I was pleasantly surprised by this hidden gem of an album. Niall was the 1D guy who flew under the radar, but now he soars on his own beautifully crafted melodies and thoughtful, unique lyrics that are rich with imagery and mature beyond his years. A handful of these tunes pay admirable homage to classics of 70s and 80s rock, especially the darker, more mysterious "On the Loose," the infectious and Fleetwood Mac-esque "Since We're Alone," and the absolutely showstopping "Mirrors." These rockier tunes are complimented by a selection of easy-listening, soothing yet full and charismatic melodies. Highlights are the heartbreakingly relatable "Too Much to Ask," the sweet "Fire Away" which gives off an undeniable Cat Stevens vibe, and of course the title track "Flicker," a strings-laden story of holding onto a love that's slowly burning out right before your eyes.

For reasons unknown, there's a regular version of the album that omits three of the absolute best songs, which are only featured on the Deluxe version. To enjoy this album to its fullest, consider "Flicker (Deluxe)" the only option for you. In addition to the aforementioned "Mirrors," the celebratory Irish-drinking tune "On My Own" is this album's 11 o'clock number and showcases Niall's truly fantastic vocal ability, and "The Tide" is another folk-rocky track that you'll want to blast over and over again, belting out every word.

Not a One Direction fan? Well, here's a news flash: Niall Horan ain't One Direction. He's an artist all his own with a one-of-a-kind voice and stories to tell through his music that are undoubtedly going to span generations of dedicated listeners. 10/10 for "Flicker (Deluxe)." Go get it, slide into the CD player in your car, roll down the windows, crank the volume, and rock out to a heck of a debut.

So far this album has 2 certified platinum singles for This Town and Slow Hands from several countries and more to come I am sure. Slow Hands hit #1 at US Top Radio 40, Adult Radio and Dance Club Song. Niall wrote every song and actually recorded with a live band.

A promising opening salvo from the most consistent One Direction member. Horan showcases his own instrumental abilities; clear, sweet vocals; and emotional vulnerability. It may be safe, but it's also laid-back and easy to listen to. Horan does what he does very well, and knows exactly when and how to edit so not a single track feels forced or over-produced.

Slow Hands is the song that won't die, and rightly so. You won't hear anything like that on the radio today. It is a clever romp that takes me back to my 80s prime. Other notable listens include On the Loose, a breezy tune that will bring back memories of the one that got away, and you're glad they did. You and Me and Mirrors are sublime and deserve to be savored for the lovely sentiments they evoke. Many of the lyrics are relatable and I find myself applying them to my own life. I agreed to go with my friend to Niall's concert next month and got the album free with purchase of our ticket package, and knew little to nothing about him before that. For fun I popped it in my car, and all I can say is, holy cow, I was NOT expecting the kind of stripped-down acoustic sound from a former boybander. You can tell this guy is really writing from the heart. The lyrics are almost painfully genuine. Feels like you're reading his diary. And I am not kidding when I say that every single one of these songs could probably have great success as a single. They're ALL catchy and memorable and well-crafted, even the slower ballads. It takes a truly gifted artist to put out an album where you can say that about every single song. I'm just really, really surprised, but in a great way. I'll be eagerly awaiting his next one. In a day and age where there's lots of basic, meaningless fluff on the radio, this is some good old-fashioned MUSIC. Expand

I was listening to the third song when I purchased the whole album. It's a pure joy. The first track "On The Loose" has the soul of Fleetwood Mac's "Rumors". It's an homage with an updated vibe that suits his vocals perfectly. Track two is "This Town". A simple and well crafted acoustic ballad about that one love that you never forget. The lyrics are straightforward and there's an honesty in the way that Horan delivers them that makes this song more than the sum of it's parts. The third track is a duet with Grammy winner Maren Morris called "Seeing Blind". It's fun and catchy with a country flare. It's SO catchy that by the end I was singing along with a smile on my face. I could definitely see some crossover potential here. Track four "Slow Hands" is a funky 80's throwback type of song with hints of country and I can't wait to groove along to it in my car. Track five's "Too Much To Ask" is about the feeling of not quite being able to move on after a big break-up that we all can relate to. Horan's vocals shine on this one and he emotes those feelings of longing and loss perfectly. Track six is "Paper Houses". It's all about working so hard on a relationship just to have it fall apart anyway. His vocals soar on the chorus and you really get a feel for what a great songwriter he is. The imagery is spot-on. Track seven's "Since We're Alone" is all about being able to pour your heart out for that one person you can trust with all your insecurities. The star of this one, for me, was Horan's beautiful falsetto. Track eight is the title track "Flicker". The songwriting and delivery is perfection. It's delicate and understated. Stunning. Track nine is "Fire Away" and it's one of the best on the album. The last track on the standard edition is "You And Me". It stays in that folky/country vein and hooked me with the first line. A great end. A quick note about the bonus tracks. 11 "On My Own" is a fun pub song sang with a large dose of Irish flare. 12. "Mirrors" I am at a loss about the decision to make this a "bonus" track and not to feature it on the actual album. It's a strong single contender and, once again, the writing and vocals shine. 13. "The Tide". The song that should have been the album closer. Overall, I found this to be an excellent first album. It's honest and doesn't try to be anything it's not. Horan's vocals and writing style are sincere and have a charm about them that's endearing and hard to resist. If this is the start, I can't wait to see what the future has in store from him. Expand

