album. "Ubu" tends to follow the direction of most radio-friendly alternative music these days, while tracks like "No. 28", "Groundswell" and "Hyakki Yako" are slow-burners with soaring melodies and uniqueness.

If you're a fan of songs that end in a dramatic fashion, you'll probably love this album as the most infectious melodies close out the tracks.

Great album that unfortunately isn't getting the respect it deserves. Luckily, they popped up on Sirius XM for me...

Methyl Ethel's sophomore LP begins promisingly enough. ... Then things go south. "Act of Contrition" and "Groundswell," whose slogging beat and island vibe sound wildly out of place, are clunkers.

Bands like Christine and the Queens and Mother Mother have attempted the same swagger-filled beats that Methyl Ethel have tried on Everything Is Forgotten, and each has successfully made a jam-worthy song. However, within the genre of indie, the same swagger groove tends to be artificial, and the same soul-searching loses its way amongst the noise.

    It's an album that's trying very hard--and succeeding. [May 2017, p.108]
