I really like Ultraísta's debut but they have stepped things up here on its follow up. The base elements are still there, Godrich's stamp, Waronker's percussion, Bettinson's smooth delivery and of course the potential for some embodiment of Thom Yorke lurks everywhere. While the debut had all the hallmarks of a supergroup/collaboration album and was tentative, "Sister" is the sound of a band who are comfortable and confident enough to push things. There is more variety in tempo and tone, better songs and more standout moments. Whereas I felt the debut lacked the presence of a great songwriter such as Yorke, "Sister" has no such shortcoming. Sister ultimately is somewhat bereft of moments of heart-bursting passion, opting instead for a veneer of glacial shimmering coolness and as such is an album to be admired from a technical viewpoint rather than being one that induces a huge sense of emotional investment. Which is fine, you can just kick back, relax, admire it, and ride the sonic waves.

That Godrich is a master at harnessing restless energy should be no surprise. Here is further proof. [May 2020, p.112]

Sister completely one-ups the band’s debut from eight years ago.
