Back when the album was first announced, I was extremely apprehensive and upset that she was doing a full pop album. Her country material is what makes her so special and she shows a whole lot of heart in them, which was what made me fall in love with her. From pop songs on Red, WANEGBT and 22, I thought that 1989 would just be an album filled with such songs.

Thankfully, my expectations were blown out of the water. Yes, 1989 is a full-on pop album that sounds like it fits into top 40 radio, but in this album she joins that herd of pop artists, and takes it up several notches. Despite the lack of specific details in her writing that made her old work song very real, she instead conjures vivid imagery and feelings with metaphors and sweeping statements, making the songs feel very universal and perfect for stadium chants. There is a newfound wit and self-awareness, proving that Swift has indeed matured.

The production is pop bliss, yet it doesn't feel generic at all. 80s influences are peppered everywhere, not too much such that it just feels like a tribute record, but it makes her brand of radio-friendly pop music very timeless and different from the rest.

Overall, Swift is a genius in music. She conquered country, and with her first full pop attempt, she has conquered it and mastered it better than any of her contemporaries. It really doesn't matter what genre she is in because Taylor Swift is a whole new genre of heartfelt and intelligent music, with endless hooks.

Welcome To New York – The Track did what it was supposed to do. Introduce ‘1989’ to the world as Taylor’s first documented pop record.

Blank Space – Ms. Swift’s Contemporaries will probably have to either change their release dates or be content with #2 when this song becomes a single (and it will). It’s lyrically her best POP song; the carefully paced verses mixed with the quick witted transitions make this a highlight on the entire album.

Style – After hearing the chorus for the very first time via Target commercial, I assumed the song would evoke the same ‘Fairytale’ aura Taylor usually enjoys. (wrong) Under four minutes, the song is a sinister track with high hopes but acknowledges the cons outweigh the pros.

Out Of The Woods – The lyrics are probably one of the most honest in the entire record. It has her signature songwriting style she frequently enjoys. The echoes you hear throughout the song are a nice touch.

All You Had To Do Was Stay – If RED had Starlight, 1989 has this. General speaking, it’s a fun, catchy, light pop song with a repetitive hook. It gets the job done.

Shake It Off – Went Number One and is currently enjoying its throne on top of the iTunes charts. Whether you like it or not, you didn't pass Swiftober without hearing this song at least once a week. Basing the entire album on this song would be foolish, simply because it’s probably the weakest track on the album.

I Wish You Would – A definite standout track. I had to catch up to the song, maybe it’s just me but the song blew me away. ‘Impact-ful’ would be the word I would use to describe this Track.

Bad Blood – Probably the most awaited song from the entire album. Who knew Taylor would be able to pull off a song that you’d think would be created for the likes of Avril Lavigne or Katy Perry. Only, part of her appeal is that she creates her own music. So, even if the sound changes, it still sounds like Taylor Swift.

Wildest Dreams – A very Lana Del Rey inspired track and Taylor knowingly did that on purpose. The song manages to entrance you without having to put much effort. She could have spiked each verse with more diverse words or syllables that made you want to pick up a dictionary but she didn't. Why? The simplicity of the lyrics was meant to match the lazy-esque melody. Something Lana often does.

How You Get The Girl – Ah, this was refreshing. Take out Max Martin and this song could have easily made the final cut to any of her past albums (assuming she wrote it in ‘07). It sounds the closest to her previous work, groundbreaking? Probably not; appreciated? Very Much Yes.

This Love – Swift teams up with her Go-To-Guy (and my personal favorite), Nathan Chapman. You can feel the genuine and familiar chemistry between the two, especially after 1:40 mark. If ‘Innocent’ from 2010 had a baby, this would be it.

I Know Places – Impressive; especially after hearing the voice memo, where you realize that Taylor came up with the melody. I automatically assumed Swift took the back seat on this song when I first heard it but once again, she managed to surprise me.

Clean – The Best song on the entire record. Big contributor, Imogen Heap did an incredible job. Her distinct sound is evident throughout the song. Clean does exactly what it sets out to do, provide us with a Clear sounding, Mind settling record that evokes the Crispness of Heap’s abilities and favored rawness of Taylor’s voice and her signature Songwriting style.

