This album is ok. It's not as good compared to the other p!atd albums they've put out, because of bad wordplay and somewhat generic pop elements. The songs are catchy and the brass is a very nice addition, but I think Brendon could have used a bit more creativity. There are some exceptions, however, such as Roaring 20s and Dying In LA. Other than that, the album is only okay, not great.

This is a good album, but that's all it is. There's nothing incredibly bad, but nothing incredibly good either. Nothing stood out, for good or bad. It was all just 'good'.

Brendon Urie wrote this album while he was doing Kinky Boots and the album has all the Broadway sound. It has bittersweet lyrics, a mixed sound between 1920 and 2018. It's just perfect.

Brendon Urie's amazing. I didn't think he'd be able to out due Death of A Bachelor but low and behold. This guy's on fire. Favorites: Silver Lining, Hey Look Ma, Dancing's Not A Crime, and Old Fashioned. Don't miss Dying In LA either. Hear this thing.

At first listen, I didn't enjoy it that much. I was like meh, a usual P!ATD album. It's definitely a grower album. High Hopes is THAT song, the production at the first and second verses alone deserve the 8 I gave. I'm glad to see the song reaching #6 in US. Its their highest charted song there yet.

Whilst the songs may be fun and great to dance to, Urie manages to convey the struggles that he may have endured earlier in life. The lyrial content are some of the strongest that ever been written from this artist. The songs in this album are very strong and makes this album very cohesive. This album is the perfect successor to Death Of A Bachelor.

And as a bonus to the amazing instrumentals, he has some intriguing and genius double-sided one-liners in every song. The lyrical work isn’t his best, but it really doesn’t show. The music is too swallowing to notice. It’s a magical experience.

I don't like the heavy pop feeling you get when you listen to it. But it is definitely one of his best albums. I just can't see how this album "connects" to Brendon, is just something I've never seen before in his music. I was hoping for more punk and rock and basically got the opposite. This is Panic! At The Disco, but I have to admit this is probably the weakest release under the name. The songs all sound (mostly) the same and there really is nothing unique about this album. Despite having catchy tunes, this is not “Death of a Bachelor” quality as we should now expect. Over all, I think Pray For The Wicked is meh.

While "High Hopes" and "Say Amen (Saturday Night)" have been more prominently in the limelight, there is not a single song on this album that is less than what we have come to expect from Urie's powerful vocals and songwriting. The diversity between tracks displays many different aspects of music, and the heavy influence of strings and brass instruments add a certain class to the music that many of his previous albums have not contained. My only qualm is that most of his songs are about similar topics and have the same bone structure, but all in all, this is, in my opinion, Urie's culminating and best album. Expand

I was looking forward to this Panic album for a while, so you can imagine my disappointment when I heard this pop/trap/electro swing(?) album instead. It's not a bad album by any means, but it's not great either. I'm all for artists changing up their style with every release, heck it's what this band is known for, but this just sounds like a watered down version of their last release.

As day one fan since 2005, I am utterly disappointed.
It seems Brendon Urie has finally reached a level of success where the only thing he knows how to write about is how successful he's become, how he's still unfulfilled despite his decadent LA lifestyle, and how no amount of drinking can fix that but **** it let's do it anyway. And all but two tracks sound like the standard Top 40 white noise you hear on the radio. Any traces of their emo roots have been thoroughly bleached out in favor of overproduced pop numbers with a very misutilized horn section.
I am glad for Brendon's success. After all these years, he deserves it. But it came at the cost of completely losing touch with why fans loved his music in the first place (I have to wonder if Death of a Bachelor would have been just as tepid without the influence of Rivers Cuomo). I suppose this is the inevitable progression for someone in his position, but in regards to quality, maybe he would have been better off taking a cue from My Chemical Romance and dissolving the band when his musical style had evolved past its usefulness.
Other negative reviews have better broken down what is wrong from a technical standpoint and I wholeheartedly concur. I had high hopes for my favorite band, and I was praying for a good release, but it turns out Panic! is one fever I /can/ sweat out. It just took 13 years.

