Bright Green Field has a hurtling energy, each song shifting restlessly, repeatedly in style and pace. It’s a shame, then, that the vocals of drummer and lyricist Ollie Judge so often pull it back to earth.

When Bright Green Field follows in the footsteps of their best track The Cleaner – supercharging the banal and mundane with vigour and purpose – it rips, mixing genres like straight-ahead indie-rock with funk and jazz, and exploring ambient and textural backdrops which make their now-home Warp apt.

This review contains spoilers, click full review link to view. One of the most creative and well thought-out albums from this year. Mixing in influences from post-punk as well as math rock, indie rock and even jazz, Bright Green Field is a brilliant way to kick off a group's studio album discography. Squid could be a major band to look out for in the coming years if we are being hit with this level of innovation right out of the gate. This album is also very ambitious, having quite a few tracks that exceed the usual track length with multi-phased and dynamic passages within each, showing that they're really pulling off this new revival of post-punk experimentation. Whether it's the track "Narrator" with it's shouted and demented vocals or the final track "Pamphlets" where layers and layers of instrumentation are introduced, this album is sure to make a lot of year-end lists and it's not hard to see why, Will definitely be listening again.