Wonderland – Deluxe edition Tracks usually disappoint me but the first track ‘Wonderland’ does what it sets out to do and proves that Swift IS very much capable of re-creating her “I Knew You Were Trouble” success if she wanted to.

You Are In Love – Every Swift Record has that ONE song that manages to make your heart twist itself in every possible direction all at once. How she enunciates every word, every lyric, the way she purposely quivers her voice. The vulnerability evident from start to finish is why “You Are In Love” makes for a perfect Love song.

New Romance – What ‘Welcome To New York’ should have sounded like, but didn't. This track screams ‘Rooftop Party Anthem in your Apartment Building.’

Best of the Bunch: Blank Space, This Love, Clean, New Romance. '1989' proves to be the only pop record this year worthy of going 'Platinum'.

Taylor Swift shifts into a new genre, but not without the things that make her loved by millions of fans. Here is is just as evocative as in her previous works and in the end, it's her most mature effort to date. Yes, many songs make you want to dance but they do not lack substance as found in many pop albums. She is doing her own thing and is not afraid to.

Best pop album I've heard in the last few years.
Sounds a little like classic pop of 80 's but still has it's own persona.
All the songs are extremely catchy and the lyrics are so deep.
Her vocals just gets better and better over the years.
Taylor Swift just proved again that she is one of the best artists of the last decade.

Throughout her short but accomplished career, Swift has shown the world that versatility is her strongest asset. 1989 is further testament to this. For instance, 'Out of the Woods' never really hits a climax that a song of its sound can. The synth instrumental backing to several songs also has much avenue for expansion, notably for 'Bad Blood' and 'Clean'.

Nevertheless, there are some gems here, the best songs being 'Welcome to New York', 'Shake It Off', 'Wildest Dreams', and 'This Love'. Thus, while 1989 is a very good album, its unfulfilled potential limits it to a score of 7/10.

This is one of those albums in which I love every single song on it which is quite rare with me. The last time I had an album with the same effect was with Ariana Grande's debut album 'Yours Truly' back in 2013 so its very nice to have an album that I can listen to without skipping any songs.
One major thing that appealed to me was how diverse her voice could be, especially in songs such as 'Welcome To New York' where she sounds very similar to Gaga or even 'Wildest Dreams' where she sounds Lana Del Rey-esque.
Overall, I think this album will change the minds of people like me who used to hate her music. It is a very well-produced album with songs to help anyone through situations in life. Her voice is spectacular and the songs have good meanings and lyrics. I hope this album gets universal acclaim like it deserves.

Touted to be Taylor's best work so far, if we put all the albums side by side and judge, we may say, this is the most mature album she has composed. The elements of surprise in terms of lyrics or musical intellect or instruments used are plenty. There are adamant anthems (Shake It Off), selfish transitions (Welcome To New York), soulful Ballads (Wildest Dreams), quirky jokes/taunts (Blank Space), Lyrical masterpieces (Clean), Magical Thrills (I Know Places) and a lot more that this album offers.

Swift had come of age, seen it all, by the time RED came out, this album shoves off her boy-dependent image and shows bold self dependence. Where "Welcome to New York" is unavoidable, irrational, forgettable and slightly irritating opener, "Blank Space" is a genius. How? I won't spoil it for you, hear a few times and you would find out how comical it ACTUALLY is! "Style" is ultimately catchy and isn't as silly-party as '22' was. "Out Of the Woods"may not be a masterpiece, but it surely it quite a good song to listen to. "All You Had To Do Was Stay" reminds of some of the golden hits of 80s era. "Shake it Off" by this time has hit the ears so many times that it has become a bit avoidable, yet when it comes up on a whole-album-play it reminds of the excitement and journey of 2 months to the date, when the album is in our hands. "I Wish You Would" is a dramatic fast-paced song that at one go reminds of Miley Cyrus songs, but on another go, we discover how it is the old-Swift at heart, slightly boycentric that is. Everyone expected "Bad Blood" to be 'Better Than Revenge' part II, but rather than a stormy guess-the-celebrity song, it is more generalized and 'relatable'. Swift offers her fans a song they could dedicate to their enemies. "Wildest Dreams" is by far the most mature song on the album. It is soulfully absorbing both lyrically and musically. If you have been in a relationship, there is all chances that you would be reminded of the good-times you had had with your counterpart and the times when you were afraid, if this ends, how would you survive. "How You Get The Girl" goes back to Speak Now times (did I hear guitar?),it is funny and a sly guide for the boys to get their girls back. It is silly, yet a fun listen (like Stay Stay Stay from Red), but ultimately forgettable. "This Love" is a genius ballad. No more words, you must just listen to this strongly confessional song written and composed by Swift alone(the only song on the album). "I Know Places", is, sonically, the most different song on the album. It has some intense imagery, could be called as one of the most memorable songs on the album. It takes you to places you might have never been. This may go down in the history. "Clean" is the perfect end, the album could get. It comes directly out of the conscience and has some hardcore intense and 'real' lyrics. All Too Well part II, lyrically because it doesn't narrate a relationship but talks about finally being clean. It also, very truly, says, if you have [finally!!] moved on over some relationship or phase in life, it doesn't mean you don't remember it.