I would say that their best album is probably Pretty Odd, because to some extent it lives up to its title, especially considering how much it deviated from Fever. Vices had great instrumentation but kind of poor lyrics. Too Weird To Live and Death of a Bachelor have both been fun, but are lacking that real tangible depth - yet I still find myself coming back to quite a few of the songs off of them. However, after the departure of a high amount of members and resulting in Brendon Urie effectively becoming Panic! at the Disco, a very clear new sound was emerging, seeds of which were sown into Bachelor. I feel this has now cultivated in Pray For The Wicked, Panic!'s sixth album that almost completely abandons Panic!'s roots and essentially makes a Brendon Urie pop album. I don't necessarily think that this is a bad thing - pop albums can be good, given it has a heart. However, I just don't feel there's a whole lot of heart to any aspect of Pray For The Wicked.

To start with the positives, songs are typically catchy. Brendon is always such a performer, and some songs like Say Amen, King of the Clouds, The Overpass and **** A) Silver Lining have a good sense of grandeur without sacrificing heart. However, it's this seeming emphasis on grandeur and bombastic sounding production that is to the album's detriment, likely a result of Brendon's time in Broadway. Though they may sound like they're out of a musical, they might be out of an average musical.

Some songs made my face actually sort of scrunch up, considering what the hell I was listening to in the context of a band that had built themselves off of punk pop rock and at least instrumentation. 2018's trapscape seeps even into this album, and some of the performances here are semi-questionable.

Pray For The Wicked is not necessarily bad. It's just painfully average and just lacks any real heart to it. It feels hollow. An album that seems to try to please everyone seems to ultimately please no one.

The album is great, but i thought the song dying in LA just does not match with the other ones, neither with the concept of the album because the album creates a really happy and intense scenario, as we always expect from panic! at the disco, but then it all breaks with this sad song, so this was kind of senseless.

When you listen to the actual album, you realize very quickly how rushed this was. Songs like Hey Look Ma, I Made It are a poor execution of mixing electronic with swing and jazz and while its okay, one of the better songs, that's really not saying much. Everything else is rushed, underproduced, undermixed, garbage. So many of Brendan's vocals sound strained, forced, something that could've easily been fixed with another take or some editing, but instead it sounds like he was thrown into the booth with no warmups and told to just go for it. Songs like Silver Linings, it sounds like he's run out of breathe on the chorus and is trying desperately to catch it. It even sounds like he's bouncing around in the booth while recording. Roaring 20's has the most annoying trumpet throughout half the track that is unbearable even without headphones on. There's a lot of points where Brendon's vocals are much quieter than the instrumentals, which again, could easily be fixed with a little time during editing and mixing. This album had to pass through all the producers, Brendon and his bandmates, all that, and they all went, yeah that's perfect, that's what we want. The only excuse i can find for this is his producers wanted to get back at him or something. There is no excuse for how poor this record is. And I'm leaving out so much, like when he tries to hit those high notes it sounds like he's just waken up, it sounds strained, not human, not good. There is nothing good about this record. If, for some odd reason, you expected this to be anything but a continuation of what we heard on Death of a Bachelor two years ago, you'll be sorely disappointed. There aren't any pop-punk, and emo sounds on this record - and I'd bet a substantial amount of money we won't be hearing anything close to that from Panic! ever again. This is a pop album through and through, though that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Urie, as a solo artist in all but name, has taken a page from his stint on Broadway and crafted a highly theatrical album with Pray for the Wicked. With big booming choruses and hip hop influenced instrumentals, this album oft times seems to drown - if slightly - in it's own grandeur. At points, it feels a bit overproduced, going so far as to drown out one of the biggest strengths of Panic! since it's inception - Urie's voice.

It's catchy and sing-songy. The songs will likely get stuck in your head after a few listens. The choruses beg to be sung along with a big crowd during a live show. Though mostly shallow - devoid of any real tangible impact (socially or emotionally) - I can't say that it's not damn entertaining. To be frank, I think we're well past the point of expecting a thought provoking work of consciousness that holds any real meaning from Panic! (if we ever should have to begin with). Instead, we should ask ourselves: was it at least fun? And to that end, I can say, yes.

