Of course, Coldplay have tried to innovate with this album, not only to remember past albums age. They have combined different types of music. However, when I listen to this, I can't how forzed it sounds in some songs, like "Daddy", which try to describe a complex story, but with boring vocals and a repetitive harmony. There are much interesting songs, like "BrokEN" or "Arabesque", that describe how much this record can surprise us. All the same, it seems that Coldplay wants to include a song for all pop fans, named "Orphans", song that takes back the hackneyed sound of "Mylo Xyloto" or "A Head Full of Dreams". With all those problema, Coldplay have made a great album. On the other hand, this is not their best récord. In my opinion, "Everyday life is better than "Mylo Xyloto" or "AHFOD", but it not beat "Ghost Stories" or the first four albums. By the way, this is my opinion, maybe you can think different. It takes a long while to get into a more Coldplay-like stride, and goes on a long experimental (not always fitting) journey to get there, but it is all the better when it finally arrives. But no sooner has it arrived, the album ends. I am not knocking the band for trying something different and there are moments of melodious bliss that sometimes exceed anything they have every produced before, but sadly these are fleeting moments, and there are also plenty of dodgy, somewhat peculiar miss steps. Some tracks just feel rushed and incomplete. I really don't understand why bands have to shoehorn weird politically charged spoken bits into their songs to get a message across. Surely the message is more powerful when it feels like a natural piece of the music. Sadly they don't. My favourite tracks are probably Champion of the World, Everyday Life, Orphans and Arabesque; the opening instrumental is an honorable mention. This is when the band finally enters their stride. If only there had been more tracks like this and less of the bizarre gospel-infused god-chanting numbers in the middle. If you have already heard the singes, I would say that is about as good as Everyday Life gets. Definitely worth a listen but not one you are going to have on repeat for too long. Certainly not my favourite in their catalogue but also not their worst. Expand

This album takes a step for the band and strays away from Coldplay’s usual sound, but close enough that it’s still in reach. Some tracks like “Arabesque” and “Orphans” manage to reach the goal of this album, but other tracks flounder such as “Trouble In Town’s” attempt at social commentary and “Church’s” insignificant choir vocals. The overall political tone of the album is best described by one word: safe. They try to take on topics like racism, environmental awareness, and mix in different cultural sounds, but the whole album seems like a very light summary of the various issues the world has faced in recent years to prove they haven’t been ignoring it and they definitely care. It doesn’t blend the sounds or issues in a very innovative approach. It’s careful enough to not ruffle any feathers, but is too vague to be praised for its efforts. Coldplay has been criticized throughout the years, listeners often citing their newest releases as weaker than the previous and in this case, I think that formula stands true. It’s not horrible, but it’s very forgettable. None of the tracks hit as hard as even the previous album’s “Adventure of a Lifetime” or “Hymn for the Weekend” featuring Beyoncé, and it’s definitely overshadowed by their classic melancholic stadium-rock ballads. And musically, at least, that journey paid off. ... Martin can be awfully simplistic in these songs — a problem in any context but especially on an album otherwise marked by some of his most nuanced words.

Everyday Life mixes the magic of “old” Coldplay with their smash hits that have kept them at the top for so long. And it works.

There is the occasional flash of pop brilliance - notably desert-rock nugget Arabesque - but for non-fans Coldplay this dose of Everyday Life will be one they can easily do without. [Jan 2019, p.87]
