In the end, anyone who’s tapped feet or nodded along to Fruit Bats in the past will find plenty to embrace with this new batch of familiar, comfortable tunes.

Despite the downbeat album title, Johnson has crafted winning, uplifting music that’s inspirational, even rousing, under any name.

On the whole, Absolute Loser is dominated by an energetic wistfulness and sweet melodicism that characterize most of Johnson's work, whatever his instrument palette. While that should please fans, the solidly crafted song set also offers as good an entry point as any for potential admirers.

Don't expect anything more earth-shattering than pleasantly folky indie-pop with a mild rootsy lilt. If that's your bag, though, don't lose out on this one. [No. 131, p.55]

Absolute Loser isn’t an experimental, mind-blowing fusion of genres. It doesn’t veer away from Fruit Bats signature sound. Instead, it serves to remind us that Fruit Bats have grown their sound, cultivated it, broken it, and rebuilt it, yet the core remains the same.

If the songs aren’t great at every turn here, they’re still very good, making this a solid record for long-time fans happy to see the band back, and a good set for drawing in new fans.