Flicker is refreshing to listen to, each track better than the last. Coming from someone who generally doesn't enjoy country music, I found myself repeatedly going back to Seeing Blind ft. Maren Morris. Another good thing about this album is it's versatility. It's a track on Flicker for everyone. There hasn't been an album this year that I have managed to listen to in its entirety, until Flicker. It starts off with On The Loose, which is was the perfect opener for Niall Horan's debut album. You also have deeply personal songs such as Flicker and Paper Houses, that manage to pull on the heart strings. Slow Hands, a classic that dominated the airwaves this summer with its sultry, rock vibe. Another personal favorite is On My Own, albeit that some lyrics are a bit comical at times but it demonstrates his Irish-roots with the folksy tone it provides. I feel that this album is genuine to who Niall Horan has always wanted to be as an artist, which is refreshing. Inspiration for the album is clear although maybe unexpected from a former boyband member but Naill Horan's inclusion of the influences feels fresh and different. It is the first full album I have liked for more than 3 songs (in this case go with the Deluxe version those additional 3 songs are worth it alone).

One of the best albums of 2017 and, in my opinion, the best of One Direction's solo albums so far! I've had it on repeat for the last 3 days and it just keep getting better and better. This album just VIBES and is such a nice collection of songs to sit back and relax to. My faves on the album are Seeing Blind ft. Maren Morris, Since We're Alone, and Mirrors.

A great first album! Niall has created a distinct sound and vibe with this album, I love the deceptively simple lyrics. Niall made himself surprisingly vulnerable for a new artist whose previous experience was as part of a massive pop group and his honesty really pays off on flicker. Going into listening to Flicker for the first time i knew that i had to like at least some of the songs because i had already heard This Town, Slow Hands, and Too Much To Ask and i found each to be better than the last. i was not disappointed, not only that but i was very shocked by each song and how poetic and revealing i found the lyrics. Niall's voice is very strong and beautiful throughout each song. The instrumental aspect of the album was always either very beautiful and soothing, or strong and exciting. i enjoyed the lyrics from each song and that they each spoke a story that had no gimmicks behind it. Songs like Mirrors - where i heard that Niall said himself was about young women who have real struggles and him wanting to let them know that they are not alone - to songs like Fire Away - where he sings about letting his partner know that he is there and he will respect her wanting to keep her distance and that he will listen, even if he doesn't understand, because he cares - to On My Own - which was a very rocky song about enjoying his own company and simply being more than okay on his own. Each song spoke to me and got me excited in very different ways. Some like the title track of the album, Flicker, were tear-inducing. Even The Tide, which may have been masked as an up-beat song, but had lyrics of fearing a loved one leaving, caused me to cry. This album is not only beautiful, but it's true and inspiring. Flicker has by far proven to be my favorite album to date. I've grown up on so many different music categories (from rap to country to rock to pop, I've listened to it all) and i have to say, no other album has made me feel the way this one does. Kudos to Mr. Niall Horan. i can't wait to see what else he has in store, and i definitely recommend that you take a listen for yourself of you haven't already. Expand

Artfully done album by the only member of One Direction that seems to know who they are. Horan keeps in touch with his musical roots with this emotional and brilliantly cohesive album. Horan doesn't use any gimmicks; he doesn't change his image or musical style to impress or push away from his boyband reputation. He does not follow in the footsteps of Zayn or Harry Styles (or even the other two members who are still working on their solo albums) who seemed to change completely overnight upon entering their solo careers. No, Horan sticks to his guns, and in a way, in this world where everyone tries too hard to be the next cultural hot topic, is very admirable.

This album tells a somber story of love that did not have a happy ending, which is strangely refreshing in it's soft, sometimes melancholy, sometimes vibrant, tones. Tracks like "Since We're Alone" and "Flicker" contain gorgeous vocals. "Fire Away" is, simply, the sweetest, most stripped down song of 2017. "On My Own" is certainly the most memorable song, with it's mountain-man drinking song vibes. "Slow Hands" is the poppiest song on this more folksy sounding album, and it's use prevents the album from sounding too monotonous.

A lot of the songs sound far better live, which is truly saying something, since most of the studio versions already sound so complete. The first track, "On the Loose" is a good example of a song that should be heard live first.

I believe that Horan has a good career ahead of him. There is absolutely no need to be so experimental on one's first album, and I applaud him for his honestly; not just lyrically, but musically and image-wise. As I said, Horan knows who he is and simply wants to share that in this album. If that means he's not "pushing any envelopes", why fault him?

I'm not going to review this album from a "does it distinguish itself among the masterpieces of pop" perspective, because I'm not arrogant enough to judge what a masterpiece of pop music would be.
