By far the best album I've heard this year. Along with System of a Down The Mars Volta are trying to completely reinvent physecadelic rock. The only real comparison I can make with them and any other bands is a mix of Rush and Pink Floyd. With a lot harder edge.

The Mars Volta prove once again why they are the best band since Led Zeppelin. Seventy-seven minutes of pure genius is what Frances the Mute is. The Mars Volta make ALL current bands seem like a poor joke--not to put down all the other bands out there, it's just that The Mars Volta are THAT good. No, scratch that, They are absolutely GREAT. Fortunately on frances tmv has you in jaw dropping state for a good 90% of the time (parts the widow and miranda that ghost just isnt holy anymore). 1)cygnus... vismund cygnus- rush anyone? the volta happen to blow their forefathers of prog rock away in this song that shiftshapes constantly, going from gentle acoustic to bits of zeppelin-esque riffs continuing to an amazing solo then bringing it all home. ends on some kind of annoying bits of noise that pertain to the story...which brings us to 2) the widow- this album sold as many copies as it did because mtv crowds liked the video for this. good thing they didnt listen to the music, not much here, some cool ambiance bixler is terrific as usual, but all together unenergized, they do this format alot better with asilos magdalena 3)l'via l'viaquez- l'via is the defining point of this album. if you manage too dislike this song you quite literally are rumppofsteelskin (p funk character who hates dancing). amazing beat, riff, vocals, everything is amazing. stellar song, definately one of the best volta tunes ever. 4)miranda that ghost just isnt holy anymore- another downhill slope, gradually calms everything down with bixlers mesmerizing singing then builds up to the finale with some really talented brass (i believe that includes rhcp's flea), that recalls infamous westerns and is damn near the instrumental highlight on the album 5) cassandra gemini- wow. if i created 30 mins of music this good i would probably be able to die happy on the spot. some slow patches where the song begins to run low on steam, but omar is able to pick up the pace and get everything top notch in preparation for a free jazz improvization section that makes gilmour and waters cry and blows echoes out of the water. ends on gentle acoustic section from the beginning, taking the song and forcing it out in a slow burn that never ceases to make me smile. i know i gave it a ten, but this is album is not perfect. there are flaws but if you are willing to sit through some electronic wanking and get to the good stuff the mars volta will reward you Expand

If the cd just went from song to song without stopping, i know that i would loose focus on the creativity and amazing work of art that i just heard. I was at first timid about the incredibly latin, L' Via, but after a second listen, it's such a contrast to anything else that the song separates the album from any main stream american album you or i have ever heard. I have a hard time breaking this cd into songs because i look at the album as one massive work. Trying to analyze individual parts of FTM is losing focus to what this album is about. TMV made FTM seamless for a reason, i believe that FTM is supposed to be viewed as a whole, no other way. I recently read a review that i liked very much in that, the band may fly from one end of the spectrum to the other, but there is one prime factor that keeps everybody together. Jon Theodore as a precussionist keeps everything together and easily keeps my attention througout the cd. This album stands shoulder to shoulder to De-Loused in the Comatorium (taking into account the fact that DitC is a literal masterpiece.) This would have been a 10, losing a half point only for the gratuitous soundscapes between songs and/or movements -- half of which actually do add to the album, but some, like the end of The Widow, are a bit tedious. That was a long sentence, but not longer than the songs on this album. However, when listening to FTM, it's less which track is playing and more which sound unfolds in your ear. This album is impossibly ambitious ... and The Mars Volta hold the reigns firmly. Doubtlessly, some unenlightened critics will toss pitchforks at the entire concept, likely dismissing FTM in flowery, pretentious quasi-wit, (see?) but they will be hopelessly off the mark. You'd do well to pay $8.99 for the track L`Via L`Viaquez alone -- the fattest arena-rock riffery since ... since nothing. The ghost of a Puerto Rican Led Zeppelin walks tonight. (It should be noted that Omar Rodriguez-Lopez busts out some seriously huge, Page-like soloing on this album. It's the only thing I was really, REALLY surprised to hear -- and after disgestion, it just adds to his sophomore-era legend.) For me, the tracks that left me in a Mars Volta-induced shell shock were L`Via and Cygnus and the others are still moving, but sprawled out over a much bigger canvas (save Widow). I've listened to this album exactly once now, so I'll refrain from bullshitting my way through a real introspective review, but I'll tell you that the other half point deduction was that my attention span doesn't allow to fall in love with 30 minutes songs, no matter how hard I try. I must have missed the boat on the whole 'brevity is awesome" thing, or the idea that every part of an album must be understood by the listener in the first five listens, OR the idea that soundscapes and instrumentals are inherently flawed. For those of us who don't see Modest Mouse and The Killers as the saviors of popular music, this album is one of the best examples of what we're looking for. Creative songs that don't always fit the radio friendly format, extremely talented musicians who aren't afraid to write something challenging and technical for fear of it being considered "self-absorbed," and yet the music retains it's emotion, something a lot of progressive rock loses in it's 128th note runs and poly-rythmic mayhem. Francis may be long winded, but it's worth hearing the whole thing. I understand the extended soundscape and instrumental sections won't appeal to everyone, but I believe they still add to the album, not detract. Much like Pink Floyd's albums, I view this as not a collection of awesome tracks, but as one whole 70+ minute piece of ass-kickery. Also, props to Flee on the trumpet work, which was one of the first things (first of many) that impressed me. Expand

This album is worth it for the first and last tracks alone. The Widow, while a little out of place, is excellent. Perhaps the spark for the M.V's brilliance can be found there. There's not denying the edge the Dynamic Duo of M.V. infuse into their art, and perhaps that's what leaves us yearning for more, even after one listening. In the wasteland of commercial and artistic mediocrity that has been popular culture, the year of our Lord 2005, the Mars Volta's sophomore effort is a sledgehammer to the senses, artful, engrossing, and never lacking in content and intellectual substance. The Pitchfork Media's verbose review misses the mark. Frances is the product of two of music's most over-active, and brilliant imaginations. It is a great leap forward from Deloused. The vocals are worlds better -- Bixler-Zavala actually sounds like he means what he's singing. The drumming also shows great improvement. The only bad thing about the album is the overlong instrumental sections, which were trimmed to the exact length they needed to be on Deloused, but now sprawl over upwards of 7 minutes.

And all of this is before the first verse even starts. To make a long story short, when the music on this album gets going, it's pure insanity.