Sounds like b-sides to the newest Fall Out Boy album , which is a bad thing. Not much creativity, lots of cheesy lyrics , and very little real instrumentation. Death of A Bachelor was tolerable, this isn’t by miles. Bands can grow, all for it, but this isn’t growth when you drop most of your band and start using hip hop beats the entire album.

Brenden has utterly and completely fallen in love with himself, overbearing almost every song with his incredible vocal talents. He adds 2 to 3 times more notes than are needed and it just comes off as superficial and annoying. The lyrics in particular are shallow and completely lacking any depth or personality. We came from:

"This is gospel for the vagabonds,
    Ne’er-do-wells, insufferable bastards
    Confessing their apostasies
    Led away by imperfect impostors"

    To:

"This is my roaring, roaring 20s, I don't
Even know me, roll me like a blunt, cause I wanna go home"

This downgrade may have worked for Taylor Swift, but for Brenden, the standard is simply just higher. It's like he decided to make a horn-blaring, content-light commercial album meant to cash in on the, "We are the depraved and reckless party-kids generation" and left behind all substance. The closest he comes is the last song, "Dying in LA", but even then manages to over-sing it and not just trust the lyrics and music itself. And again, it's not due to a lack of talent; On the contrary, it's due to someone who has had the world at his feet for so long that he thinks his voice alone is more important than every other element of a song.

"Say Amen" is fun and "High Hopes" is by far the best song, but the bright spots get drowned out by the hundreds of horns, samples, and empty-calorie lyrics from the rest of the album. I desperately await Panic and Brenden's return to honest, vulnerable, and soulful music written from the heart, and not a quick cash grab.

Pray For The Wicked is the newest album from the very popular Alt-rock one-man band Panic! At The Disco. It’s already a highly successful album. It reached the number 1 spot on the Billboard 200, and now sits at number 39, twenty weeks after it’s debut. The hits so far are “Say Amen” and “High Hopes,” both of which I’ve heard on Alt-radio several times. It reached the number 1 spot on the Billboard 200, and now sits at number 39, twenty weeks after it’s debut. The hits so far are “Say Amen” and “High Hopes,” both of which I’ve heard on Alt-radio several times. Pray For The Wicked is Panic’s craziest, most overdone and overstuffed album yet, and it’s only 34 minutes long. The album is highly inspired by Broadway, like Pretty. Odd, but much noisier and crazier, minus the slow closing song “Dying in LA.” The album is mostly dominated by real, huge instruments; trumpet, piano, and anything that emulates the sounds of Broadway. Modern elements are thrown in a few songs, like the high-pitched electronic voice on “Amen.” Something similar can be heard during the chorus of “Dancing.” The lyrics are as overblown as they could be, reaching for the stars, full of Broadway-level ambition and charisma.

To demonstrate the quality of this record, I would like to break down one of it’s songs; “Old Fashioned.” The song opens with some very cringey lyrics, and an awkward vocal performance by Urie. The chorus is huge, epic, and awesome, with a great-sounding performance by Urie. The second verse is slightly better than the first, but still cringey. The bridge is ridiculous and stupid, with Urie saying “boozy boozy” over and over again. Urie brings in a corny children’s choir for the final chorus. The mish-mash quality of “Old Fashioned” serves as a fairly accurate picture of the quality of the whole album. Some of it sounds really great, and some of it is straight-up hard to listen to. There are a few exceptions to this generalization. I love “Silver Lining,” “Hey Look Ma, I Made It,” and “Dancing.” The energy of these songs is fantastic, and the Broadway music hits all the right notes. “High Hopes,” “King of the Clouds,” and “LA” don’t have any unlistenable music, but are nearly as successful as the previously mentioned songs I really liked. “Say Amen” has pretty great music, but some pretty bad blasphemous lyrics that personally keep me from liking the song. The worst song on here is “The Overpass,” but it still has some really cool elements (the Mission Impossible-esque opening music).

Panic’s newest album is commendable for it’s attempted style and nearly endless ambition, but the execution enough to really hurt the album. There is some great stuff on PFTW, but some real trash.

