Pleasureland is an unexpected turn for McCallum, but an interesting exercise in autonomy and expectations. The result is a slight 27 minutes that manages to contain worlds—of emotion, texture, and feeling. No words needed.

There is palpable pleasure--for both McCallum and her listeners--as she shrugs off her old identity and, in losing her voice, goes in search of herself.

There is an easy grace to the material. Even the shrillest cuts, such as "Syrup" that features a distorted, dirty, electric guitar line, are subdued because they were recorded with silence as an essential feature of the song. The result is evocative in the same way that one's own bodily noises like a heartbeat and breathing can seem so loud in a soundless place.

Filmic instrumentals ranging in mood from Badalamenti oddness to bright piano etudes and reflective gloom. [Nov 2018, p.96]
