The songwriting is at least as good as on her previous album 'Honest Life', but the production is much bolder and more assertive, giving the record a rather epic feel. I absolutely love it.

CMA has been writing great songs and singing them beautifully for years, since she was a precociously talented teenager (though she has disowned her first three albums and they are hard to track down). Sixth album Honest Life was a well deserved breakthrough, but this is a leap forward in terms of both songwriting and singing. Great support from her band and producer Mark Howard. Expand

Andrews' ability to write seemingly simple songs that contain deep levels of ambiguity combined with her superb vocal talents make her a special artist.

Kindness sees Andrews play the traditional diva, brilliantly so on the swelling, epic title track. Elsewhere, shadowed by atmospheric tremolo guitar and elements of Memphian soul, Andrews injects Americana archetypes with tenderness and empathy. [Jun 2018, p.96]

Andrews’ band is first rate, particularly organist Daniel Walker, whose weedy, wavering hum imbues these songs with a mournful depth of field. ... What’s new, here, however, is how damned strong she is, how fierce a belter, how indomitable a chronicler of the middle-class struggle.