The deluxe edition songs are more of the party songs, I consider the voice memos as the real jewels there. Buy deluxe version for those voice memos and the catchy pop songs. It is recommended.

Overall, this is 'one of the' best works of Taylor Swift and she could definitely be proud of it. It has got some of the best songs and makes a smooth track-to-track transitions. It has got some real masterpieces and very few forgettable sounds, making the album, yet another contribution to making the Swift a legend.

1989 may not be as deep as Speak Now, but is definetely a very consistent album. Her songwritting is in one of the best phases.
The highlights are: "Blank Space", where she tells a tale using the point of view that the media created; "Style", which comes right after BS, the song starts really calm, but then the album's best chorus starts; " I Know Places", where she tells us the story of

Also, the Deluxe Version of the Album is excellent, "Wonderland", "You Are in Love" and "New Romantics" are song that should be on the Standard version.
Anyway, 1989 is the best mainstream album released this year, and proves that Taylor never disappoint us, even when she completely changes her sonority.

The country superstar who turned pop in this album proved she's not going to make some trash pop record. 1989 is bold, upbeat and emotional and sounds exactly like her. the best album of the year. The songs that tend to move in the happy bubble gum directions are Welcome to New York, How You Get The Girl and New Romantics which yes are very happy/positive songs, but they still are lyricly decent for a field that normally doesn't have lyrically sharp songs. You get more steampunk sounds like Blank Space, Bad Blood, I Know Places, and Wonderland which are very great for a "pop" album. Then 1989 offers a refreshing pop ballad sound with Wildest Dreams, This Love, and You Are In Love aren't to slow they seem like happy ballads which is great. And then we have our mix of all of the sounds with Style, Out Of The Woods, and Clean. 1989 is genius and one of our generation's best pop albums. Expand

Synth-pop sweetness spread throughout an album, but songs that sound completely different from one another, is what makes 1989 so special. Previously hailed as "Princess of Country Pop", Swift sure surprised an entire industry to how slick and sophisticated her first "official, documented" pop album turned out to be. Lyrically, the album is toned down, compared to songs from "Speak Now" or "RED", which both feature a set of Swift's lyrically powerful songs to date. But that doesn't make it her worst album she's ever wrote. It's actually the opposite because even though she didn't go full detailed with this album, that doesn't mean this isn't her best in forging an album with actual meaning, depth and a hint of playfulness, like her previous albums. The production was another surprise, considering it was mostly done by Max Martin and Shellback. When Max Martin comes to mind, I automatically think of the dozens of generic pop songs that's ruled the radio but surprisingly, he (and Shellback, Ryan Tedder, etc.) helped Taylor achieved an actual pop album that makes sense to her and her fans, and defy the music industry. 1989 was her way of figuring out what she liked and what she didn't liked. And I'm glad I liked what she liked.

Some highlights would be: "Style", "Out Of The Woods", "All You Had To Do Was Stay", "This Love", "New Romantics"

1989 of Taylor Swift is a revelation. It deserved to win Album of the Year. My favorite song is New Romantics.

“New Romantics” is a satirical song discussing how “new romantics” view love and life. It addresses the nonchalant and whimsical nature of the way young adults approach love. Notably, Taylor doesn’t segregate herself from these young adults. Her constant use of personal pronouns such as “we” and “I” indicate that she has also embraced this mindset.

