Why don't these critics get it? "X&Y" is just full of melody, flow, and rythym. And these people call themselves "music critics". This album..when all is said and done will be a classic..kind of like U2's Joshua Tree. I, like most Coldplay fans cannot comprehend as to why bad reviews are written about this album..it is simply great music..just shut up and listen. Oh by the Why don't these critics get it? I've never listened to Coldplay before, but this Album is the best I have listened to in a long time. Listen to it on headphones really loud and it gets a whole new sound! I cannot understand it gets bad reviews. This is simply great music. Isn't it all a totally subjective question of taste and mood, anyway, How can anyone be in a position to trash it officially???

As Paste magazine suggests, it takes commitment to listen to this album.....when I did, I WAS rewarded! Martin admits that his lyrics are no great shakes, but he feels the music and chords are exceptional...and I agree. As for his voice, I find that he uses that as an instrument. This is one of my favorite albums!

There is nothing worse than boring music, and Coldplay is bordom distilled. Perhaps the most absurdly overblown band in history.

This is simply the best album i have ever heard. A cocktail of beautifull songs mixed with a strange sense of darkness that i have not heard since Radiohead's Ok Computer. It sends shivers through your bones. Breath taking!

While this may be a very successful record, it doesn't quite mak sense with me. The entire album sounds like some old B-sides that got some touch ups. Way too similar to their previous work, it's hard to distinguish them as anything new. It is obvious their trying a little harder, but do songs like "Speed Of Sound", and "Fix You" make it sound like they've made much progress?

This is a huge disapointment. The lyrcis are so crappy and they're all cliches (Every step that you take/Could be yourbiggest mistake/It could bend or it could break/ But that's the risk that you take). Pure crap! And the transition into a more electronic style is pathetic (prob trying to be compared again with Radiohead). They should stick with they're old stuff.

I agree with Bob S. The lead singer sounds like someone just kicked him in the nuts. His voice is like nails on a chalk board and Coldplay's lyrics are cheesey and some just don't make any sense! Hopefully, coldplay will die out.

this album takes work to enjoy. i didn't like it on first listen but it kind of snakes around in your head and you keep listening to it. there are some absolutely brilliant songs on here like 'fix you' and 'a message'. my favorite track...right now...is 'white shadows', although i seem to find a new favorite song every few days. My biggest complaint about this album is that i am always thinking this album COULD have been one of the greatest ever and it just fals a bit short. there are too many spots where songs just never build from a nice beginning...they kind of drone away and you forget you are even listening to them. i will say this: after the very first time that i listened to this album, the first thought that popped into my head was that the NEXT Coldplay album will be a instant classic. i still think that and i guess that sums up how i feel about this album. I usually try to provide a little more explanation than this when I reject a record, but this was just really really really boring. It doesn't really invite any further scrutiny. The second CD was better.

Not nearly as good as the previous albums - makes you understand why non-fans feel Coldplay is contrived and tepid. Still a playable record, but very forgettable as well.

This is Coldplay's best album. They have finally reached U2-like status with their lyrical content and musical styles. Best song on the album, "Talk" is also, in my opinion, the best song of 2005.

Wow! I think those who critic this album might be crazy! This is by far the best album ever! Even if you might not listen to it on radio stations quite often.. X&Y offers great songs from the greatest band.. COLDPLAY!!

I am officially in love with this album... although in my eyes it doesn't beat Parachutes i think it's genius and i don't understand why people give feedback if they hate the album.. here's a plan if you don't like it don't listen to it and stop trying to ruin it for other people!

Very good chord progressions that rival the Beatles. The sound is not bland and the CD begs for me to play it again. Great lyrics and sound. Good love songs. What can I say!

If coldplay's head gets any bigger people are going to have evacuate from the island. This cd is awful. The coldplay genre is lame , unexciting , and dying quickly. Once Chris martin hits puberty then maybe the band will be able to mature.

I can sum up X&Y in six words: an imitation of U2 and Radiohead. John Buckland is the biggest rip off I think I've ever heard. He's just capitalising off a sound The Edge perfected over many years. This whole album is a load of boring shite. "Fix You" is the worst song of this year, by far. Don't buy this album, it's a waste of money. "Twisted Logic" and "X&Y" are I can sum up X&Y in six words: an imitation of U2 and Radiohead. If you want to buy some good albums, pick up "The Unforgettable Fire" by U2 (this is the album Coldplay have been trying to recreate on AROBTTH and X&Y) "Achtung Baby" by U2, "The Bends" by Radiohead, and "OK Computer" by Radiohead. These are actually GOOD albums. Don't be fooled by the imitators. Coldplay are nothing more than a bland version of U2 and Radiohead combined. Can't believe everyone's falling for the act. Expand

This album rocks! The songs there are just so soothing! Those people who says that it isn't good does not have any taste! Th song For You is so soothing that it makes you feel 'high' and makes you feel like you are flying! Very suitable to listen to during airplane flights! 10 Thumbs Up!

OK, but in the end unadventurous. It's amazing how quickly one gets fed up with it. If only they had let themselves go a bit more - "Twisted Logic" should be the point of departure for their next album.

[Coldplay] have made their masterpiece. [Jun 2005, p.112]
  2. Confident, bold, ambitious, bunged with singles and impossible to contain, ‘X&Y’ doesn’t reinvent the wheel but it does reinforce Coldplay as the band of their time.
  3. They have chosen to opt for the standard formula: it's elegiac, mid-tempo, stadium-friendly ballads all the way.
