Georgia Gothic mixes the light and shade in equal measure and whilst it may wear its influences on its sleeve, the album deviates from an oft-ploughed furrow and takes things to new and interesting places with skill, guile, and heart.
  2. Mar 18, 2022
    80
At times brooding, at times impossibly bubbling with light joy, this is a release that highlight Mattiel’s musical abilities - easily able to drop one sound for another at a moment’s notice, and doing it all with absolute class.

The decision for Brown and collaborator Jonah Swiller to finally make a record together in the same room, after two remotely composed past releases, has largely paid dividends.
  4. Uncut

Wonky charmer of a third album. [Apr 2022, p.31]

While some listeners are bound to mourn the loss of Mattiel's most retro-minded garage qualities, these latter songs attain a stylistic sweet spot between their most accessible and rebellious material, while still -- refreshingly -- completely defying contemporary pop.

To produce songs that listeners want to stick on over and over again is the holy grail, of course, and although the whole album doesn’t manage to maintain this level, the highlights could stay with you for a considerable time.

You might struggle to identify where their influences end and begin, but Mattiel's charisma - and solid gold tunes, in the form of Lighthouse and the darkly gothic Blood In the yolk - ultimately win out. [Apr 2022, p.89]
