I've tried to complete a review for Goodnight Rhonda Lee several times now and have failed. I guess I've been trying too hard to convey how good I think it is. Nicole Atkins'' voice has always been a powerful instrument but here, with these songs, bathed in a rich, natural sounding production courtesy of Niles City Sound, it is quite electrifying. "My records are old friends I've trusted in them many times before" sings Nicole in 'Darkness Falls So Quiet.' I know what she means as Goodnight Rhonda Lee already feels like a trusted old friend. I was a little worried when Jersey Girl Nicole up and moved to Nashville. Silly me. Assembled here is 40 minutes of rustic soulful music and lyrics to combat the ugly orange menace blues of 2017 and beyond. Expand

Sets a high bar. But she clears it, with soulful, oddball, Jersey-girl-in-Nashville aplomb. [Sep 2017, p.96]

A little bit country, a whole lotta soul, from the dirty stomp of "Brokedown Luck" to the breezy pop of "Sleepwalking," a good deal of Goodnight Rhonda Lee would've been at home on '70s pop radio.

Amid soulful, R&B-indebted sounds married smoothly to the more country-leaning, Atkins has created her best and most resounding work yet.