I was really optimistic about this album, especially after hearing Say Amen(Saturday Night) but I was very disappointed. There are more songs that I hate than like overall. It feels way too repetitive and gets very tedious after a few listens.

I've been a Panic! fan for two and a half years now, and as someone who prefers the pre-split material (A Fever You Can't Sweat Out and Pretty Odd) I wasn't exactly excited or hyped for this album, though I was intrigued as to what would it would sound like. At first I was fairly optimistic, as I didn't mind the first two singles (Silver Lining and Say Amen). When the album was releasedI've been a Panic! fan for two and a half years now, and as someone who prefers the pre-split material (A Fever You Can't Sweat Out and Pretty Odd) I wasn't exactly excited or hyped for this album, though I was intrigued as to what would it would sound like. At first I was fairly optimistic, as I didn't mind the first two singles (Silver Lining and Say Amen). When the album was released however, I was rather disappointed. The songs all seem the same, following the same themes of 'started from the bottom now I'm here', 'even though I'm famous my life still sucks', and 'yes I smoke weed and drink wow I'm so cool'. The songs are all very much in your face and out there, and very poppy apart from Dying In LA, which I take as the obligatory mediocre sad song to close out the album. The reason I have put this as mixed rather than negative is because I LOVE the song 'The Overpass', and the songs overall aren't too bad to listen to, they're just very shallow and don't at all connect emotionally.

The review I made on it after my first listen says a bit about it too:
Panic! At The Disco (or should i more accurately say, Brendon Urie)'s sixth studio effort is filled with sparkling horns, strings, drum machines, and catchy pop beats. Each song is on average just scraping three minutes, with choruses big and bold though lacking individuality. Each is repetitive in structure and features the name of the song sung a couple of times along with other cut and paste lyrics, for almost all tracks on the album. If you enjoy loud large pop songs, this album is most definitely for you. If you crave originality and songs without copied and pasted choruses chucked in throughout, you might want to look past this one. Overall, for those who like newer Panic! this album should suit you nicely. Fans of older Panic! will want to stay well clear unless they are especially open minded.

