I will keep this simple. No, this is not BMTH's deathcore (or later, metalcore) sound. There were some hints in their previous album, Sempiternal, but nothing could have prepared the public for this. That's The Spirit is pop/electronica-infused, but very focused, emotional, and raw. Yet it seems to retain phenomenal production value as well. The various tracks vary from hard rock anthems with strong ties to metal, to dancepop-esque tracks meant to convey a message as much as they are meant to inspire. I know, many of you are BMTH fans and will decry their departure from the usual sound, but strictly looking at the album itself and its merits, regardless of who recorded it, That's The Spirit comes off as focused, energetic, brooding yet hopeful, very personal, and most importantly of all, phenomenal. This is the kind of album that would have been 2005's Album of the Year. Today, some may say it sounds somewhat dated, but I feel as if it is just what we need: a rock band willing to make an album on their terms to their standards. Albums like this are what keep rock truly alive. Expand

This is a very good album. Bring Me the Horizon changed their sound too much, that is true. But I feel they did it right. I'm a fan of Bring Me The Horizon since "There Is a Hell" and even after they changed their style, they still do a good job. It's not deathcore or metalcore. They changed for good. I didn't jump on the BMTH train until "Sempiternal". I absolutely loved that CD and "That's the Spirit" follows it up nicely. Kind of similar to In This Moment's "Blood" and "Black Widow". They were both going in a slightly new direction and they seem dedicated to follow through now that the money is flowing.

Very different than TIAH and Sempiternal... And not for the better. BMTH never stood out in the deathcore scene too much but once they altered their sound in TIAH, they took the world by surprise and actually garnered international acclaim, and they deserved it. Seeing the direction they were headed, I was excited for their next release.. Well it's finally here and how do I feel? Well I feel somewhat disappointed.

The album begins with "Doomed," a wonderful song that seems to come straight from Sempiternal.. After that, tracks 2-6 are a total bore. Just generic metal core. Track 5, "Follow You," is different than the rest of that group, and it's actually nice, but it's a bit repetitive.

Now once you get to track 7, track 7 through the end is great and very reminiscent of some Sempiternal songs: atmospheric, fast, and catchy. "Oh No," the closer, was actually surprising with the nice jazz-ish solo toward the end but sadly this experimentation is not seen a lot in the album. It felt flat, too polished, and too safe, in a nutshell.

I recommend: "Doomed," "Avalache," and "Oh No"

I feel it's a 6/10. Could've been higher if they left out the first half (save for the first song). I felt it bloated most of the record.

The first thing that hit me when I listened to the record is that Oli can sing. It's not even just ok it's GOOD. That's the main reason why for me this record is so much more enjoyable than 'Sempiternal'. I mean that was good but his voice got so tiring on it. On 'That's the Spirit' the band sound the most distant they've ever been from their deathcore roots with arena rock ready bangers, pop melodies and electronic instrumentation weaved throughout the tracks (I guess that's where the Radiohead influence comes in.) The melodies are quite catchy despite often containing very little lyrics. While some songs are repetitive and annoyingly simple for their length they have an undeniable likability to them that many pop/rock bands fail to capture. At the moment I really like this album and I can only see it growing on me in the future.

The Alt-Indie rock fits perfectly with Oli sykes' raspy upper register and soothing lows. Great album, maybe better than Sempiternal. Bring me the Horizon really shows that they can change up their sound and are not afraid of surprising their fanbase. This time at least, it proved to be a great decision as this album is very catchy and no song sound like another. Cool.

There's a lot of words that can describe "That's the Spirit", the British group's fifth effort - risky, ambitious and polarizing, to name a few. However, while this latest effort by Bring Me the Horizon might seem like a huge stab in the back to their diehard fans, their radical change of sound since 2008's "Suicide Season" is in reality, not that surprising. Each of the group's last two efforts - 2010's "There Is a Hell, Believe Me I've Seen It, There Is a Heaven, Let's Keep It a Secret" and 2013's "Sempiternal" were critically-acclaimed for the changes that the band made to their early metalcore sound. On this album however, the group abandons their metalcore sound entirely and adopt an electronic-influenced alternative-rock sound.

At around forty-five minutes, the album feel pretty tight and concise, especially since no track goes above five minutes in length, and none of the songs here feel like they drag out for too long. The arrival of keyboardist Jordan Fish into the group in 2012 benefitted greatly to the sound of "Sempiternal" and his presence on this album just simply cannot be ignored. For one, Fish and vocalist Oliver Sykes acted as the album's producers, and secondly, every song on this record has electronic instrumentation, the level of which varies with each track.

