This is a massive record...The days, months and years will reveal more about the new record. As with releases previous, there are wrinkles that will only emerge after the record is lived with and absorbed. But if you’re wondering whether ‘Fear Inoculum’ was worth the wait, then the answer is yes. If you’re wondering whether it’ll touch your heart, soul and spirt, the answer is also so.

This album is absolutely aimless and a complete and utter mess compared to Tool's previous work. The lyrics are Maynard's most boring ever across any of his bands, and it just doesn't feel like he's into them at all. With the exception of "Tempest", the entire album is one flat boring level of energy reminiscent of a "Lateralus" b-side.

Guitar, drum, and bass riffs are all ripped off and reused unabashedly from "Lateralus" and "10,000 Days". This is Tool playing things safe, and quite frankly it's just not up to par.

Its a great album but the 10 scores are ridiculous. Its content could be from any Tool session in the last 3 albums. It isnt different enough and doesnt show enough progression (ironic right?) to warrant 10 scores. Thats not to say it is bad. Its great. But its what we have come to expect from them and Tool were never about that. Its exactly what i expected it to be. 10k days part 2.

But I'll keep on hearing on this one for years to come. I wish I could make something as good as this

Worth the wait. The laborious drawn out writting process is evident in the album, but somehow it elevates it for me. It's dense, often monotone but something about it just keeps drawing me back. I just hope now that they have this out they're not so constipated with their future releases. In the meantime this one is an instant classic for me.

Much better than expected. 13 years worth the wait. It's dreamy, powerful, atmospheric, brutal and deeper than the void itself. The level of production and mastering is as good or better than 10,000 days. It's the same Tool sound, but at a next level (if that's even possible).

I love this album, I really do and it’s near perfect except for one thing. Lengthy sections of song where it’s just open chugging on the low d, like it’s ok to use it but just it takes up maybe ten minutes total on the whole album, do you really want that? It just seems very low effort even with odd time signatures

I feel like there is always a cultural barometer that exists for every music release: where does it fit in in the current geopolitical climate? How does it capture the attention of the youth? How does it capture the attention of the youth? To say that such barometers are meaningless in considering this album feels almost too obvious, yet it is so singular that it cannot be overstated. This album exists in a space encompassing 13 long years and in doing so does not even try to comment on the present. It speaks in sweeping gestures lyrically, encompassing such universal beliefs that life is ruled by fear, or that we all struggle to remain relevant while constantly heading toward obsolescence. Musically this album does not give a flying **** about what the kids are into. There are no sing-along choruses. There are no pleas to a disenfranchised youth. There are no BASS DROPS. There is only a sonic landscape that requires effort to indulge in and comprehend.

As always, TOOL is using complicated time signatures and polyrhythms to keep the listener on their toes throughout plodding passages that would otherwise be snoozefests. Trying to figure out what Danny Carey is even doing is always one of the great pleasures of listening to a TOOL album and this one is as far from disappointment on that front as you could imagine. Adam Jones even gets to go nuts, as 7empest is a monolithic riff crucible that does not stop delivering for nearly 16 minutes. Pneuma - like Parabola before it - asks us to sit back and comprehend what a beauty life could (and should) be if we can only get out of our own way.

If there is something negative to be said about the album, it's that the vocals are too tame. Even spots where it feels like Maynard should be cutting loose (the end of Invincible and Culling Voices, for example) he just sits back. Even if you don't care if he is getting aggressive, he is also way too shy about his vocal range. Parts of Fear Inoculum (the song) and Invincible really could have been sung much more dynamically (he proved he can do it on The Pot) but he just rests on his laurels.

The fact that such an album could even exist let alone be embraced in 2019 is something to be celebrated. For people who long for the "old" TOOL, they are gone and thank god, because we needed this album more than we ever knew.

This and Aenima are neck-and-neck in terms of breadth and quality, though with time frame and expectations in account, Fear Innoculum seems to shore up about 1 more "main" song short of the impact Aenima had in the late '90s.

Even still, it manages to bring quality and execution to a modern table and does so successfully.

Aside from, “7empest”, every track feels like the band got so fascinated with time signatures and polyrhythms that they forgot to rock out.

If this was a debut album from a band nobody had ever heard of I would understand the glowing reviews. But it isn't. This is a revered band who waited 13 years to release a bunch of recycled sounds from previous albums and underwhelming vocals from Maynard. Thirsty fans deserved better than a warm drink of water in the desert. Don't believe the hype. This is their worst album by FAR.

Each song is unique, which Invincible and Descending being the most alike (and that's a bit of a stretch), and I find myself loving each track for very different reasons.

The bonus tracks/interludes are alright, interesting at best but with no true replay value in my opinion, unless I'm listening to the whole album from start to finish again. (PS, CCT is not a bonus track.)

The album itself moves forward naturally towards its gargantuan and jaw-dropping finale, 7empest, one of the tooliest Tool songs they have ever made. It feels like it encompasses every phase and aspect of their discography and sound since Opiate, all crammed up into one hell of a banger track.

