A **** disaster. Even if this was considered a "prog-rock" project, it would STILL be disappointing. The pop crap is just embedded is this album. Coma Ecliptic is a misfire.

When BTBAM released their singles "Coma Ecliptic" and "The Coma Machine" I was in love. I thought to myself, "Nevermind the messy trash that was the Parallax II... BTBAM is back and this new album is going to be as good as Colors / The Great Misdirect." And with this logic, I pre-ordered a bundle from indiemerch that included the album, a making-of DVD, and a t-shirt, and I really wish I hadn't.

The two aforementioned singles happen to be the only songs on the album I like. I listen to the album over and over from start to finish trying to enjoy the rest of the songs but I can't. This album is just not as good as Colors or The Great Misdirect or even Alaska. And it blows my mind that it's been getting generally good reviews online, including here on metacritic. When did these people start listening to BTBAM? Have they even heard Colors?

I feel truly bummed out that I don't like Coma Ecliptic. I figured Parallax II was an anomaly in an otherwise stellar track record for my favorite band of all time, but this album is just as bad as the last in exactly the same way.

If you were a fan of Parallax II, you'll probably enjoy this album. If you liked Colors and The Great Misdirect, it might be time to try other bands.

Ultimately, Between the Buried & Me, despite employing many tropes and influences, come off sounding like no one but themselves.

While the noticeable shift away from death metal may discourage some, Coma Ecliptic succeeds in pushing Between the Buried and Me's creativity in a new direction, avoiding a simple rehash of their winning formula.

Coma Ecliptic is an exquisite masterpiece. As with most opaque works, it takes many listens to fully appreciate everything here.
