An album so poorly produced it is in parts physically painful to listen to. The melding of country/folk and electronic r and b does not work on any level. Timberlake vocals are still good though, and his lyrics are Ok, but the production makes this album unlistenable.

Not a very enjoyable album. I've listened to it all the way through a few times, trying to give it a fair chance, but nothing sticks. The energy of his previous efforts just doesn't seem to be there, nor are any of the usual catchy hooks or dance-ability. We're left with a limp album that doesn't even make much effort to be topical.

This album is super weird. Did he listen to these songs? Is he just **** around making stuff only he likes? The production is weird.

Mostly the songs are just not good. I wouldn't say they're bad, just boring and uninspired. I expect hooks from Justin Timberlake. This had none. Lyrics were meh. Just stunning. No wonder they're giving away tickets to his tour everywhere.

I get that JT was attempting to blend electro pop and Americana, but, IMO, Pharrell and Timbaland's production don't serve the songs and the songs themselves lack any pop hooks, lyrics, or vocal performances that are memorable. I would enjoy the title track more if he didn't rip off the guitar groove from "Walk On The Wild Side" by Lou Reed. Aside from those, the album is a fair disappointment. After the "The 20/20 Experience" era (which is a record I still blast full-on to this day), I never expected Justin Timberlake to make a mediocre record, but I was proven wrong. The modern pop spin on country/rock-inspired songs JT opted for works for some songs (I particularly like 'Sauce'), but feels kinda forced, and out-of-place on a lot of the other tracks of the album. The writing is basic, even a little cheap-ish here and there. Some songs are just straight-on awful (I can't stand 'Montana', the title track isn't exactly my idea of a good song, and the closer 'Young Man', intended as an ode to his son, turns out to be extremely annoying), while others start off really well but degrade as they progress ('Wave' is amazing and all, until the chorus comes in.. WHAT HAPPENED?). The collaborations are decent, but they don't, in any way, match the expectations I had about them (I honestly expected 'Say Something' with Chris Stapleton to be a much harder-hitting song). The good songs on there, for me, are 'Filthy' (which, by the way, doesn't fit the mood nor the sound of the whole thing.. strange thing for a lead single, right?), 'Sauce', 'Supplies', 'Flannel', 'Livin' Off the Land', and 'The Hard Stuff' (even though some lines in that last one still made me cringe).

In conclusion, "Man of the Woods" is, without any doubt, a disappointment: overly-long, lacking lots of depth, and flying all over the place. Maybe JT should drop The Neptunes, and get back in the studio with Timbaland to bring sexy back?

One of the worst albums I've ever heard. I'm not sure why people think he's talented. Songs like "Filthy" are exactly that (ugly, awful, etc.) and "Supplies" might have the most annoying chorus since "Umbrella." The only half-listenable track on this album is "Montana," which is still pretty mediocre. (P.S. If you want a laugh, check out the video for "Supplies." It's gold.)

This long in show business and still pulls 300-350k plus amazing SBHT coming will give him more boost. Really recommend this album to everyone who likes Justin’s previous works but this time with a twist. He is not for fame and commercial success anymore and he proves it on this album. He has nothing to prove after 22 years. He is happy singer, artist, actor, husband and father! Jessica and Silas both of them are part of this powerful and full of happiness project for his family and faithful fans of his music. He is not faking nor pretending that what makes this album even valuable to anyone who respects his work and doesn’t remember this Janet's incident. She has move on but her fans and BlackTwitter only remember this and punishing him for her own mistake of her try hard way to overshade Madonna’s and Britney’s scandalous kiss at VMA 2003. Didn’t work out. But easier is to blame young guy who started his career just after he left his boy band. Janet should go to TV and apologies and at least explain what really happened there not hiding! She is guilty of her own moves and people need to understand. Justin never wanted do anything against her. This show was only her own choice and decision. Justin even apologised for this at least once and he is alright with it. His music is better than ever. However, some of the tracks just did not work with this body of work (maybe on another album). I just kept thinking, "What is the point of this song when the sound is nothing like the others?"

Don't get me wrong, I do not mind if an album is not sonically cohesive. But with this album, some tracks were just in their own world separate from the other tracks, not having any similarities to the others.

However, I did enjoy the majority of this album. Good job Justin Timberlake on attempting to combine Americana and funk/pop/r&b.

The 20/20 Experience was a pretty enjoyable experience for almost all the record, and now we got songs that probably would fit into a commercial or in a background to a commercial; it's shallow, it feels more long that it really and, again, it's 66 of loose and adrift ideas. There are highlights but most of the songs overshadow these few.

Justin has always marched to the beat of his own drum musically and the results are always better for it. Once again, going against the radio grain. He's in top form on this record. Midnight Summer Jam probably does this the most effectively, when the harmonica kicks in. He actually delivers 2 albums by using the duets with Alicia Keys & Chris Stapleton to separate the groovy and rustic moods on the album but magically blend them seamlessly. There's also a beautifully haunting presence of Jessica Biel throughout this record, which by Track 16, is more telling about the effect marriage and fatherhood has had on Justin's personal growth than any single love song could convey.

fantastic album, no idea why critics don't like it. Breeze, Midnight Summer Jam, Montana, Higher Higher are some of his best songs.

Nothing special to be heard here honestly: JT seems to have left behind the trademark sound him and Timbaland developed and refined on his past projects, instead he tries to merge trap influenced pop music with a lot of country. The problem however is not him trying something new, its simply that it sounds.. mostly boring: The beats are mostly very straight forward and get repetitive over time, and JT's voice sounds too clean to make most of the country cuts interesting enough for a revisit. Even the melodies do not stick out nearly as much as on past projects. JT occasionally does tripplet flows and throws in some adlibs on this one, which I don't think fit well with the musical direction he is taking (e.g. Midnight Summer Jam.. literally could put Future in the beginning part). Overall super underwhelming, there's almost nothing to keep me hooked here. Expand

It’s really bad! a failed and sad attempt for a futuristic sound by JT. Wasted a full hour on this album I’m so mad.

bomba sonora. uma mistura de sons completamente confusa e incoerente. Justin deveria ter pensado melhor antes de lançar isso. até porque até o presente momento ele tinha uma boa reputação.

This album must be one of the worst this year even if it just started. I am hugely disappointed and I was very excited for this record. Expand

Way too convoluted and not interesting enough. You can skip this, you aren't missing much except a cluster of clashing sounds and corny lyrics. Shame.

Terrible album. Most of the songs either feel empty, hollow, shallow or the sound just don't really work.

Yet another amazing album by Timberlake, his first in over 4 years and he still delivers. The album is really solid and there are no skips. The highlights of this album are definitely Breeze Off The Pond and Morning Light with Alicia Keys.

Perfeito!

Although he’s not really mixing musical genres as originally promised, he’s mixing up some music and lyrics that shouldn’t really go together, which makes this one crazy peanut butter cup of an album.

Man of the Woods is not an outright disaster but it is a significant disappointment--a record too preoccupied with image, volte face and forced “REAL” to fully engage as a coherent piece of craftsmanship.

Throughout, Man Of The Woods seesaws brilliantly between pop and country. [Apr 2018, p.116]
