This is easily the best hip hop album of 2015, and one of the best albums overall. Kendrick lyrical ability to talk about so many issues including social, political, personal, etc., is just incredible and the production on the album is on point all of the way through. This was an instant classic and something we will compare other albums to in the future.

I would've thought he could never top this album, but I was wrong. I still give this a 10 because it deserves it without question. It is a lyrical masterpiece from the Bob Dylan of hip-hop and the modern, urban era. I do think DAMN is even better, but this is still a perfect 10.

Lamar's album is a Kanye-West-level testament to the value of the collaborative process, as there are so many amazing ideas, but never a loss of focus. More than anything, this is a timely, well-observed commentary that manages to be introspective, but totally aware of the world at large. Kanye West is not the voice of his generation: Kendrick Lamar is. To Pimp a Butterfly is a cultural capstone, whose message is too important to be ignored. The fact that it manages to sound amazing, and be so irresistible is a pleasant addition. Expand

Kendrick had a lot to live up to after GKMC, but he has somehow managed to to create something in a different league all together. This album is epic, this album is legendary. Kendrick has made something very special here, and it's very clear his only focus is on his art and it's so genuine and so lovely. This may be in the running for one of the best albums of the 2010s thus far.

It has that classic rap album vibe to it right away without regurgitating the genre. The consistent thread throughout the record with the poem that Kendrick recites and the final "interview" with the late 2Pac show that Kendrick wasn't just interested in putting out a good sounding record but one with a true message.

The Blacker the Berry, in my opinion, is the absolute stand out track among a record full of great songs.

I've been a fan of Kendrick's since his debut Section .80. He continually impresses me and put together a great concept album with his sophomore album. To Pimp a Butterfly is even more grand than that. The lyrics are coded, but can be read into. "Blacker the Berry" is a real highlight discussing racial issues with a killer beat and a great chorus. "Alright" and "King Kunta" are very catchy songs and the jazzy beats on "These Walls" and "Wesley's Theory" are stellar.

GKMC was rightfully hailed as one of the best rap albums in recent memory. Question is, how do you top that? The answer is "To Pimp a Butterfly". The track-list alone is enough to make you salivate. Musical legends such as George Clinton and Ron Isley. Artists at the peak of their powers such as Flying Lotus and Thundercat. TPAB is not easy listening, and it's exactly the kind of album not only rap music needs, but music as an art form needs. Radiohead released Kid A to split opinion. Kanye West released Yeezus to split opinion. It seems people are prone to not comprehend what it means to be musically experimental. On TPAB, Kendrick raps "You Ain't Gotta Lie", which serves as a microcosm for the entire album. Kendrick is heading in the direction he wants to, without restraint, but also realizing that he can still be a figurehead for rap. He need not compromise his artistry for popularity. GKMC showed us his lyrical and storytelling prowess, absolutely to perfection. There was a sense that there was the smallest amount of compromise with that LP, in order to appeal to the larger hip hop community. And he still did this to perfection. That album distinguished him from other rappers. To Pimp a Butterfly has distinguished Lamar from other musicians. Period. Here we have influences of jazz, jazz fusion, spoken word poetry, funk and even straight up 90s boom bap with "The Blacker the Berry". This isn't another concept album by any means, but it's just as cohesive as one. He switches flow and intonation several times on this record. We see on the second verse of the heartbreaking "u", Kendrick use a voice to sound as if his voice is breaking, so much so he sounds to be on the verge of crying. On this track, which is depressing but beautifully personal in equal measures, Kendrick seems to be self loathing, so much so to the point he essentially tells himself that he should have killed himself a long time ago. He also expresses regret about how he handled the death of a friend (most likely Dave's brother from Sing About Me). This track is not necessarily Kendrick being suicidal, but being heartbroken at how fame and fortune can blind a man of his priorities in life, in a deeply personal manner. This album addresses a huge amount of issues regarding race, money and politics, something which many conscious rappers have done before him. However, Lamar is far from forcing his messages down our throats; it's extremely nuanced. We hear Lamar speak lines of a poem after the end of several tracks, with each one adding to the one that preceded it. On the album's closer "Mortal Man", we hear the poem in its entirety, only to find out he is reciting it to Tupac Shakur. That's right. Tupac Shakur. Lamar has perfectly selected snippets from an interview with Tupac from 1994, written questions to match, and it works perfectly. The two seem to have an entirely natural conversation about race relations, society and politics. After revealing in its entirety the meaning of "To Pimp a Butterfly", Lamar asks "What's your perspective on that?" Then in desperation screams "Pac! Pac!" before the album comes to a close. Kendrick is left all alone without guidance or help from Tupac, which he sees as a role model. Again, it's another heartbreaking moment on the album. This album is extremely dense and layered, which is why every nook and cranny cannot be discussed right here right now. Listen for yourself. It doesn't matter if you've never even listened to hip hop before. This transcends genre. You could be a metal fan, techno fan, rock, dance, electronica; anything. If you're a fan of music, expertly crafted lyrics and talent, then this is an album for you. We'll go a long way to hearing a better album this year, and hearing a better hip hop album this decade. This is the most mature Kendrick album to date... At 28 years old, instead of doing what 99% of rappers are doing, he discusses love to another extent and brings back politics in rap due to the struggles of African Americans...
His lyricism is complex and is better than his last two albums...
When I first heard i last year, I thought that this album would flop but it is his best to date...