In all seriousness, this album doesn't even deserve a 1. All of his previous music is amazing, not only is it cynical in the perfect way, it was also a way of restoring your faith in the human populous. But this latest album is a massive black blot on a clean canvas. This album is so pop-y that it hurts my f***ing ears. The fact that High Hopes is counted as one of Panic!'s classics alongside Nine in the Afternoon, This is Gospel, Death of a Bachelor, and I Write Sins not Tragedies is utterly disgraceful. Panic!'s previous songs were beautifully written not only to sound good, but to convey a meaningful message. (By the way, High Hopes is literally lying, listen to it closely.) (F*** a) Silver Lining: This song gets old after listening to it twice. i have dozens of hours on A Fever You Can't Sweat Out. The reason why is because not only are all of the songs meaningful, they also sound bloody amazing. Songs need to be good enough to make you wanna hear them again, that's why artists like Trevor Something are so successful. Silver Lining is one of the only not-utterly-and-completely-abysmal songs in this album, and I can't stand hearing it more than twice a week. I hate hearing this song blasted on every pop radio station. As for the message, it's literally just about seeing the good in life,, how basic can you get? Say Amen (Saturday Night). The second best song due to it having a meaning and not sounding like s*** The song sounds fine, that's it. As for the meaning, it's a reflection on his mormon roots, it wasn't executed the best, but I'll take anything from this s*** album. Hey Look Ma, I Made It is abysmal. It's about what four other f***ing songs in this album are about and it sounds horrible. I do understand that there is an underlying message, that being corruption in the music industry, but their first song was about this and it was about four hundred times better. Roaring 20's: This song is just filled with missed potential. The lyrics are about Brendon's broadway experience, which is fine. I just think that the lyrics are dull and repetitive. I don't think people realize the potnetial Brendon Urie had when it comes to emulating the music of the 20's, the instruments and singing tone. This is only ever touched on in There's a Good Reason These Tables Are Numbered Honey, You Just Haven't Thought of it Yet and Crazy=Genius, two of my favourite songs by Panic!. But this is just a disappointment, the only exceptional thing about this is it's intro music. Dancing's not a Crime is a crime, this song is so bad it made me tear my own liver out. The music behind it is f***ing aids, it sound's like if Alvin and the Chipmunks tried beat-boxing. The lyrics are as basic b**** as it gets and the song's meaning it useless. Something Giorno Giovanna would not appreciate. One of the Drunks: Did anyone actually listen to this song? In case you didn't, all I'm gonna say is the same things I've been saying this whole review. It's boring, repetitive and meaningless. King of the Clouds: Just sounds like something you'd hear on the local pop station. Not special at all. The Overpass: The same as King of the Clouds. Old Fashioned: Again. this is like the EVOLVE (by Shinedown) of this album, I think I've heard it once. It is just bad though, bad and unimportant.. Dying in LA is what gave me hope, this is the Impossible Year of this album, but instead of being basically forgotten about, it's the only thing that you don't forget besides the fact that you can tell your mates about an album that almost gave you a cerebral hemorrhage Joseph Stalin style. This song actually sounds fine, and has something called, say it with me: Metaphor. Y'know, one of those things that making conversation and speaking actually interesting. This song is about the over-hyping of LA, which is actually an interesting topic! The song altogether, is fine, definitely the best of the album. High Hopes: I saved this one for last because of how much I despise it. The song is about the same thing as Hey look Ma, I Made it. Brendon's rise to stardom. But the way it's told makes it sound like he just recently hit it off, I'm pretty sure that 12-11 years ago wasn't all that recent. Also, "I've always had High High Hopes for the living." Then what is I Constantly Thank God for Estaban about, or Ballad of the Mona Lisa, or Build God Then We'll Talk? All of those songs and many many more are about how much humanity f***ing sucks and the stupid s*** that they do. It's also way to over-exposed. And it sounds terrible. The end. I hear supporters of this album say three things: Panic! is better at this kind of music, I've been waiting for this for so long, and change is a good thing. 1. They're not better at this kind of music, 2. Then go listen to some Taylor Swift, Fall Out Boy or Shawn Mendez. 3. Change is good if it works. Expand

Panic! at the Disco is on the verge of peaking and the funny thing is it's not even Panic anymore It's Brendon! at the Disco and it's good. Real good. Between DOAB and Pray For the Wicked Brendon has revitalised his career.
Hey Look Ma, I Made It, High Hopes and One of the Drunk are outstanding. The only song I didn't enjoy was Silver Lining. Over all this is a great album.

Pray for the Wicked left an overall positive impression even though it wasn’t quite as consistently good as other Panic! At The Disco albums. I loved how creative this album was (at times a little too much so) with the synth horns and strings, which added a ton to the songs they were used well in. It was very fun to track along with this musical theme, especially since it borrows from the band’s previous albums like Death of a Bachelor. I feel like some of the songs could have been better though if there were less repetitive lyrics. However, the music is (for the most part) more than good enough to make up for any lyrical laziness.