Oliver Sykes vocal style is another major talking point from this record, as he predominantly sings as opposed employing the screaming vocal style that dominated the band's early records, and for the most part, he delivers his vocals with a good deal of passion and conviction on topics such as depression, disloyalty and loneliness. One track, "What You Need" deals with self-harming and suicide in the typical metalcore-type manner but with a less aggressive, electronic pop-rock vibe.

At various points on this album, its sound could draw great comparisons to Linkin Park's more electronically-influenced work, particularly on "True Friends" "Throne" and "Avalanche". "Happy Song" is probably the only throwback (if only faintly) to their earlier sound, but is delivered with more of a punk rock feel. The intro to "Follow You" throws a small nod to house music, while the album closer "Oh No" is pure dance-rock. A re-recorded version of the single "Drown" appears on the album (a song that cracked the top twenty on the UK Singles Chart last December) and nods towards arena-rock, another common feature of many of the album's tracks, and is catchy, if not a little infectious.

The production on the record is overall, very good and a lot of these songs sound just as atmospheric as some of the album highlights on "Sempiternal", such as "Can You Feel My Heart", but songs like "Run" and "Follow You" seem to be slightly overproduced and a little too generic and as a result, effect the overall cohesiveness of the album. However, the production on "Happy Song", "Throne" and "True Friends" works so brilliantly with these particular instrumentals that any shortcomings regarding production can be easily overlooked.

Overall, this latest album sees Bring Me the Horizon directly challenging their fan base, for which the group must be commended. It is without question their most mainstream sounding album to date and their ambitious take on electronic-influenced rock must also be commended. The album's not a straight out masterpiece and is not without several flawed tracks, but as albums come, this will probably stand with the best of them come the end of the year.

Album Highlights - "Happy Song", "Throne", "True Friends", "Avalanche" and "Drown".

Taken on its own terms, within their new genre, BMTH have not only produced an excellent record, they are moving Screamo in new directions by bringing it into the mainstream, but without doing the usual Emo-Pop stuff that's been done to for years. See, there's a slight undercurrent throughout all this music where BMTH's heavy roots are breathing just under the surface. In fact, there's some screamo harmonies that are both a little deathcore heavy AND radio-ready beautiful at the same time. Let me start by saying I'm a big fan of metal/metalcore. I've seen many bands, such as Bullet for my Valentine, lose their edge with their changing sound, but this is one of the few cases where a band's style changing is only beneficial. Every song on the album has the power of a single, they are each unique, and have their own story to tell. This is the album I never knew I wanted.

While it is disappointing to hear them step away from the sound that made me fall in love with them in the first place, I can't deny the quality of the album.

Bring Me the Horizon steps out into this new territory with both confidence, and most importantly, talent. You'd think they've been doing stuff like this for years. They slip into these new styles with ease, while maintaining the lyrics and emotions that made their later albums (There Is a Hell... and Sempiternal) so fantastic.

It's sad to see another metal band go soft, and I definitely want this band to go back to their roots with their next album. Yet, despite that it's hard for me to find complaints with music this well made. I once said this band has the potential to become one of the elite in any genre they should choose to explore. This album proves that. It's fantastic and one I will be returning to time and time again. It's not the type of music I want or expect from the band, but with quality like this I'm more than okay with the results. So long as they return to heavier material in the future I have no problem with this change in style. They nail another genre of music.

    I give "That's the Spirit" a near-perfect score of 9.9/10.

Bring Me the Horizon are actually one of the most listenable bands from that mid-'00s born, Hot Topic clothed 'screamo' era that many of us tried on like a trendy fashion statement then quickly grew out of. But 2010's There Is a Hell was an overall excellent effort at expanding their formerly generic post-hardcore sound into experimental territory and genuine horizons. Then came 2013'sBring Me the Horizon are actually one of the most listenable bands from that mid-'00s born, Hot Topic clothed 'screamo' era that many of us tried on like a trendy fashion statement then quickly grew out of. But 2010's There Is a Hell was an overall excellent effort at expanding their formerly generic post-hardcore sound into experimental territory and genuine horizons. Then came 2013's Sempiternal, which incorporated influences of prog-rock, electronica and even introduced frontman Oliver Skye's clean vocals that were withered yet warm, a welcoming addition to their ever-expanding sound. Despite the album's explicit anti-religious themes, it felt as if they were pushing more toward a more straightforward sound throughout.