I am already seeing some people expressing deep dissapointment with this album, but it is my opinion that the more I read their reviews, the more it seems that it has more to do with their own expectations of it instead of taking it for what it is. Again, just my opinion. However, I remember when 10,000 Days was released and some fans were expressing similar dissatisfaction, same with Lateralus. Each album stands on its own, and in time Fear Inoculum will too.

It feels forced, not natural, like they had to fulfill a contract or something. To be honest I didn't expect it to be like this... they always went full force and expressed themselves 100% but now it seems they have no more juice. I feel bad because I'm a big fan :(

A masterwork of intelligent technical symmetry.

Danny Carey and Adam Jones both have an individual song that focuses on their amazing talent. This album is thick with Opiate/Undertow vibes and as I listen I can somehow see the 30-year evolution of this band unfold into this album.

ABSOLUTE 10/10. If you have ever liked or loved the unique sound of Tool, this is their pièce de résistance.

I think anyone giving this a perfect 10 are lying to themselves. It's obviously a good album, but are you really going to put it in the same tier as Undertow or Ænima? It is probably as good as 10,000 days at very best, but definitely not better than Lateralus and certainly not close to the aforementioned two.

Anyone who listened to Invincible or Descending live (I saw them in June)

Anyone who listened to Invincible or Descending live (I saw them in June) will surely think the studio versions are underwhelming, especially Descending which is absolutely tame in comparison to the live version. Live it's infinitely more powerful, louder and faster paced than on the album.

The take outs from this album, for me, are the songs Fear Inoculum, Pneuma, Culling Voices and maybe 7empest, but I was disappointed with the rest. In any case 4 of the 10 tracks are actually filler (Litanie, Legion, CCT and Mocking Beat), which is a poor return for such an anticipated album. We may as well just class the album as an EP in the same vein as Opiate because that had 6 songs and so does this effectively.

The instrumentals and production is top notch, although Descending and Invincible are bitterly disappointing when compared to the live versions. If you played both songs in live and then studio, any real Tool fan would find it difficult to disagree with me. Also, Maynard sounds like he's singing for APC more than Tool.

    Track ratings:

    1. Culling Voices
    2. Fear Inoculum
    3. Pneuma
    4. 7empest
    5. Descending (would be 1st if it sounded the same as the live versions)
    6. Invincible (would be 2nd if it sounded the same as the live versions)

    (not reviewing the filler)

Overall decent, but no where near close to their prime (Undertow, Ænima).

But quality over quantity, I feel that they made 10+ minute songs because "they can" in this album's case. Every song is over 10+ minutes long to draw out overextended instrumentals with little to no buildup, no climax or nothing. Other progressive rock/metal songs in the 70s to current times told a story within their songs or it felt like an adventure. Fear inoculum felt like nothing to me, it just droned on and on when I thought something good was going to come up. 10,000 Days was a much better album than this, 10,000 Days had flair, it had something to come back to. The only song I want to come back to is 7empest, which surprisingly it's the longest song in the album but it actually felt like an adventure because the instrumental composition was really good.

I think if they cut a couple of unnecessary sections off and lowered it by 3-4 minutes, it would actually be more tolerable to listen to and it can still retain their complexity that the TOOL fanbase likes. (look at Aenima for example.) But with these 10+ min songs feels like a Tangerine Dream album but Metal. Also just remove the fillers for godsakes and ESPECIALLY "Chocolate Chip Trip." which is probably the worst song I've listened to. Sounds like Yoko Ono's terrible songs she's produced back then.

For once Adam Jones' talent is finally showcased in a tool album. He's always been kinda there outshined by Danny, Justin and Maynard in the previous albums until this one and man he does kick ass in this album.

I didn't hear any new or truly outstanding unique riffs by either Adam (guitar) or Justin (bass), and that's slightly disappointing. However Adam gets a chance to shine toward the end of Descending, which is great, because Adam is the weakest member of the band (just my opinion). But he works well with Tool, and that's what matters. Danny (drums) is clearly in the spotlight of the album. His odd and mathematical drumming style is just as prominent as ever. His work in Pneuma is phenomenal. He gets an entire track (Chocolate Chip Trip) to show off his talent. I'm not sure how I feel about the sounds chosen for that particular track. It's.... wildly different. Maynard gives a decent performance. He didn't have that many lyrics. Most of what he sang was just the same lines over and over. That's not a terrible thing, but it's a little disappointing. He uses his angelic like tone for what seems like the entire album. I didn't hear any rough sounds or screams that Maynard has given us in his previous work. 7empest is probably the closest he gets to that. In my opinion nothing in the album really stands out. Don't expect anything even close to the level of Vicarious, The Grudge, Lateralus, 10,000 Days, Ænema, Right in Two, Parabola, etc..

As someone who loves Tool, I give the album, Fear Inoculum, a 7/10. My review is based on Tool's previous work, not comparing it to other artists. I've ordered 2 digital copies and a physical copy of the album. And I'll keep listening for years to come.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It twists and turns a lot of the old. The album sounds like a melting pot of all that came before it. Which is fine, just feels more like a "family reunion" than a new addition to the family. As with all family reunions its ok for a bit but eventually it can go on too long. This is very much a jam album.

