I'm sorry. Did I miss something? I would just like to know what radio station would play any of these songs besides maybe one or two DJs that happen to come across them. If I could give this album a 9.9 I would. It really makes me laugh when music critics listen to albums once that should be listened to at least 5 times before writing a review as this one should. It doesn't matter if this album is original or not. This is the most dense, artistic album i've heard in maybe a year. Expand

Pitchfork...as relative these days as...the Animal Collective...overeducated white kids and their fear of primal impulses

This is everything that is wrong with rock and roll. The Warlocks may never reach the heights of radio-propulsed superstardom, but they are certainly shooting for the stars by climbing on the backs of every dead "underground" rock'n'roll cliche that ever existed. By way of booze, smooze, and ruse, they landed a deal on the otherwise trustworthy Mute label. The used their magic to teleport back in time and rip-off all their favorite bands. In order to do so without being exposed, they had to dress themselves like cool people back in good ol' rock and roll days. Expand

Style over substance? Maybe. Cliched? Maybe. Do they create a truly fantastic noise? Definitely. Sometimes when trying to find something original really gets you down and when all you really want is something dirty, ugly and oozing with reverb, The Warlocks might just hit the spot.

Doug R, if these guys had half the talent the Animal Collective shakes off their sandals every night, I'd own two copies of all their records. As it is, they simply blow. Go listen to a Led Zepplin album and try to calm down.

While maybe not being the most original band in the world, the Warlocks write some of the best tunes out there. If you're looking for originality and a little less accessibility so you can label yourself one of "the elite" then look towards the Animal Collective. If you want solid songwriting with a dark edge to it than give the Warlocks a shot.

Im going to have to agree with the other reviewer. This is the worst case of Style over substance. This band is more about striking poses and being fashionable than making great music.

What has seven brains and not one original idea? The Warlocks. I'm calling bullsh!t on these rock and roll posuers. The only people this might impress is listeners who have yet to discover their influences. Even beyond the mockery, the songwriting and performance is limp. Strip away the haze of the imagery and haze and your left with a bunch of a$$holes.

  1. Somehow, the Warlocks have found the middle ground between the Raveonettes' Wall of Soundesque attack and the Flaming Lips' oddball fixation on love, death and outer space.
  2. Surgery is quite an impressive effort, sporting just the right combination of nods to their influences and carefully balanced instrumental execution.

A thoroughly realized, if singularly fixated, release. [#10, p.107]
