With all the hype that has built up this album including a release party, media buzz, Chance’s own Twitter account, I have to say I’m more disappointed than I can describe. Chance was one of the rappers that got me into rap music with Acid Rap, an experimental sonic piece that was cohesive and vibrant. The Big Day is exactly the opposite. Its overly long, perhaps a result of this streaming era mantra of quantity over quality. The production is just so boring, I mean just awful. Some songs legitimately sound like they are from a 90’s BET Soap opera. While his actual lyricism and rapping have some bright moments like on All Day Long and Let’s Go On The Run, it’s mostly uninspired and uninteresting. He’s ecstatic and joyous and I’m happy that he’s thriving right now but he’s lost that cutting edge, that hunger and vigor that made him such a raw rapper before. I honestly like his most recent EP better than every single song on this album. I guess I just miss the Old Chano. Not the sound persay but the bite. Expand

This album was a really fun listen with a lot of great production and sounds but that doesn’t mean it’s perfect. There are some sleepers on this one. Sometimes chance sounds monotone and emotionless or the production doesn’t have any depth, but thankfully there’s not many of those songs on here, like I said this album is really fun if you like to dance and some bars are pretty funny, I canThis album was a really fun listen with a lot of great production and sounds but that doesn’t mean it’s perfect. As a long-time Chance fan, I expected much more from this "debut" album. It is way too long with many unnecessary tracks that should have been scrapped. Too many skits - nobody cares about skits. Pretty disappointing entry from Chance.. Seems to have included a lot of mediocre songs for streams, not the highest highs, and pretty low lows. I expected more after being a big fan of acid rap, and coloring book as well.

Album's theme is all over the place, boring songs ruin this, as well as childish tracks like "Hot Shower". Could've been a 7 or weak 8 with fewer and focused tracks.

Favorite tracks: All day long, do you remember, roo, big fish- maybe: get a bag

Least favorite: Hot shower, big day(second half), sun come down

A good mix of the old and the new. Varied production, surprising features, and a lot of fun, interesting rapping/singing from Chance. Something for everyone!

This album finds itself wandering far too into pop territory, without the accompanying substance and adventure that made his preceding releases so refreshing. [Oct 2019, p.67]

TBD, on the other hand, wrangles with value-laden mindlessness in a manner that is both fun and endearing. TBD succeeds, in other words, on the merit of its recontextualisation of current trends into a project that is equal parts soapbox and sellable product.

Occasional nearsighted lyrical perspectives and three or four excellent but inessential tracks keep The Big Day from quite reaching masterpiece status, but it's still the most grown up (and the most polished) rendering of Chance's eternally bright spirit in his catalog.
