Rayland's latest and most high-energy album is solid from start to finish. Every song is a well constructed work of pop indie rock in the musical vein of George Harrison with a little bit of Father John Misty cynicism and satire in light doses. This set of songs is summery and suitable for parties while still feeling intelligent and fully fleshed out.

What unifies these wildly disparate modes [political satirist. self-loathing lothario, celebrity stalker, Cali yacht-rocker, and Nilsson-like romantic crooner] is Baxter's musical sophistication, which puts him closer to the witty elegance of 10cc than the alt.country label he's been slapped with. With his laid-back charm, wit, and earthy sincerity, Baxter has shown his acumen for quality songcraft before, but on Wide Awake, he ties it up in one wholly engaging package.

It's actually the antithesis of Father John Misty: something that could be explored endlessly for depth and nuance but could also just play happily in the background to please multiple generations on a long family road trip.