There are few rappers who can make a classic and followed it up with something even better and Kendrick Lamar is one of those rappers. I personally did not believe that there would one that is as good as good kid, m.A.A.d city but To Pimp a Butterfly proved me wrong. I could basically see no album topping this one this year. Well done, Kendrick and keep up the good work.

The people who love music will love this album. It is innovative, it is smart, it stays culturally true, the concept will go over the heads of most people who hear it, and it is unrelentingly creative. Kendrick Lamar, in my mind, just earned a place with the Hip Hop legends.

I laugh every time I hear someone mention "Yeezus" and try to compare that half-baked effort to this masterpiece. Kanye isn't a real rapper, he's a persona. Kendrick is real and it shines through with flying colors on this release. Originally I gave this a 9, I'm updating to a 10 because subsequent listens have impressed me that much. With that being said, I did not expect to like this album as much as I enjoyed GKMC. I loved GKMC's storytelling, and the production on every track was phenomenal. I could also relate to Kendrick's story. I believe it is easily one of the best albums that has been released in my lifetime (since 1995). So, going into this project, I obviously had high expectations and confidence that Kendrick had the ability to make another amazing record, but I did not think I would personally like it quite as much. I was wrong. Songs such as "i" and "King Kunta", which were both released prior to the album, fit so much better in context, as tracks like "Backseat Freestyle" did in GKMC. The only thing this album falls short in comparison to GKMC is in overall catchiness. On first listen, GKMC's story hits hard if you're paying attention, and certain tracks stand out as single material. With TPAB, I feel that multiple listens are required to have a slight understanding of the concept, and almost no songs stand out as singles. Kendrick even takes a huge risk by changing the hit "i" into a live, reworked version of the track to better fit the concept. What this album lacks in catchiness, however, is more than made up for in creativity and concept. This is one of the most creative mainstream rap albums I've heard in years, if not ever. The beats are funky, the flows are unique (and sometimes spoken word), and Kendrick's raw emotion shines more than ever, especially on the eerie track "u". Not to mention the ending of the album, an interview with Tupac himself. This interview is all the more compelling for long time Kendrick fans, as K.Dot claims that he was visited by Pac in a dream years ago. Pac told him to keep making music and to spread his message. This fact makes the interview absolutely chilling and all the more real.
Tupac once said, "I'm not gonna change the world, but I guarantee that I will spark the brain that will change the world." This brain belongs to Kendrick Lamar.

I'll say it: I'm not a fan of hiphop. In fact, I don't listen to it, usually. That's not because I think it's bad music - it's just not my thing. To Pimp A Butterfly changed this for me and is the first hiphop album that I didn't only like listening to, I absolutely loved it. It was an instant favorite. Despair, hope, sadness, protest, anger, happiness sips through every song, not just conveying the thoughts and feelings of just one man but of thousands, if not millions of people. Creating a consecutive third critically acclaimed album would be a feet that is hard for most artists to even see a glimpse of. However, Kendrick has never gone for the critically acclaimed, he has put out some of the most personal albums we have seen in a long time.

Kendrick has now reached a level of fame few artists will ever see and now he has been dealing with his new found fame for the past several years since the release of GKMC. We've all heard songs about artists being rich and successful but Kendrick has created another personal effort dealing with the current state of racism, unjust, wealth, his own faith, his past life in Compton, and his depression. This album ventures to be almost experimental as it's depressed overtone of songs like "u" and "How Much a Dollar Cost" can be unnerving to listen to (still great songs).

