The project being a mixtape rather than an LP excuses the albums lack of substance and direction. Still Striving has provided a club anthem in Plain Jane, as well as many other songs made to blast loud. For what it is (a mixtape), Still Striving impresses.

On Still Striving, A$AP Ferg has somewhat returned to the glory of his Trap Lord days after his last album, Always Strive and Prosper, which was a slight dissapointment for me. Coming into this mixtape I didn't know what to expect, and the first song, Trap and a Dream featuring Meek Mill sets the project off to a great start. This is then followed by Rubber Band Man, which features a catchy hook and great beat, and is my favourite song of the project, despite a slightly lacklustre verse from Cam'ron. Other Highlights of the project for me are Olympian featuring Dave East, Nasty (Who Dat) featuring Migos, which has a slightly annoying autotuned hook but this is redeemed by Migos' verses. The Mattress Remix is great, with a hard hitting trap beat and Rocky and Ferg interchanging, and the East Coast Remix is another good song, with great verses from Rocky, Ferg, and Busta Rhymes, however French Montana ruins the song for me. There are flashes of this kind of openness, honesty and personality throughout but a whole album of "Tango" type tracks would have been really special. As it is though "Still Striving" isn't a bad release.

Ferg regresses lyrically, and pairs his bland rhymes with uninspired production that's hard to sit through. It's not all bad: Ferg still has a knack for writing catchy hooks, and it shows.

Sophomore album Always Strive and Prosper had ASAP Ferg striving to expand his lyrical and sonic palette and prospering less than half of the time. Still Striving then, perhaps self-consciously titled, course-corrects by dropping pretense and delivering what we came to Ferg for in the first place: banging beats, fire flows. Some of the time, anyway. 11 out of 14 of these tracks have guest features, and a high percentage of them don’t leave much impression.