But experimentalism didn't quite make it into their 2014 single "Drown", a mostly mainstream radio-friendly rock single that's about as faceless as it is faded of the band's post-hardcore roots. And That's the Spirit follows along by turning Bring Me the Horizon into the '10's recreation of '00s-era pop-punk, pop rock and even cringeworthy nü-metal moments only the most nostalgic music listener could love. It's an equally devastating and disappointing blow to the fans that wanted Skyes and co. to enter an experimental version of their core sound, not a complete deconstruction in a desperate attempt to earn the band another charting single. The opening "Doomed" does a decent attempt at incorporating electronics into their newfound mainstream rock sound, but it eventually descends as soon as the rest of the tracks play on, never separating themselves from each other until the trance-y breakdown hits on the closing "Oh No".

It's certainly not a complete disaster more than it is a weak attempt at writing catchy, commercial rock songs that never end up sounding different from everything else we've already heard since the 21st century first began. It's especially concerning for a band capable of doing so much more than become a stereotype of the bands that have fell in their shadow for years.

Fans may be disappointed with the band from departing from their Suicide Season to Sempiternal sound, and fans of debut album Count Your Blessings may be even more disappointed. However, some songs, such as "Happy Song" and Drown" are some of the band's best material. "Happy Song" is the biggest highlight for me.

Mostly this album is just uninspried and boring. It has a few good songs and i especially enjoy "Drown" and "Follow You", i think these are very good songs. And i don't wanna bash on them for being a bit more commercial now, i don't give a damn about that. Its just dull and boring music, that is mostly not put together very well. They kind of **** up by trying something new.

    Goodbye BMTH.
It's basically just "can you feel my heart pt2" "can you still feel my heart", and so on, so fourth.
Once they cashed in on the success of that song, they sold out big time.

I don't know which is worse: how these "critics" get away with blatantly being bought out by Columbia, or how being Linkin Park-esque is considered a good thing. Also, going from **** deathcore to **** modern rock radio-core is a lateral move, not a progressive move.

Let this be a warning: do not let Revolver's crotchety, turn of the century taste fool you into listening to this

THIS record looks like "leftovers from sempiternal", and i believe it is. Some songs sounds like b-sides from last record, and new ones is... well, debatable.

Don't get me wrong, i love the electronic step that they took. I wish it was more of this chris-brown-rock, that sounds better that linkin park records of last five years, BUT the band should have push it harder. Dunno, them guys should probably forget about metal and write melodic r'n'b songs. Metal is only brings them down.

Well, to sum it up, this album is mixture of a poprnb single containing Doomed and Follow You as A and B side, and leftovers from previous hit record.

All them guys need is to finally realize, what kind of the band they want to be. They skip Simpeternal-kinda-way, but stuck with only couple of new genre songs, and it's not enough.

    Poor job, i expected more.

However, instead of moving forward logically, BMTH have jumped straight from the likeable angsty pop-metal of Sempiternal to a completely outdated nu-metal sound reminiscent of early Linkin Park.

The best song on the album, Blasphemy, is only good because it sticks out as the least boring pile of drivel on this overlong slogfest of an album. It would have been a strong closer, had BMTH not felt the need to put a goddamn five-minute long TRANCE song (yes indeed) at the end. Complete with inane lyrics and even a short sax solo, this pile of utter crap or "Oh No" as it is otherwise known, serves only to leave an extremely sour taste in the mouth after what could at least be described as a passable rock album.

The overprocessed guitars and overcompressed drums (although the drums are probably the best musical part of the album) in addition to the ever-present bargain-basement NI Massive dubstep wobbles and generic trance leads make this album seem like nothing but a second-rate Enter Shikari record. However, what bothers me the most is the almost endless presence of the singing of Oli Sykes, who we all know cannot actually sing, which only further serves to push the fact that this album is an overproduced pile of pop garbage made exclusively for a radio audience that isn't interested in it at all because it isn't 2003 anymore.

It's not all bad, as i pointed out there are certain redeeming qualities. Here's hoping that BMTH picks up the aggression and the rawness a bit more on their next album. But my goodness, this was a difficult listen.

    Oh no. I mean it.

