Tame Impala is enough popular to hoard the spotlight of their cousins Pond and GUM, but Jay Watson fights for his own light and, between being in Tame Impala and Pond, he takes care and feeds his project, GUM, with everything learned in his path. GUM is the one that I know the less of the tree, but I knew about his existence, and I wanted to have a moment of closeness, and, to be honest, he is nice. Of course, it's not Tame Impala, but with "Out In The World", Watson proclaims to be part of the family as the most intimate and mysterious one. There is authenticity in the album, but it is also felt that it comes from a very similar place as Tame Impala. Produced by himself, this album is a kind, interesting, entertaining, and sensible journey that promises to complement an Indie Psychedelic Rock of which we still need more. If Kevin Parker is the soul of the party, Watson is in the attic making love.

It sounds like it could be a mixed bag, but Out in the World has a definite flow—and at no point does it become repetitive.

With the closing “You Make Your Own Luck,” Watson effectively distills GUM’s whole essence into a two-part mini-suite: one half nocturnal cosmic ballad, one half sunrise-summoning soul-jazz groove, the song reaffirms Watson’s ongoing mission to find the elation in isolation.

It’s as though Jay is playfully toying around with genres without building a fully cohesive record. There are plenty of lovely moments on this LP, but without a clear structure it never truly acts as one.
