The heartbreak on Give Till It's Gone is savage and genuine.

Harper is in top form, crafting songs that succeed lyrically and musically, capturing much of the blues-driven energy of White Lies while mixing in a delicate simplicity that adds a layer of depth to the bluesman's latest effort.

It is raw, warped, and cathartic.

The 10th album from slide-guitar master and jam-band darling Ben Harper is his most searingly personal album, an expression, no doubt, of the recent implosion of his marriage to actress Laura Dern.

He might lack a sense of direction personally (at least right now), but it's this lack of clarity that has produced a very focused record.

While nowhere near as focused as 2009's White Lies for Dark Times, Give Till It's Gone does possess moments when all of Harper's gifts as a writer and guitarist are evidently clear.

Harper sounds most engaged on the disc's loudest, least melodic cuts: "Clearly Severely" is a furious, TV on the Radio–style soul-punk blast.

Ben Harper returns with his follow up to 2009's blues-heavy "White Lies for Dark Times" which he did with his new band Relentless7. Now he'sBen Harper returns with his follow up to 2009's blues-heavy "White Lies for Dark Times" which he did with his new band Relentless7. Now he's back and he brought a Beatle with him. Give till it's Gone is nearly just as great as "White Lies" focusing more on destructive blues than quiet folk tunes. Ringo Starr helps him out with two tracks, including a great jam called "get here from there" He rocks out on "Rock N Roll is Free" It's not, it costs money. But for Harper, every penny is worth it.
