This is no less than the story of a flawed man finding his own greatness--the primary factor behind the power and substance of these simple, no-frills performances, as well as the reason why any serious fan of Cash or country music history will want to walk the line it so compellingly traces.
  2. This is Cash at his rawest and most riveting, singing his soul out to platoons, prisoners and presidents alike. Hard to describe in terms that are adequate.

Altogether, a fascinating portrait of a man making sense of both himself and his times. [Dec 2011, p.94]

There are better tapes, better performances--but the strength of this collection is proving that in whatever company, be it President or criminal, Johnny Cash couldn't help but be himself.

Bootleg, Vol. 3 showcases what we already know (intellectually, at least) about Cash in a very emotional and visceral way.

Like most bootleg-style releases, it's not an ideal introduction to the artist. It is, however, a pretty compelling look at him, sometimes as a study, but often simply as a strange sort of concert.
