I've probably listened to 5+ Ty Segall albums simply because he's come up on some critic's list. And every time I've been disappointed. I just couldn't get it. I was done with Ty after Freedom's Goblin. This was it, my last attempt, I had done my due diligence and given him every chance possible. Just one listen and I finally get it. Maybe I have to revisit all those albums I didn't get.

Needless to say, don't sell Ty short. Give him the chance he deserves and you might be presently surprised.

Segall has been slowly but surely expanding out in various directions, exploring the possibilities of sounds and approaches to his songs and songwriting craft. Freedom’s Goblin makes the dividends of his exploration that have paid off all too evident.

Warbly vocalisms, impenetrably fuzz-encrusted guitar work, and boppin' elf grooves delightfully set the man apart from like-minded neo-hippies--alongside reverb avoidance and the occasional horns.

Freedom's Goblin has hooks and strong songwriting, and the quality is more consistent than Segall's norm. [No. 150, p.55]