In past albums, Taylor approached love from very extreme stances namely:

    Extremely idealistically i.e. “Love Story”
A bitter or angry reponse to breakups i.e “Picture to Burn”
An extremely heartbroken, torn apart stance i.e. “Dear John”

However, this album introduces Taylor’s new mindset and approach towards love. We see her transition through a breakup and making the discovery that love is not a fairytale, and the chances of a happy ending is very unlikely – so it’s better to live life freely and not take relationships too seriously. Notably, the album begins with “Welcome to New York,” which marks the beginning of her transition, and this song, as the last track on the deluxe edition, indicates how she will be heading into the future – free falling.

Such a good pop album, is full of hits and don't use this basic and boring pop sounds. The vocals are almost all on point and every song has perfect words that only Swift can give us in this way. It isn't boring or basic like PRISM by Katy Perry. The best album to show what pop is.

Deserves 10/10 stars! Absolutely stunning album and it reminds me of Katy Perry's album "PRISM" as it is such a hit album! Her voice really shines in "Wildest Dreams" and " This Love". I really enjoy this album.

POP PERFECTION. One of the best pop albums ever recorded. I love everything about this album.

One of the best albums of pop music. 1989 Taylor Swift's album has too much to say through her lyrics. I love her music because they transmit lived and real sense compering like others lyrics which are completely childish and repetitive.

with her first strictly pop album, i was not disappointed by taylor swift. she had some really strong hooks and catchy instrumentals. her lyrics stayed within the same range she has always had, not exactly shallow but not deep either. she had some really nice songs(wildest dreams) and some stupid ones(shake it off). i get why this made swift the monumental figure she is today

It's a great album, a lot of good compositions. Taylor did a great job on pop music! There's so much lovely songs, great beats and Taylor's voice is angelical. Loved 1989!

Probably one of Ms. Swift's finest works. She just keeps re-defining herself, and this is just a proof of how she manages herself and works. If there is to be a defined list of album which everyone should listen to before they die- THIS ALBUM WOULD BE AT THE TOP! Many people were sceptical when they heard Shake It Off. Taylor had gone from country to pop. But that is not a bad thing. Beyoncé went from making radio friendly Pop/R&B hits to making a somewhat Alternative/Soul piece of work. Beyoncé went from making radio friendly Pop/R&B hits to making a somewhat Alternative/Soul piece of work. Yet everyone still loves her. Shake It Off is such an uplifting and inspiring song in the sense that we must not let bullies get to us. To summarise this album in one word would be reinvention. This shown from the album opener Welcome To New York which is all about starting life in the big city to New Romantics- an anthem to which EVERYONE can embrace themselves. The album itself is timeless, but a particular stand-out track would be Blank Space. It was this track which made the undeniably talented Swift the credential of being the first female artist to replace herself upon the Billboard Hot 100, as well as giving her biggest seller and having the quickest amount of views to 1,000,000,000 for a music video for a female artist (prior to Adele's Hello). The song is all about putting atrocious rumours to bed by feeding them with their own pills. All in all this album is flawless. It is very rare to find a flawless album (which is not Swift's). The last was Gaga's The Fame Monster in 2009, and it has taken 3 years for Dua Lipa to create another flawless album with her debut. TAYLOR WE LOVE YOU!!! Expand

Taylor did it better than the definition of perfection. 1989 goes on selling 10 million albums worldwide, scoring 5 BB #10 hits including 3 #1 hits and wins 3 grammies, including Album of the year. Definitively a masterpiece of the 21st century!

Todo el álbum es perfecto, desde la primera hasta la última canción.
.."Stay Hey, all you had to do was stay Had me in the palm of your hand Then, why'd you had to go and lock me out when I let you in Stay, hey, now you say you want it Back now that it's just too late Well could've been easy All you had to do was stay.."

Although not her best work this album was really good and deserved the successful era it had, her switch to pop music wasn't a disappointment and she took the world by storm. Looking forward for what her next album has in store for us.

With 1989 she has succeeded in leveraging the most cordial and familiar of pop music outpourings to something that feels like a statement, a work of note and the sinew of some kind of emotional connective tissue–binding tastemakers, rock critics, guys I work with and my 12 year old cousin; irrevocably and unexpectedly.

What stands out more than the production is how consistently solid the album is, and how effective the lyrics and songwriting.

1989 is full of cliches, but the truth is that we wouldn't expect them to not be present anyway.