This album is the voice we need in music right now, to put it simply. To Pimp a Butterfly might not be for everyone, not even Kendrick Lamar fans. This is quite a bit different than GKMC for it strays away from the West Coast rap inspirations of Dr. Dre and Snoop Dog and takes inspiration from his new found collaborations with Brainfeeder's Thundercat and Flying Lotus. Musically, this album is very moody and dark. It's a mix of jazz, r&b, soul, electronic, alternative, and spoken word all mixed into rap.

After hearing "The Blacker the Berry" on Feb. 10, I was convinced this was going to be a rap-centered album, but since it leaked on iTunes two days ago, I was wrong. It's a grower of an album to truly appreciate and understand all of it's song wholly. On a personal note without giving away too much about To Pimp a butterfly's message (it's just something you need to hear and take in yourself to appreciate it even more), this album will most likely be my album of the year. It may only be mid March of 2015, but this album is so ambitious and takes on much more than what most artists can. Kendrick Lamar, has proven to be more than just GKMC, he is what rap has needed for a long time now. It's more than rap that Kendrick perfects, his message in this album pushes us into a new level of depth in lyricism.

At the end of the album there is a risk: the listener, expecting bangers, hyped about hearing something in the way of that classic called Good Kid m.A.A.d City, can find the album boring, monotonous. The listener, if is a stan for good music more than just a rap fan, will appreciate what will sure be the best rap project of 2015. Why? Perfectly produced, with feats of talented jazz, soul, funk and hip-hop artists that do their best in every song (as it did Quentin Tarantino with Travolta in Pulp Fiction, Kendrick manages here to resurrect artists far from what one day were, like Snoop Dogg). There is so much soul on this. The story-telling hability of Kendrick throughout the album remain intact and the lyrics are deeper than ever. He has given something fresh and unexpected. Is there something wrong or deceiving? Well, the only argument somebody could use against TPAB is the fact it wasn't what he/she was looking for. This is not a catchy album but a classy album for open-minded listeners. And if none of all these things convince you, just think about this: which other modern rapper could have made this album? I hesitate to label this album as hip hop, or even to refer to Kendrick Lamar as a rapper, since neither labels do justice to the artistry he has displayed on To Pimp A Butterfly. If this doesn't raise the bar for other artists, I'm not sure if anything will.

Everything about this album is executed masterfully. The music of course stands out as the most intriguing to me. It's primarily jazz influenced, but there are lots of other styles here as well, and it's all woven together so intricately that each song retains its own distinctive character while still forming a cohesive whole. It's pretty complex stuff too. The song structures are strange and change abruptly, the chord progressions are mostly nonstandard, and the live musicians are clearly very talented. The music alone makes this album a standout. And of course, Lamar's rapping is on point throughout. His flow is really dynamic and constantly interesting, and the lyrics are quite poetic and never stupid or cliche.

I've listened to this about 3 times but I feel like I've only scraped the surface at all the different layers. It's dense, complicated, and extremely visual music, but at times it's also very chill and hypnotic. And it's also not radio friendly at all, which I admire coming from such a big name in the industry. Bravo!

You might not love it from the first listen and most certainly won't understand everything he raps about, but listening to it again and again will help you digest what Kendrick Lamar talks about. The production once again is over the top with Lamar making great choices about the musicians he chooses to work with, "keeping it in the house" as he's told, managing to get features from legends like George Clinton and Ronald Isley, but also experimenting with innovative artists like Flying Lotus and Thundercat! I'm frustrated with some peoples' reviews. I respect it if you don't appreciate the scat-style rapping he at times does which often strays from the jazz-influxed background (appreciate WHY he's doing it though), but to say you wish he just did a GKMC part 2 is straight stupid. Kendrick is one of the brightest musical talents we have seen in years, you can't (and more importantly you don't want to) try and put this guy in a box.

I won't go out on a limb and say "this is better than GKMC" because both albums, although styled quite differently, are amazing in their own right. Also, I came to my conclusions to both GKMC and the highly-underrated section.80 over a span of months, not 3 days. So I'll give it time. But now you must stop reading other people's reviews, kick back, relax, and enjoy this early (or late) christmas gift from Kendrick.