The album begins with Silver Lining, which was delightfully upbeat and had amazing music. The song was repetitive to the point where it took away from it’s quality, however. I had an issue with Say Amen’s vocal effects, though its chorus music and lyrics were solid. Its bridge was reminiscent of the band’s older stuff with the piano and the strings and I thought that the horns were a great choice for the song. Hey Look Ma, I Made It had an awesome dirty e-guitar that started the song off wonderfully. I enjoyed its lyrical theme, fun horns, and cool music breaks. High Hopes was the only song I had heard before listening to the entire album, so I knew I loved it going in. The upbeat horns made the song, and combined with delightfully catchy lyrics, wonderful backing vocals, and an awesome synergy, it’s no wonder why this song was the success it is. Roaring 20s was fun to listen to because of all the brilliant tempo changes. Like the rest of the album, it was nice and upbeat with great lyrics, and its organ/piano duo made a great team. Dancing’s Not a Crime is probably my second favorite after High Hopes. Its synths sounded great and I loved the air of confidence the song gives off (not unlike High Hopes). I could have done without the high vocal effect, but I didn’t mind a ton. There was a lot going on in this track but somehow this song manages to juggle everything. Groovy bass and lovely strings were other highlights. One of the Drunks was a little bit of a misfire in my opinion. The vocal effects were a little much and it felt like there was too much going on throughout. I had mixed opinions about the lyrics: some were good but I couldn’t say the same for some others. The end bit was unnecessary. The Overpass was a little messy but enjoyable. It had a cool intro, a great drumbeat, and an epic bassline. The panning was also really awesome. The bridge transition messed with me, along with the offbeat voice clip. King of the Clouds had some great harmony vocals and I loved the pattern of the bass/kick drum. I wish the post-chorus music was better, however. The drums were a little electronic for me in Old Fashioned, which is ironic given the song title. The acoustic guitar and the sound of the chorus were awesome though. The melody at some parts with the corresponding music didn’t agree with me, and neither did the repetitive bridge. If all of the song sounded like the chorus, this would have easily been a winner. The piano (and beautiful strings) was refreshing in Dying in LA and this song had really good and powerful lyrics.

Overall, I was reasonably happy with Panic! At The Disco’s most recent album, even if it wasn’t quite as good as previous efforts. Brendan Urie’s voice, strong lyrics (when they’re not repetitive), and outstanding creativity are highlights of Pray for the Wicked. Perhaps this album would have been better if it was more consistent, since sometimes the verses are amazing but not the chorus, and vice versa. That being said, this album certainly has its moments. I hope that Panic! comes out with another album soon, but until then I will have a blast listening to some of the standouts from Pray for the Wicked. Highlights: Hey Look Ma, I Made It; High Hopes, Roaring 20s, Dancing’s Not a Crime, and Dying in LA.

I liked this album. It is very fun and makes you want to dance. A lot of new sounds are explored, making for an interesting listening experience. There are quite a few gems on this album, and hardy any duds (though even the "bad songs" are still okay). Sometimes I miss the guitars, but I can't be too mad. Interested to see where they go next. Brendon offers (as always) impressive vocals, catchy hooks and a mix of deep and satirical lyrics. One of the things fans have criticized about this album is the lyrics. Many take it just as "Hey i'm famous and drunk but still depressed", when the lyrics in my opinion are satirical. Just listen to "F*** A Silver Lining".

Another thing fans dislike, is the fact that "Pray For The Wicked" is very different from their (or should i say his) former albums ("Pretty.Odd" and "A Fever You Can Sweat Out"). Critics say they have moved from their roots in punk-rock to mainstream pop/Broadway/jazz/trap. Yes, Panic have changed, but that change isn't a bad thing in my opinion, but I get that some people might feel different.

PFTW's five first songs are deferently the best. While "KIng Of The Clouds" is a bop, "The Overpass", "Dancing's Not A Crime", "Old Fashioned" and "One Of The Drunks" are the weaker elements of the albums. They're all still a blast, but they can't compete with the albums first couple of tracks. "Dying In LA" is okay, and is powerful performed live, but the closing song feels a tiny bit out of place for me.

Brendon's vocals are still distinctive and very audible with incredible high notes ("Say Amen") throughout the album. In other words Panic! At the Disco is back and bigger than ever.

His creativity goes through the roof, not only instrumental wise, but lyrically too. Is it a patd album without unique song titles?

The poignant album-ending ballad “Dying In LA” makes you wish there had been more tracks showcasing Urie’s pop-transcending emotive vocals.

It feels harsh to criticise a Panic! At The Disco record for being bold and exploring its brash nature to the fullest. ... But there's no getting around the fact this one feels like it could have done with a defter touch and some sonic restraint. [30 Jun 2018, p.53]

Between horns, strings, synths, guitars and all the rest this record is definitely an attack on the senses and shows Urie's knack for constructing a radio-friendly hit, but delve below the surface and it doesn't have much to offer. Certainly not enough to justify diminishing returns for a long running act, definitely not enough to keep me coming back for anything but the first few beats.