I'll start with the good things. Which there were three of, thus the score I gave this album. Happy Song made me think that the album was going to be experimental alt metal, which I wouldn't have had a problem with. Throne was cool. Not much else though. Blasphemy was a breath of... well, air, I guess. I'd be lying if I said it was in any way fresh, or creative for this band.

Now for the bad. There is a lot of bad, so much that I'll split it up for each song.

Doomed - The chorus is fine, whatever. Don't really care. It was a baaaad sign though. I was really excited when I pressed play and thirty seconds in I was wondering if I pressed a Justin Beiber song on accident. So that didn't exactly have me going into the album with the highest hopes.

Follow You: I don't... I don't know what to say. You know when something awful happens to you and you can't even speak, or think? You're just sort of standing in shock? That's me, right now, when I first heard the song, and every time I had to acknowledge its existence in between. Let's just pretend this song didn't happen shall we? Next song.

What You Need: I had to relisten to this one to remember literally anything about it. Because it's BORING. It's not bad, it's not too light or too heavy, it's just nothing. What's going on? I already forget. I think every time I listen to this song my short-term memory is immediately wiped. What the hell is this song?

Avalanche: It's not bad. That's all I can really say, the drums at the beginning are cool but they make me think Lonely Girl by Tonight Alive is playing at first, which is a much better song anyway. The lyrics are fine. On the fence of going above passable. Oli's singing isn't bad, although I'm pretty sure everyone knows he can't... well, actually sing. Good job on the making it sound like he can though.

Run: It's Runaways by All Time Low. It's the **** bad nu-metal version of Runaways by All Time Low. Please kill me now.

Drown: It was good the first time I heard it. It stopped being good every time after that. If you're gonna write a song that's so obviously meant to be an anthem, write a god damn anthem instead of whatever the hell this is.

Oh No: Saxophone. Saxophone trance music. That's it that's all. **** SAXOPHONE.

There. That's Bring Me The Horizon's new album. We all knew something like this had to happen, we just didn't think so soon.

I'd like to think that in a decade this will be an album BMTH just tries to forget. Like Linkin Park I hope in a few years BMTH tries to go back to their roots and forgets this happened. That's The Spirit does have some Linkin Park sound to it, but while Linkin Park made it work for them for their early works with BMTH it just sounds like they forced it to be more radio friendly.

There are a couple of songs that work (Throne is the best on the album, albeit overproduced), but for the most part this is an album for people who REALLY liked "Can You Feel My Heart" off Sempiternal. Pretty much all of their metalcore sound is gone, and what's left is some uninspired electronic pop rock. In some songs Oli Sykes sounds completely out of his element trying to emote in a softer voice which really shows the limits of his vocal abilities.

I can deal with bands changing their sound, but this shift is so dramatic that it makes me wonder what the heck happened in the 2 years between Sempiternal and this to cause such a change. If you're a fan of older BMTH this album might not be for you unless you have very broad musical tastes.

Bring Me the Horizon had a fantastic opportunity to become one of the most iconic bands in British heavy metal. However, they threw it away to take a more mainstream, soft, politically correct approach. 2-3 of the songs are great, but most is unfortunately very generic music that you would hear on the radio. They've really thrown their original fans to the side on this album.

Musically it's safe to say that this album lived up to it's expectations if not surpassed them. With old sykes more than ever melodic vocals, Lee Malia's massive riffs, and Jordan Fish's production on this album, BMTH has created a rock masterpiece. The songs pretty much speak for themselves and no review can state their brilliance. The only thing that may not be up to the par that I was expecting is complete lack of metal. BMTH wanted this to be a bridge album between metal and more mainstream sounds. They may have achieved incorporating the mainstream sounds but there is a definite lack of that metal punch apart from oil's scream-sing style vocals and distorted chords which leaves a mark on the direction of rock more. After five or six listenings I couldn't erase the feeling of totally being immersed in a flat and dull project. Lyrics are usual 'depressed and hurt' unoriginal type of thing, melodies are too few interesting. Most of the time I found them just noticeable but way too repetitive and uninspired to be kept in mind on long-term. You can only tell the difference between the songs by the melodies that characterize them. In all tracks we reluctantly dive in this incessant drums noise without any decent attractive rhythm. Emotions invoked during the project are absolutely not underlined by the instruments which are constantly raging and screaming for no appearant reason. There is not enough place for silence and experimentation. This all unfortunately feels commercial.
