  • Summary: The second album for the British singer was produced by Paul Epworth.

  1. At only nine tracks long, Everything Is New never outstays its welcome, and is the perfect riposte for anyone who had previously dismissed Penate as a scenester who'd got lucky.

The makeover has done him proud. [Aug 2009, p.108]
  3. His songs are gloriously, unabashedly pop: it's hard to detect anything studied or knowing about them or their musical references. Instead it sounds like the gleeful, inspired work of a man who's recently undergone a Damascene musical conversion, possibly at the hands of his producer, Paul Epworth.
  4. Everything is New is a gifted and resounding response to the many nay-sayers out there. It’s not the best Peñate could have done but who else could have expected this kind of departure?
  5. With a greater use of the minor key, he's added flecks of sentiment to what is, predominantly, a very solid pop record. Just don't get bogged down in genre compartmentalisation.
  6. Penate has gutted his sound and replaced it with something expressive, warmly empathetic and, best of all, blindingly spangly.
  7. Uncut

This time he's crafted a more parent-friendly brand of earnest pop that isn't quite as irritating, but is sadly no more engaging. [Aug 2009, p.101]

I have no idea who the hell this guy is, but apparently I'm supposed to hate him because the British tabloids hate him. Meh. One question, though: Who's he dating? Expand

The re-invention of his sound does not change that Penate still has one of those awful Mockney singing voices so prevellant in the incresingly boring London indie scene. Musically it is only occasionally interesting, but the minute Jack opens his mouth, I had to fight the urge to press 'skip'. Ghastly. Expand
