By taking the brutal traits of numerous metal sub-genres, Nails have created a violent record that leaves you begging for a reprise, only to press play and relive the assault all over again.

Abandon All Life isn't a radical departure, but it is the most clever use of the band's tools to date.

This is smart, well-plotted music, which makes its anger all the more effective.

If you had the latest Pig Destroyer record high up on your ‘Best of 2012’ list, if you hold John Peel’s Napalm Death and Carcass sessions close to your heart then Abandon All Life will be a record for you to cherish. If not: move along, there’s nothing for you here.

A subtle sense of dynamics (cf. "Wide Open Wound") keeps the roar from getting monochromatic, but don't blink intensity rules here.

The punkier title track stands out, as does the ferocious No Surrender, both featuring in their breakdowns the standout riffs from the album. But too much of the rest is lost in a barrage of blast beats, bluster, and bludgeon.
