Truly the best lyricism of Taylor’s career (and that’s no easy feat!) As well as gorgeous lyrics, the production is also impeccable. The way it hugs her soft, fluttering vocals is excellent. The whole listening experience is like a dream. Bravo to Taylor, her collaborators and producers, old and new.

Swift’s surprising eight studio album is a sweet turn from the experimentation she had been doing with her previous works Lover and Reputation. Most of the songs are soft and low key, but backed up with some of the most mature songwriting she’s ever done.

Sad, beautiful, tragic,” broke not only the barriers of Taylor’s release habits, which Taylor had been working on since her first album—releasing a single and announcing the album that would arrive months later—but also of her sound. Instead of announcing a pop album similar to the singer’s last three releases for 4 months from now, Swift announced a totally different album: a clever and inspiring mix of subtle and atmospheric pop, folk lyrics and alternative touch that gave a special tone in all tracks. In the end, Folklore will not only be known as Swift’s alternative/indie album, but also, as the curve point that made her move towards her best artistic phase.

In fact, both those who did not like Folklore, for saying that this is a very calm and boring album (what did they expect from a quarantine folk album after all?), and those who understand that this is one of the most important movements in Swift’s career, know that Folklore brings back what Taylor hadn’t shown in a while: her extremely detailed and well-written narrative lyrics. Folklore lyrics are inspiring, they are captivating, they make you feel every tear, every sadness and every loneliness. However, the album is not just a collection of the best compositions that Swift has released to date since the songs here only reach a level that Taylor has not reached for so long thanks to the production of Aaron Dessner, guitarist of The National, and, Taylor’s long date friend, Jack Antonoff. Together—not physically since the album was produced with each member in their own home—they made not only a beautiful and deep album, but also an exciting and atmospheric experience."

Jack, too, is present and accounted for on “Folklore,” to a slightly lesser extent, and together Antonoff and Dessner make for a surprisingly well-matched support-staff tag team. Swift’s collabs with the National’s MVP clearly set the tone for the project, with a lot of fingerpicking, real strings, mellow drum programming and Mellotrons. You can sense Antonoff, in the songs he did with Swift, working to meet the mood and style of what Dessner had done or would be doing with her, and bringing out his own lesser-known acoustic and lightly orchestrated side. As good of a mesh as the album is, though, it’s usually not too hard to figure out who worked on which song — Dessner’s contributions often feel like nearly neo-classical piano or guitar riffs that Swift toplined over, while Antonoff works a little more toward buttressing slightly more familiar sounding pop melodies of Swift’s, dressed up or down to meet the more somber-sounding occasion.

For some fans, it might take a couple of spins around the block with this very different model to become re-accustomed to how there’s still the same power under the hood here. And that’s really all Swift, whose genius for conversational melodies and knack for giving every chorus a telling new twist every time around remain unmistakable trademarks. Thematically, it’s a bit more of a hodgepodge than more clearly autobiographical albums like “Lover” and “Reputation” before it have been. Swift has always described her albums as being like diaries of a certain period of time, and a few songs here obviously fit that bill, as continuations of the newfound contentment she explored in the last album and a half. But there’s also a higher degree of fictionalization than perhaps she’s gone for in the past, including what she’s described as a trilogy of songs revolving around a high school love triangle. The fact that she refers to herself, by name, as “James” in the song “Betty” is a good indicator that not everything here is ripped from today’s headlines or diary entries.

Wow. I am simply blown away by Taylor Swift’s new album. When I heard yesterday that she was releasing a secret album, I had a hard time falling asleep last night, I was that excited. My expectations were certainly not disappointed. folklore is definitely her best album since Speak Now, and the third of her eight that I would give a 10 (no other artist even has two albums in that range). With folklore, Swift completely changes her style to something that might have come out if you mashed up her debut album with reputation, but with an overall quality that is comparable to Fearless and Speak Now. This new form of music is very fun to listen to, as it is unique to both her and the rest of pop. I guess that is kinda what I appreciated about it. Taylor Swift went back to having acoustic guitar (and piano!) based songs instead of electronically-produced music that was first experimented with in Red and then became her main style in 1989. It’s not that I don’t care for electronic music (it can be really good), but there is something really special about music that is made with real instruments, like the mind-blowing acoustic guitar riffs that can be heard in more than one of the songs in folklore. I wish I could give my song by song commentary but I can't because of the character limit. Overall, I was completely astounded by Taylor Swift’s eighth. Ever since 1989 came out, Taylor Swift’s music had been fun, but had never quite reached the heights of her first four albums for me. folklore is a complete game-changer, though. The score I give folklore is right up there with Swift’s best. No, Taylor Swift is not giving her crown away any time soon. She is one of my absolute favorite artists, and the effort she has put into making folklore another spectacular album only reinforces that. I highly recommend this album to all Taylor Swift fans as one of her best. I was scared that after Lover we would have to wait a long time for another release, but folklore is something better than what I could have imagined and it is really what we need right now during this worldwide crisis. Thank you, Taylor Swift! Highlights: the 1, cardigan, the last great american dynasty, exile, my tears ricochet, mirrorball, seven, august, illicit affairs, invisible string, mad woman, betty, and peace.

Taylor’s best album yet. The lyrics are her most personal and interesting in her career, and the production is so sleek and timeless. I’m still in disbelief. Mirrorball and August are career defining songs, and the album as a whole feels so articulate and cohesive.

It's a sharp turn to the left for Swift and a fine reminder that she is more than just a gleaming pop phenomenon, but a remarkable songwriter too. [Oct 2020, p.36]

A modern-folk masterpiece which finds her moving from her previous pop bangers into stunningly simple yet sharp melodies, ‘folklore’ will be going down in Swiftie history as one of her most unexpected, and undoubtedly one of her best.

These 16 tracks (17 on the deluxe version) play out quite pleasurably in their entirety, the joins between Swift, Dessner and Antonoff ultimately only of niche interest. But Swift’s powerful songs reach their climaxes with bittersweet orchestrations, rather than blows to the solar plexus or a ringing in the ears. Everything hovers; little truly lands.