    CONS
    - it lacks some oomph or feeling. There is not a lot of feeling in most of the songs. Invincible for instance, the way the vocals are delivered and how they sound "suppressed" doesnt match the tone of the song. The live recorded version on youtube with a million views gave me goosebumps because it had feeling. Studio version...not so much.

    - the songs can be a few mins too long, again very much a jam album.
    - it feels reserved, lacks a bit of identity.

    5. Invinsible (8/10) (this could have been the best song on the album if it only had some life put into it, too weak to be "invincible")
    4. Descending (8.8/10) (very well done, adds more energy than invincible, but doesnt use its best sounds long enough and goes on for too long)
    3. Culling Voices (9/10) (beautiful and haunting, begging to be alive)
    2. 7empest (9.5/10) (la creme de la creme TOOL here, amazing)
    1. Pneuma (10/10) (HANDS DOWN THE BEST ON THE ALBUM, I would expect it to be the next single, I can see me listening to this for years to come)

They didn't necessarily change all too much (Adam's lead work has progressed as have the vocal/string section dynamics), but they have refined everything that makes them great and came out with a record that's not lazily done, nor is it compromising them as artists. Fear Inoculum is a culmination of Tool creating music as a form of art to tell complex stories in a progressive manner. They succeeded in matching the hype, which is no easy feat. It's not the best album of their career, but it certainly has what I'd consider a few of the best songs of their career. Overall 10/10 due to it surpassing everything I expected with minimal disappointment. I'd give it 9.5/10, but I can't so I'll round up :)

The bad: No MJK screams. Little aggression in his vocals. If you expected classic Tool vocals, you won't really get em here. MJK does a fantastic job vocally and does get aggressive on one track, but his singing is very tame and well kept. It's almost APC-ish, which I am cool with, it fits most songs. Some areas I was expecting a riff to get bigger and bigger then Danny to hit the cymbals then get into a groove while the riff plays at full aggression, but it didn't happen. Instead the riff switched or Adam started playing very large space-occupying chords which then led into an area that blew me away, negating my disappointment.

The good: Danny freaking Carey folks. The man is an absolute monster on this album from start to finish. Chocolate Chip Trip is a drum solo track, backed by synths (which you may hate the synths but I actually enjoyed them). 7emptest is the best song on the album, top 5 Tool song of all time. For the first time in Tools lifespan this song is less of the Danny Carey show and more of the Adam Jones show. He is just slinging heavy riff after heavy riff here. Around the 10:35 mark, Tool releases the heaviest section of music they have made in their career. It will become a classic to headbang to. Jones showcases some great lead work here too, which accumulates to several minutes on this 16 minute behemoth.

I like the songs very well, and I honestly don’t think they are boring/lame at all – as stated by some of the “keyboard warriors” rating it to 0. But, I don’t listen to Fear Inoculum, Lateralus and 10K days the same way as Ænima and other more “straightforward” rock albums. Every Tool-album has different footprint, and this one is less available and more complex compared to the others. Still, it is pretty easy to like IMHO.

Some old fans are disappointed that it doesn’t sound like their records from the 90s. Other fans are disappointed that it is too similar to earlier work. Obviously, it’s not easy to be Tool.

I understand that old fans from the Ænima-era doesn’t necessary like Lateralus and later albums. However, I don’t understand why this is an issue in 2019. It maybe was in 2001 for some people. For me Tool became a different kind of band with Lateralus.

If there is anything to pinpoint it may be that the vocals could have been more present. This problems vanish when the record is played on a proper hi-fi stereo, but I recognize that the soundstage vanish on less sophisticated earphones, earplugs, or just average stereos. Some of you also complain about that the bass is not present. It couldn’t be more far from the truth, but again, you need equipment that handle the whole bandwidth. Hence, maybe they underestimated how the albums sounds for most people (or maybe they didn’t care).

My favorite is Pneuma, but the best experience is to just play the whole album. The biggest surprise is Culling Voices, which is something completely new. It makes me wonder how the band will evolve in the future. (This doesn’t sound like a farewell album.)

I liked the album arts at first, but.. I am not sure.

(The album is not over hyped, but it is a nice way to calibrate metacritics definition for a 10 or a 100 rating :D )

That's it after 13 years?" and wonder how all the people who love it are feeling so strongly about it. But you'll probably still play it all the time.

The only people I see online who say it "sucks" sure seem to be (based on the way they act toward others) trolls. As a fan since nearly the beginning, I'll say this: it doesn't suck. It's practically delusional to consider something this finely crafted and performed as sucking. But your degree of loving it will depend DEEPLY on what YOU expect from it.

Sadly, there’s nothing on Fear Inoculum as immediately accessible or anthemic as past Tool glories like “Sober” or “The Pot,” but what is here will reward repeated spins, even if listeners initially find themselves waiting for those mammoth riffs to show up, a la “7empest,” or for Maynard to finally kick into high gear, as in the rousing refrain of “Descending.”

Musically, Tool have taken the best of Lateralus's dynamism and the heaviness of 10,000 Days to explore the middle ground with great length on Fear Inoculum. Those who stuck it out through the decade-plus wait won't mind hanging around a little longer until the album's close.
