The clear influence of many artists is involved in this album. The project could have been a big deal IF they would've released it back in the 2000s.

Industry plant records more music written by a team of 40+ year old white men in a corner office at Geffen, intended to be basic enough to appeal to the masses but also be sad/emotional/angsty enough for preteen girls.

Olivia Rodrigo is a industry plant and it shows. The album got teased by herself and her team as more mature and grown up when in reality it is the same theme singing about boys now it is about a different one. Really good job so original. Heavily dissapointed. And the paid reviews by these outletts that are giving a 100 Score is a joke. One of the worst albums and most boring albums IOlivia Rodrigo is a industry plant and it shows. This is worse than sour... It sounds the same as her older songs and there is no artistic evolution. I expected more tbh. The lyricism is something a 13 year old would write and the production has some good parts but her voice and the production don’t fit to the rock/grunge influence.

I'm sure any young girl who loves her will disagree, but imo olivia is not worth the hype, at least not from a musical pov. artists like conan gray are doing a better job at creating something that is really a work of art, but maybe this is just a expression and doesn't aim to be good, timeless music. everyone has different tastes, this one was not for me, i really wished for better songwriting, "compliments like bullets on my skin" just isn't good enough for me.

The brilliance of this album cannot be overstated. We’re back in the 90s and 2000s and God do I love it. This is what pop albums used to sound like. But it’s not just nostalgic, wonderfully angsty pop-punk/pop-rock. It’s also folk (“lacy”) and New Wave (“pretty isn’t pretty”). You hear elements of Taylor, Avril, P!nk, early Katy, Sara Bareilles, Hole.

The metacritic reviews are overrated LOL. This is just a favourable album tho. But I should say the album is mainly influenced of Avril Lavigne, Paramore and Katy Perry (One of the Boys era). And I could agree that most songs in the album are SOUR's leftover. It's just her voice and lyrics that stand out.

First listen: I think I enjoyed SOUR better on its first listen. We'll see how it goes on subsequent listens.
Musically, I think this is more mature. Overall, lyrically there hasn't been much movement. OR has lots of room for growth and I look forward to it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a good sophomore album and she serve no lies. However, there are too many skip that literally not repeatable, as of now. I saw some samples from 1D, Avril, and even Girl in Red. She overused the way it starts from sad/soft to rock. I like teenage dream, all-american... and get him back! tho. I admit, she's somehow good in lyrics, track listing, and even choosing what will be singles, however, this is good but I feel like Sour is way more good and some sophomore like Happier Than Ever or Harry's album that bring marks to everyone. At the end, sad to say but I still see Taylor and Lana resemblance/inspired on this album. Lastly, why she always choose to be the victim in her songs, she always been betrayed, and too many toxic lyrics and hate. Why can't she just make songs from her heart?

In the other hand, this and Speak Now TV absolutely the frontrunner for the best music of 2023.

Olivia just got out of the the stage in life where you think you know everything and have it all under control, and got into the stage where you basically know nothing... that forced her to mature up and be more open towards fields she hasn't played in before.

The songwriting on this album is such a step up from Olivia's debut album, SOUR.
The honesty and rawness is impeccable, the small references to her past / general pop cloture references are so clever and perfectly and seamlessly inserted into the songs.
She smartened up, she studied and learned a lot, and it simply shows all over her new music, adding so many layers of emotions and creativity.
With that being said, there are a bit too many repetitions of lyrics in some songs, which seemed unnecessary and avoidable.

The production is great, but I wish there'd be more diversity, because some songs sounds a bit similar to each other.

'GUTS' is a great sophomore album by this very talented girl, feels like a big, cleverer sister to 'SOUR'.
    Key-word 'GROWTH'.

Favorite Tracks: 'vampire', 'ballad oh a homeschooled girl', 'making the bed', 'get him back!', 'teenage dream'.

Rodrigo is thinking about her age a lot in a few of these new songs, considering the precipice she’s on as teendom gives way to adulthood, without writing anything quite so cloying as a full-scale “not a girl, not yet a woman” anthem. “I know my age and I act like it,” she sings in the opening number, “All-American **** a rocker in which she embraces not-so-resting ****face, for **** ‘n’ giggles. The singer is being somewhat tongue-in-cheek in that irreverent opener, but she’s on to a big part of her appeal, to date: that a lot of her stuff has been flagrantly about being an adolescent, without trying to sound too seasoned before her time. The semi-self-effacing rudeness continues with “Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl” — which is certainly a contender for the ballsiest song title of the year, for starters. There’s no letdown in hearing the actual tune, a take on terminal social awkwardness that turns out to be virtually her tribute to Nirvana. (Here we are now, let us remain awkwardly in the kitchen at the party.)

i didn't like it tbh, too much voice filters and weird pop-rock. I found the ballads extremely weak. i preferred sour

I love this album more then Sour. So much less ballad heavy and is more fun. And I love the Pop/Punk or Pop/Rock throughout many of the songs.

OLIVIA RODRIGO'S BEST ALBUM.Sour surprised everyone, being a charming project full of very good songs, but Guts surpasses itself in every way, having spectacular songs and a very good order. I love u Liv.

Generally a good sophomore album from Olivia, she continues to show her growth in her sound and dabbling into new genres. However, some of the rock influences sound repetitive throughout the album, which could have been done better. My favourites are making the bed, the grudge, and teenage dream.

First listen - I was not sure, but now that I've been through the album 5 times, I love it. I wanna dance and sing. She knows how to express how it feels to be a girl in her twenties. Amazing lyrics.

Genuinely really loved this album, shows a lot of growth for her, and I’m loving some of the new sounds she has taken on too!

Definitely meant for 19 year olds. All of the songs sound like they would fit on Sour.

It's just incredible how she did this album, is perfect for this generation and very funny and reminds me of a movie from 2000.

This is AMAZING! She did it again! The complexity of some lyrics are stellar and the fun is so good! She’s unhinged and i’m here for it!

A strong follow-up to Sour. It has pretty great production value, a crisp, dynamic sound and Olivia is such a talented songwriter, lots of catchy songs while still perfectly conveying different emotions through them.

Honestly this was pretty good, not every song tho. Best songs were lacy vampire making the bed and the second single

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. FIRST LISTEN: I think I prefer the first listen of SOUR. I'll know it on a later listen.
Musically, I think the song is more mature. Overall, lyrically it hasn't changed much. or There's a lot of room to grow and I'm looking forward to it.

“Teenage Dream” recycles a song title of Katy Perry’s and echoes a twisty-turny melody of Lana Del Rey’s. Yet Rodrigo’s emotional presence is so strong throughout “Guts” — so believable even at its most unrelatable — that you never lose the sense of a specific young person navigating a trial of her own making.

GUTS is emphatic proof that Rodrigo isn't just good for a kid -- she's grown into an artist with plenty of things to say, and the confidence and eloquence to say them her way.

These songs show that Rodrigo isn’t done after GUTS.
